Sigourney Weaver shits on The Hurt Locker

April 13th, 2010 // 99 Comments

Sigourney Weaver must’ve remembered she’s old and can say whatever the hell she wants now because she’s openly attacked Oscar voters for choosing The Hurt Locker over Avatar, according to Page Six:

“Jim didn’t have breasts, and I think that was the reason,” Weaver told Brazilian news site Folha Online over the weekend. “He should have taken home that Oscar.”
In a stunning rebuke hinting at frustration in the “Avatar” camp — who applauded gracefully when “The Hurt Locker” also took the Best Picture Oscar — Weaver added, “In the past, ‘Avatar’ would have won because they [Oscar voters] loved to hand out awards to big productions, like ‘Ben-Hur.’ Today it’s fashionable to give the Oscar to a small movie that nobody saw.”

Full Disclosure: I haven’t seen Avatar yet so I can’t be objective about its merits versus The Hurt Locker’s. That being said, I’ll be damned if I let someone say tits shouldn’t be a determining factor in any decision. This is AMERICA, goddammit, land of the free. My ancestors didn’t come over here just to drink themselves stupid because they were caught fucking potatoes in Ireland. That’s only half of the story. Three quarters at best.

I have tried to sit through that piece of trash, Avatar, only to fall asleep all 3 times.

I agree with Pocahontas in Space baha

And there it is! The sound of my last drop of respect for Weaver evaporating into the air. I’m still astonished that that thing was even NOMINATED. The fact that it and District 9 both made it into the running in a year that saw so many genuinely good films will forever blacken Oscar’s eye. I actually stopped watching my illegal DVD-rip of Avatar after the horrible initial exchange between Weaver and the Terminator. Dialogue that crappy isn’t worth my time anymore.

I saw both these movies and I liked them both fine. Neither deserved an oscar.

  4. Paul

@20: That was a joke, right? Forrest Gump is sloppy tripe and came out the same year as Pulp Fiction, one of the most influential films ever made, and The Shawshank Redemption, the top rated film in history according to IMDB. There is NO WAY Gump should have won anything that year.

  5. Matrim

“I never saw the hurt locker…In other words, both movies blow.”

Yeah, glad to know you think that the movie you never saw sucked. That’s a very useful and informed opinion. You asshat.

  6. el ces

Yeah. Fuck Avatar. Ridley should wipe their blue skinned asses out.

  7. Fuck the Academy

Bunch of dried up crusty old boogers they is.

  8. Fuck the Academy

Slappin themselves on the back. I win! Look at my piece of shit movie, it won!

  9. KindOfBlue

I actually don’t think The Hurt Locker deserved that Oscar. But Avatar? HAH!

  10. Shitballs

Still looks better than Morgan Webb.

  11. The only reason “Avatar” didn’t win is it was a generic color-by-numbers rehash. That’s the only reason. I didn’t see it but I suspect Hurt Locker sucked too.

I’m doubting Avatar will be remembered any better than Titanic or ID4. I’ll be surprised if there are any Avatar fan conventions.

I did enjoy “Basterds” more, and “Precious” more, and “Extract”, “Fired Up”, and “Push” more than “Avatar”. I would have enjoyed “Balls Of Fury” more if it was released this year.

@ 22 – I guess they started automatically nominating gay movies around 93 with Philadelphia, didn’t they? In the 80′s, mentioning Vietnam automatically got you Oscar nominations.

  12. Cronk

I’m having a hard time finding the last Best Picture winner that fell into the “a small movie that nobody saw” category.

  13. Dude

If breasts are what’s required, Avatar should have won…What I learned from watching Avatar: you can show as many naked breasts on screen as you like and still get a PG-13 rating as long as they belong to 10 foot tall blue aliens.

  14. Mr. Nice Guy

Shawshank Redemption was Robbed. Best Movie Ever!

  15. Shift

Haven’t seen either movie…don’t care for the fantasy that “Avatar” boasts and I have a bunch of friends in the military that say “the Hurt Locker” is bullshit.

  16. ham

Weaver’s scientist was the only watchable character on Avatar, while the Hurt Locker had none. Seriously, no one could find a better movie for the year?

  17. Jeff

maybe avatar didnt win beause it was an overrated boring piece of crap with terrible story and characters and acting you old ugly skank

  18. I do believe that there are some politics in every of awards and we can’t differentiate oscar from it. I definitely say that the Avtar is the best movie I have ever seen . But i think Hurt Locker is also a great movie but it can not win against Avtar.

  19. jugi

ya hurt locker is much better than avatar.. Even i’m a girl, avatar was a shitty
romantic movie and hurt locker was about war and death. it rocked!!!!

  20. Ninny

@40: Actually, she said that Hurt Locker won because the director’s a woman. So basically she said than when a man wins, it’s because he’s good, but when a woman wins, it’s because of politics.

You have indeed nicely internalized your sexism, ma’am.

  21. siempre erección

hahahahah if the movie hadn’t been in 3-d nobody would have given a shit about it

  22. captain america

let’s just hope this is the last time we read about her.

  23. Carlos

Give granny a break. She’s just made because the tits who won the oscar thanked the troops-a major no no in Hollywood. Also, her adult diapers were full at the time of the interview.

  24. Your mom

Avatar sucked donkey dick. That is all.

  25. John

She is right in that Kathryn Bigelow was not the best option among the nominees, but she did a MUCH better job than Cameron. The best director was Tarantino, Bigelow 2nd and Cameron in 3rd, perhaps even worse.

  26. Mikey_Dread

Did that baby alien eat Sigourney Weaver’s Brain? Avatar was a lousy remake of Pocahantas with sub par 3D graphics. Hell, Alice in Wonderland’s 3D was far better. The Hurt Locker was also mediocre as far as film-making goes. I didn’t get the hype. What I really want to know is, with all the great books and stories that exist in our world, why does Hollywood insist on re-making movies, especially, the crappy ones…Nightmare On Elm Street????? I’ve heard a rumor that they want to do a re-make of “True Grit”, WTF!? Word of advice to Hollywood…read a book! As for Weaver, take some acting lessons sweetheart for God’s sake…You sucked in avatar!

  27. if the movie hadn’t been in 3-d nobody would have given a shit about it

  28. i love her!! She is a good actress!!

  29. Blitz

I seen both Avatar & The Hurt Locker and can say NEITHER film deserved an Oscar!

  30. Thanks for the post, we’ve made an open letter to Sigourney Weaver because of her comments: http://thecirx.com/2010/04/an-open-letter-to-sigourney-weaver/

  33. Avatar was basically Pocahontas in 3D and I never saw the hurt locker because it looked like a movie I’ve seen 15 times. In other words, both movies blow.

Hollywood actors are so out of touch with reality.

I’m gonna be honest, I agree with Weaver, the Hurt Locker was horribly written and very boring. Had they had a better writer and cinemotographer, then the movie might have been good. Avatar, District 9, Inglorious Basterds, all were far better, and much more entertaining.
