Teri Hatcher was molested

March 8th, 2006 // 87 Comments

teri-hatcher-molested.jpgTeri Hatcher considered killing herself because she was molosted by her uncle when she was a young girl, and says she’s still haunted by the traumatic experience. Hatcher tells Vanity Fair magazine:

“I haven’t tried to kill myself, but I’ve certainly thought about it, and then I felt guilty about thinking about it, because what’s so terrible about my life? The most horrible thing, that has stuck with me all my life, is that he was touching me and doing things to me, and he said, ‘Doesn’t that feel good?’ I said, ‘No, it doesn’t. He said, ‘Well someday you’ll know what I’m talking about.’”

I’d have to be some sort of horrible person to make fun of Hatcher after this, which definitely isn’t the case because I read to paraplegics three days a week. I’m glad she became a semi successful actress, considering the only job opportunities for molested children seems to be: A) low rent actress/waitress B) stripping C) Both A and B.

i have friends who have been molested and i don’t think their way of telling the public would be through vanity fair, or any magazine at that rate.
she just craves attention b.c everyone is paying attention to all the other “housewives” b/c she’s become such an old hag

why is that every time an attention seeking person, makes it into the fame-celebrity club, they must tell us how they were a victim of some kind?

to explain their mistakes in life? to remove guilt from their existence? to have us feel sorry for them?

to justify some ‘lofty’ belief they have for themselves?

i feel abused by the celebs…

#3 & 4 This is not a publicity stunt. A 14 year-old girl, that her uncle molested later in life, killed herself. If Teri hadn’t said anything, he would have gotten away with all of it. Now that sorry SOB is going to rot and think about it for 14 years.

I find it odd that she is talking about how terrible it was being molested, but yet she’s dressed all sexy on the cover of the magazine.

Seems silly to me. It’s hard to take her serious when she’s in her underwear.

My understanding is that “Desperate Houswives” is a hit show, so it’s ratings are probably pretty solid. Had Hatcher wanted publicity, she could’ve spoken out about this back in 2002 when she helped put the bastard in prison for molesting another girl. She spoke out now because that other girl has committed suicide.

I actually applaud Teri for coming forth with her story. It’s terribly tragic that another victim committed suicide due to the sexual abuse.

I can’t imagine what it would actually be like in that situation and to have to keep it hidden for such a long time, even from family members.

I first caught glimpse of this story this morning on the ‘Today show’. As soon as I saw the clip, the vanity fair editor seemed eager to tell the story of how Teri was sexually abused. Granted, Teri must have known that the magazine would make it public, but to have the editor do an interview basically shouting that she was sexually abused has to be horrifying.

The media is so hypocritical. They use these stories all the time to sell magazines. It’s horrendous. And to blame the victim only makes it worse.

11: Because a person was raped/molested, you expect them to dress like librarians to prove their pain? You’re an idiot. Who cares if she’s in her underwear? Next you’ll be saying she deserved it.

What *I* hate is how everybody jumps on celebrities for sharing a dark past – no matter who they are, stupid people automatically go “OMGZZZ publicity stunt!!1ONE” instead of digging deeper. With a few exceptions, I doubt ANYBODY would lie about being sexually assaulted in any way just for publicity. Its too risky of a charge to make, and if you WERE, in fact, lying, the accused rapist could sue you and kill your career. Food for thought.

And Desperate Housewives has some of the best ratings around…so what are you taking about, 3?

doesn’t it seem that every “star” has a story like this? it’s either molestation, addiction, or whatever. and that they choose the time to reveal it to the masses so that we may be more aware, more educated, more understanding. (bless their unselfish down-to-earth, just like the common man hearts) it’s such a schtick, for fuck’s sake. personally if this ever happened to me, i’d likely not go global with the news. not that anyone outside the 5 people i know would care.

Interesting decision to tell her story to Vanity Fair, too. Not a hard news magazine, not a child care magazine, not even Highlights for Children. Nope, no mining for PR there, and hey(!) there’s a suicide to piggy-back onto as well, even better.

Going public with something like that CAN be commendable if done with the intent of helping others avoid a similar situation, or encouraging victims to report abuse, etc. However, using it as a career boost is a bit less commendable.

I agree with numbers 11 and 32′s comments. Yes, it is sad that it happened to her and another girl killed herself. Still, if you are discussing sexual molestation, you shouldn’t be trying to give men hardons. She is a aging media whore trying to stretch out her renewed 15 minutes of fame. She should have told her story to a nonsexual magazine like “Time”. Vanity Fair used to be respected, but now it’s like Maxim and Stuff. I do enjoy looking at hot women, but I don’t want to have it ruined by reading an article about child abuse.

Teri testified at her uncle’s trial, and that alone takes guts. Most people who are raped/molested never come forward with their story for fear of being called a liar. A 14 year old victim of her uncle committed suicide and she felt compelled to come forward so that some other girl wouldn’t have to go through it too.

I applaud her courage and all you cynics who say it’s because of ratings or a co-star’s Oscar nod aren’t seeing……or are incapable of seeing the bigger picture.

And those who say that because she’s dressed scantily on the cover somehow undermines what she’s saying or makes her look like a liar………..are full of shit and need your heads examined. Next thing you’ll tell us is that women who wear tight clothes and drink at a bar deserved to get raped later on. What a bunch of fucking neanderthals.

1 out of 4 girls are molested…. Look at 4 women you know and 1 of them have suffered the trauma… many of them eloquently.. some not so.

Can we EVER know one’s true motivation of anything? (I.E. publicity or public awareness and education?) It appears (and I wasn’t there) that she has “proof in the pudding”

However, brow beating someone for something of this physical and emotional latitute is JUST SO WRONG ON EVERY LEVEL.

If it happened, she may be asserting the statmeent for public awareness…. and/or ratings review. However if it educates one child, helps them break “the chain of silence” good for her.

If it didn’t happen… only she and her accuser know… and that’s how so many of them escape these things….she’s a sick puppy.

However, one must give a little latitute. If it did happen… what if it happened to your child? And they went public? How would your responses be then?

#45 no one said you couldn’t look sexy after the fact but when you are coming out to tell your story for the first time it isn’t the place to be taking these wanna be sexy pictures. Yes she was molested and that was horrible but have some decency when you go about it. Why didn’t she go to a reputable newssource like time or newsweek and sell (opps tell) her story. Because she knew she would be a blurb and vanity fair would give her the cover.

Of course people are going to by suspicious at the timing of this revelation since this would have been at the peak time of felicity huffman’s career if she would have won the oscar. I mean it is a little convinient isn’t it. Even Paris Hilton put some clothes on for a month when her sex tape came out and dressed in women suits, I would thik someone who was molested and coming out with the story wouldn’t be on the cover of vanity fair looking like she does.
