Comedian Wanda Sykes came out of the closet yesterday at a rally protesting Proposition 8 which banned gay marriage in California. The AP reports:
“You know, I don’t really talk about my sexual orientation. I didn’t feel like I had to. I was just living my life, not necessarily in the closet, but I was living my life,” Sykes told a crowd at a gay rights rally in Las Vegas on Saturday.
“Everybody that knows me personally they know I’m gay. But that’s the way people should be able to live their lives,” she said.
Sykes, who is known for her feisty and blunt style, said the passage of California’s Proposition 8 made her feel like she was “attacked.”
“Now, I gotta get in their face,” she said. “I’m proud to be a woman. I’m proud to be a black woman, and I’m proud to be gay.”
Wanda also added “Plus, you know, it was getting all kinds of crowded in there and Tom Cruise wouldn’t stop asking me if I was an alien or something. So finally I say ‘Look, I am not an alien – but that Spencer Pratt kid behind you is.’ Then made a bee-line for the door. Sheeit, he called me an alien! I mean, uh, boo! Prop 8: Oppression.”

well since the gay movement sees the need to protest a sour vote by not paying taxes, I think everyone who voted for McCain should get a pass on taxes, as well. It was always my understanding that voting results were fixed until another election but seeing how the gays feel it’s their right to punish people who didn’t give them what they want…I’m seeing things differently in the way the general election went, too. Actually, @ 47, Prop 8 could definitely have an effect on the rest of the population. In MA, where gay marriage is legal, Catholic orphanages have closed down because they couldn’t pay the legal fees to defend themselves from gay couples suing. Somehow, it’s okay for people to believe homosexuality is fine, but it’s NOT okay for churches to have their own set of beliefs. In theory, if Prop 8 hadn’t passed, churches could lose their right to wed straight couples, because they don’t support a so-called “civil right” (keep in mind that marriage has had pretty much one definition for hundreds of years–a union between a man and a woman. Keeping the traditional definition of a social more intact is NOT a violation of someone’s civil rights. I don’t believe that the government should withhold insurance or tax benefits from gay people, but that’s not the same issue). Also, as 56 pointed out, sex-ed in public schools would almost certainly change. Oh, and churches that do significant amounts of charity work could possibly lose their tax-exempt status, because they don’t support gay marriage. Just something to think about.
