Jenny McCarthy claims magical healing powers

October 17th, 2008 // 200 Comments

Jenny McCarthy has been on a crusade telling people that her son caught autism from childhood vaccinations, no matter what those know-nothings at the American Academy of Pediatrics say. Now she says that that–surprise!–he’s cured, and it’s all thanks to taking away his milk and sitting him in front of the tee-vee. Oh yeah, and prayer. Us Weekly reports:

The actress–who believes the MMR vaccine was to blame for her son’s diagnosis –says a strict no wheat-and-dairy-free diet has changed her son from a quiet little boy who used to flail his arms around to a loving six-year-old.
“Before the vaccination, he was huggy, lovey, snuggly,” she says in the newest issue of Us Weekly. “Then it was like someone came down and stole him.”
McCarthy, 36, remembers when Evan began to come out of his shell while watching a SpongeBob episode. “I heard Evan laugh…I jumped on the bed and started screaming.”
She adds, “When he finally hugged me, I prayed, ‘Please God don’t let this be the only time.’”
McCarthy has become an outspoken advocate for autism awareness, often courting controversy along the way (doctors have accused her of creating fear of necessary vaccines). She’s the bestselling author of five books, including her newest, Mother Warriors: A Nation of Parents Healing Autism Against All Odds. She’s also constantly researching on sites like like AgeofAutism.com and GenerationRescue.org
“I made a deal with God,” she explains. “I said, ‘You fix my boy, you show me the way and I’ll teach the world how I did it.’”

Wow, that’s some miraculous shit, but it’s not unheard of in medical history. I once cured myself of leprosy with a bacon double cheeseburger, a liter of Gatorade and an Aqua Teen Hunger Force marathon. At least I think it was leprosy. When I told my doctor about it later he said it was probably just a hangover, but frankly I’m not so sure about his qualifications. Once he tried to stick his finger in my ass and told me it was to make sure I didn’t have cancer. I know–total quack, right?

  1. yeah right

You mean living until 70 or 80 is caused by downing drugs, and not living a healthy lifestyle like your mother told you to?

  2. gotmilk?

so basically he had a food allergy, and she has herpes. horray! now get this attention whore out of my face.

#150 – You mean the PhD’s and scientists who approved pen-phen and Vioxx? Those PhD’s who told us that smoking is good for your health? How about those PhD’s who created the financial models that crashed the banking system, requiring trillions of dollars to bail out? In PhDs we Trust.

  4. Red Skeleton

#141 – Really you idiot? According to the CDC, thimerosal is still being used in vaccines. Even if it wasn’t causing problems as you claim, then why would they even bother to not use it anymore?

  5. Red Skeleton

“That changed in 1999, when the U.S. Public Health Service and the academy of pediatrics called on drug firms to voluntarily remove thimerosal from pediatric vaccines as a precaution.”

So I guess all doctors and scientists have agreed that injecting mercury into children is safe? Then why did the government and pediatrics associations call on vaccine makers to stop using it?

You idiots are commonly referred to as sheeple. The government or some corporation feeds you shit and tells you that it is chocolate pudding. You eat it up.

  6. Red Skeleton

But Boyd E. Haley, chairman of the department of chemistry at the University of Kentucky, believes it is “preposterous and ridiculous” for the government to warn about methyl mercury in fish but sanction injecting ethyl mercury into children.

The CDC decision, which will be officially published later this month, is “unconscionable,” Haley said, according to the Times. “If it were my grandson or my granddaughter, there’s no way in hell you’d give them a vaccine containing thimerosal.”

  8. Doo Wop

#58 and other assorted morons – nobody is blaming the vaccines. They are blaming the mercury in those vaccines. Why not just remove the mercury? The vaccine companies would make a little bit less money, so they lobby the government not to ban mercury in vaccines.

“not until six months you start to vaccinate, but you knew that.”

In the United States, the first vaccine administered is the hepatitis B vaccine, given when a newborn is just a few hours old. The BULK of the childhood vaccines are adminstered at 2, 4 and 6 months old.

“Use of thimerosal for childhood vaccines was discontinued in 2002. The autism rate since then HAS REMAINED THE SAME. It did not go down. Therefore thimerosal cannot be a cause of autism.”

