McCain can’t control his own campaign. Palin is preparing the groundwork for her political future, presuming that McCain will lose and saying whatever she wants to say whether it conflicts with McCain’s positions or not. And she’s doing it right under his nose, he can’t control her at all. Truly, nobody is listening to McCain anymore – not the “Republican base”, not the people who run his campaign, and certainly not the people who are now running Palin’s campaign. This is not quite as severe as what happened to Bob Dole, but it’s the same type of thing: a respected senator with tons of experience becomes roadkill during a frenetic national presidential campaign in the era of 24 hour cable news and the internet. Both McCain and Dole were simply too old and too slow to keep up, much less to control things. I can understand voting for McCain as an anti-Obama vote, but I can’t understand a pro-McCain vote. Maybe in 2000 he could have done the job, but certainly not now.

By January 20, 2009, when the winner is inaugurated, the financial/credit/mortgage crisis will be in a completely different phase, and the economy will be in a severe recession after everybody decides to be super-cheap this Christmas. Unemployment will be skyrocketing. If the winter weather is bad and oil prices spike up again, heating costs will be brutal. Nothing the two candidates are saying now will be relevant. So feel free to pick whoever turns you on, because the details don’t matter one bit.