No. The VOLUNTARY PHASE-OUT of thimerosal began in 1999, but several vaccines do still contain trace amounts of ethylmercury (for which there is still no safety level, 70 years later)
    http://adventuresinautism.blogspot.com/2005/08/beginning-at-beginning.html

And it wasn’t until 2007 that the FDA licenced a thimerosal-free version of the hepatitis B vaccine (yes, the same hep B vaccine admminstered to babies just hours old). Also bear in mind that most vaccines contain massive amounts of aluminum, which is another neurotoxic metal.

People need to be so careful when making statements about ‘curing’ autism. Speaking from experience both personal and professional, Autism is not something that is curable. It is a developmental disorder, and it can’t be fixed unfortunately. I have no doubt that certain strategies work for some, like the dairy free or gluten free diets, etc and those few may see such a dramatic result that they want to proclaim that it is a cure, but it does give false hope to so many parent’s and families.

    Jenny,

If you made a deal with God to help your son; you should really give him the credit when he answers your prayers.

Your Quote ” I made a deal with God, I said you fix my boy, you show me the way and I’ll teach the world how I did it”

I am so glad your son is better but YOU did not do it; God did. Please remember that.

I used to masterbate over Jenny McCarthy. All. The. Time.

    (Not literally, unfortunatley)

I’ll pretend to be autistic if she promises to heal me, too.

True that most vaccines are necessary to the survival of large populations, but one of the problems with the MMR is that the 3 vaccines are now given together to save the doctors a little money (but can still be obtained separately, though not easily). Everyone blindly trusts the FDA and the government, but we all know that money and power corrupts (just look at what’s happening with the current banking situation). Another obvious sign of this is the Flu vaccine that has ‘Thimerosal’ (an organomercury compound containing approximately 49% mercury by weight) added as a preservative so that doctors can purchase it in batches to save money, where it used to be shipped in individual doses with no Thimerosal (again, still available but not easy to get). Keep in mind that the FDA also approved Vioxx –

Vioxx Drug Recall Largest in History

“Merck has withdrawn Vioxx, its arthritis and acute pain medication, from the market as part of the largest drug recall in history, in the wake of a clinical study showing an increased risk in heart attacks and strokes after Vioxx use.”

#161: SHE isn’t saying she cured her son, the headline-writers are. She says her son has RECOVERED to the point where he no longer meets the diagnostic criteria for autism, which is entirely possible with biomedical treatments. In my experience with my child, he still has autism, but he has moved to the milder end of the spectrum, thanks to a special diet. Even if one day he no longer meets the diagnostic criteria for autism, he will still be developmentally disabled.

  27. c

    #120, reagrding this:
“The anti-vaccine people rail against thimerosal/mercury in vaccines, and point to it as a possible cause of autism. I find it funny that in this photo, Jenny has what looks like sushi, and more specifically–TUNA. what is it that’s found in most sashimi-grade tuna? what? hmm. can’t remember”

First, the type of mercury found in fish is methylmercury and the type used in vaccines is ethylmercury. There is still no known safety threshold for ethylmercury; its is merely assumed to be “safe” because it is similar to methylmercury. But according to this study, te two are metabolozed differently and while ethylmercury is excreted at a faster rate, more inorganic mercury accumlates in the brain than with methylmercury. http://www.niaid.nih.gov/factsheets/thimerosal.htm

Second, ingested methylmercury is filtered out by the digestive system quite efficiently, with about 99% being excreted within 24 hours. INJECTED mercury is absorbed into the bloodstream, where it is given direct access to the brain and other internal organs.

So here we have 2 different compounds with two different routes of entry. The only commonality is that they both happen to be forms of organic mercury.

  28. netstarman

So she gave the little snot nose a hug and gave him attention and now he is cured horse crap the little rug monster needed to get his shit together and pay attention. Vaccines did not screw him up Hollywood lifestyle did , look at Lindsey Lohan and Paris Hilton. they have had autism for many years if giving valtrexx means a cure for Paris Hilton.

  32. mom of a cool autistic kid

First off, Palen’s kid isn’t autistic, he has down’s syndrome because his mother refused to protect herself from having any children while going through menopause. Second, my son is autistic and didn’t get any vaccines until he entered a MAINSTREAM school when he entered kindergarden 3 years AFTER his diagnosis. Third, my kid is the cooled kid around…..way cooler than “normal” brats. He may talk like a 2 year old and refuse to let anyone stand next to him, but he behaves better than any typical 5 year old who whines and bitches just because mommy won’t let him have what he wants.

  33. lmao@ 15

    Many mothers have been wrong.
Simple and common example is the ones who insisted that not wearing gloves etc would give their kids not only the cold but deadly phneumonia.

    GET. A. GRIP

Also for the bible bashers (including Jenny), I would have hoped that a caring ‘god’ would come up with better puzzles for us humans to figure out and waste our time on, than making children ill, sometimes dying, all to teach us lessons or give life some kind of meaning. Sort of a cruel thing to do really isn’t it ?

  36. Autistic Mom

As a parent of an autistic child, I praise her for getting out there and spreading the word. Diet absolutely does help autism. It may not “cure” it, but it helps eliminate many of the side affects of an autistic child. We started Feingold 5 years ago. At that point, my son was silent, only showing emotion when he was scared or sad. After a month on Feingold, he was smiling and showing an interest in his surroundings. After a year, he was talking. No, he will never be “normal”, but he has come so far through diet. Just educate yourselves people. Ignorance isn’t bliss in this case, it’s just ignorant.

  37. Kari Danner

Okay superficial writer, up til now you’d had my utmost respect. (I’ve never been moved to leave a comment until now, btw.) First off, let me say that you’re the funniest writer I’ve ever read, hands down! But this post did not live up to your usual hilarity and intelligence. You’re usually so liberal…so why take what the conservative organization, the APA, says at face value?? No parent who does his/her research and can think for him/herself believes in them. Maybe if/when you have kids (god forbid–haha, jokes), you’ll understand what I mean (I hope, anyway).

  38. Chelsea

Vaccinations are truly, truly BAD! Look into it. The reason they endorse them is that the drug companies make tons of money from them. I’m so glad that Jenny is talking about this. Everyone needs to know and look into it for themselves.

  39. Shallow Val

Damn that fish looks good! Oh, and the sushi on her plate looks delish too!

  40. Shallow Val

Bottom line here……I think the message is that we need to stop eating so much shit and taking so many medications/flu shots/vaccines/antibiotics/pain killers. We need to get back to the basics, clean out our lockers/fridges/brains and make our own decisions, stop letting the TV/polits/advertisers make decisions for us. We need to start taking responsibility for our actions, stop blaming the world for the awful things that happen to us, even if we didn’t ask for it.

We need to open books not web pages (aside from the Fish, of course), or experience things for ourselves. We need to stop injecting ourselves with poisons in order to prevent natural things like AGING, we need to stop inserting liquid filled globules into our asses, chests, lips. We need to stop watching awful fake “reality” shows that promote hatred, jealousy, bitterness. We need to stop watching the world throught plate-glass windows and get otu there and talk to each other, no matter whether we agree with each other or not. We need to stop trying to convince other people to agree with us.

We need to stop trying to think we are famous by making web pages of ourselves and judging ourselves by how many “friends” we have, “friends” who are not our friends, who really don’t care about us. We need to stop valuing ourselves by how many boners we can create, women we can make hate us, men we can make look at us while they are with other women.

And I need to shut up and take my cold medicine, because I think I’m talking out of my ass. G’night Gracie.

  41. Wow…, she is so hot and sexy. BTW, my brother told me he saw her profile and photos at an age gap dating club **AgelessOnly.c o m**. She has written some blogs a few days ago. Maybe you should have a look.

  42. debbie does fish!

Its sad that there are so many negative people writing in, swearing and bagging people, who try to help others. To all the mothers out there, who care as much as jen, and would try anything…try your child with 3,000mgs of fish oil every single day! (without fail). Do not exceed this dose! Its brain food, and its working for my son, jack. he is almost 7 now, reading, writing his name, drawing, singing, working on computers, nitendo’s, understanding tv shows, using words in sentence like., ‘Because’….,until…, i said!…,not yet!…,i cant do it!…,in a minute!…,over, under there…, behind…., can i?…, i know!…,let me…., my turn!…, lets go!…,ive had enough!…,im full now…, help me please?…, im busy…etc…, We all have our own beliefs, in what works and what doesnt. I believe fish oil is the answer, because 1 year ago, jack could not do any of this AT ALL. He still attends special ed in year 2, and the only thing keeping him from being mainstreamed now, is his behaviour. I have just read Jens web page, and i know she is on the right track, because every child is an individual, and every child reacts to different treatments. To everyone out there who claims Jens child was misdiagnosed, you really need to do your homework. Anyone who has a child at the age of three, who has no eye contact, HAS AUTISM!!! The diet woked for her son, and the fish oil is working for mine. I am now looking for an additional method for the behaviour side of jack. Jen talks about Candida. I did the questionaire and being a score above 140, is classed as severe. My son scored 370. Im off to the chemist on monday, to try “threelac” as Jen suggested. If this method works, my son may be mainstreamed, and my life and my familys life, will improve. Autism is hard. Very hard. Especially on the siblings. I urge mothers to try everything, until something wakes them up. Regards, deb

  43. Debbie, many people cannot stand her. Many of whom are parents of autistic individuals. I personally believe that she is nothing short of an attention whore. As a person on the spectrum, I know that whenever I have kids, at least one of them will be autistic. As such, I have taken lots of parenting classes and practiced metacognition to improve myself. What the autistic community hates about her is that she is so ignorant and aragant that it insults more mature and selfless parents who accept their autistic children and wouldn’t trade them for the world. I know plenty of mothers of autistic children who cannot stand Jenny.

I am writing books about an autistic individual who falls in love with his boss’s daughter and has an autistic child. However, his society sees that as a crime worthy of death. As such, he and his family are endlessly harrassed and assaulted. In the end, they all die and the father reveals to the mother that autistic individuals are angels in mortal bodies.

I think that there are some really limited opinions out there on autism. My son is autistic, and what worked to help him may or may not work on other children. If you are religious, then you look to a higher power to give you direction. I live in Italy and it is really tough her, being that special ed is not the way it should be. Hospitals are socialized and therefore, you don’t always receive the same quality of care. It is an everyday battle. I must say thanks to Jenny, though because when I found out about my son my aunt sent me her book and it really helped me to recognize autism in my son. I don’t know even today after 3 years of therapy, if it was caused by the MMR vaccine. He certainly had a normal development until 18 months and then started to change from there on until reaching 2 1/2 years where he just wouldn’t talk anymore. My son is also bilingual, so that complicated things even more. I think that Jenny is to be admired and that she is beautiful. Brava Jenny!

P.S. To all of you that posted negative comments about children with autism….You’ll never know what it feels like to have an autistic child and if you’re lucky you never will, or otherwise watch out because the boomerang comes right back at you usually.

  46. asdneurotupical

It’s great the comedians have tried to bring humor to autism, but the reality of lives lived, such as seen on You Tube when you type in “severe autism” isn’t really funny. Unless. of course you want to do a parody of how much money the states could SAVE by providing adequate IN HOME support care (the care ARNOLD and other POLITICIANS want to CUT) in comparison to the cost of OUT OF HOME PLACEMENTS. Yes indeed, that is funny. For example, the cost of OUT OF HOME placement for a severely autistic self injurious young adult with seizure disorder, will be about %500,000 dollars a year, but the cost of IN HOME nursing care is about 246,000, so why , yes WHY would state agencies fight against the cost of IN HOME placement as as opposed to IN home supports, now that is FUNNY and IRONIC. Autism speaks and other organizations that send crisis response teams dont get that most the families that need help just need somebody qualifed to come into their homes and provide SUPPORT and RELIEF. We dont’ give a rip about autism being “cure” all we need is more suppor to make our autistic kids more funcitional, which requires as Hillary Clinton once said, it takes a village. Yes, it does, and providing the village support IN HOME is FAR less costly than the parents breaking down and killing themselves or having to place their kids OUT OF HOME. Now, let’s see if the brillant minds understand THAT.
