Steven Tyler has hepatitis C

Steven Tyler says he was diagnosed with hepatitis C three years ago and has been secretly battling it, telling Access Hollywood’s Nancy O’Dell that after a year of treatments, “It is nonexistent in my bloodstream … where it’s like a complete cure.”

So now Steven Tyler has joined Pamela Anderson on the list of people I never ever want to share a needle with. Not because they both have hepatitis, but because I hear ugly might be contagious and I’m not taking any chances.

  1. LL

Steven Tyler – great voice, but he’s unattractive and always has been. Joe Perry – now, he’s pretty hot, even now. Steven Tyler looks like a cricket. Not hot.

As for the virus being gone from his “bloodstream,” not likely. The virus may be undetectable by a test, but that doesn’t mean all the virus is gone. It’s like AIDS in that once you got it, you’ve got it for life. If there’s even one virus left, it’s not gone, and it can multiply back up to levels that make you really sick and eventually destroy your liver.

So dream on, Steven. Heh heh…

  2. jrzmommy

he looks like he’s got hep.

  3. Vylith

    it is amazing(!!!)

how we forget what the ~*stars* have done (but)

we are still drowning in their diseases.
    ^_~

  4. Caniac

Hep C is not likely to be contracted through sex. A person is considered cured if the virus is undetectable in their blood for 6 months. Some of you are jerks.

  5. HollyJ

The fact is that there is NO “cure” for Hep C, just like there’s no “cure” for Herpes or the HIV virus. You can do things to mask symptoms, but you have it until the day you die. It’s a fact.

Just because you don’t have an active genital blister, doesn’t mean you don’t have herpes anymore; you still DO. Just because you may not have full-blown AIDS, doesn’t mean you aren’t carrying the HIV virus; you still ARE.

No amt of dreaming or periodic flashes of normal health will remove HIV, herpes, or Hep. THEY STILL HAVE IT and can pass it on to others.

    It’s never “curable”… PERIOD.

  6. angel24

Hep c can be cured. Hep c does not go by looks or age, Anyone can get it not just by needles. Some of you may want to get checked, just in case. Hep c will soon be larger than Aids ever was. So go ahead and laugh make fun, all the way to your doctor.
Spread the word to everyone you know, get checked, then get cured.

  7. marc of teh place

His face is falling off. Paperclips were made for a reason.

  8. RhinebeckCowboy

Is angel24 a retard ? Hep C is not curable, and having undetectable counts in your blood means little if your liver is fucked up. Tyler was a druggie and a alchy so its a safe bet that his liver is cirrhotic.

But aprt from that – I think the dude is sharing a little too much detail about his life ? What’s next ? Liv confessing she has genital warts ? Actually, its quite likely she has Hep C as well since I’ll assume Steve gave it to, or got it from, her mom.

  9. Caniac

Tell me, if the virus is no longer found in one’s body how that is NOT a cure?

Some of you need to educate yourselves.

  10. Caniac

“Actually, its quite likely she has Hep C as well since I’ll assume Steve gave it to, or got it from, her mom.”

That is simply untrue. We don’t know if Liv’s mom has the disease and, even if she did, the virus is only a 5 percent chance that it would be passed to a baby during birth.

  11. Caniac

“true hey, my mum is a nurse she got a needle stick injury from a Hep C positive patient and worried for weeks until the number of different tests she had came back negative… she couldn’t care less about HIV it was the Hep C she was worried about.”

Doesn’t it make sense that your mum was more worried about hep c than AIDS bc the person was actually DIAGNOSED with hep c and not hiv? Give me a break.

  12. jrzmommy

Caniac……see that window over there? Yeah….that one……go jump out of it. Jesus Christ you’re annoying.

  13. RichPort

#60-61 – Please go and taste test used needles at the local biker tattoo shop. Let’s see if it cures your moroninity (thaaaat’s right… I just made up a word especially for you).

  14. Nat'l Hepatitis C Coalition

There is no cure for hepatitis C and no testing available that is sensitive enough to measure absolute zero hepatitis C virus in the body even if it WAS possible to cure it. What has been reported concerning Mr. Tyler’s condition is known as an “SVR”, otherwise known as “sustained viral response” to the treatment. This is basically disease remission and definitely a good thing!

Unfortunately though, remission from hep C doesn’t always last forever. This may be because the virus is believed to hide elsewhere in the body from organs other than the liver, to the lymphatic system – all which are unmeasurable by current testing methods. This is why the virus so often “returns” at a later time (because it was never “gone” in the first place). Claiming something that cannot be measured is foolish (although the same “cure” thing is also being done with cancer) and only serves to hurt the rest of us who’d love to see a true cure on the market for ourselves!

I do believe that Mr. Tyler also knows this to be true because if you’ll notice in his comments he didn’t say he WAS cured, he merely stated that it was nonexistant in his bloodstream, which he believes is LIKE a complete cure – most likely based on the fact that he probably feels better now. Let’s just hope for his sake that the virus doesn’t once again rear its ugly head as seems to happen in the majority of the cases where patient’s viral loads go undetectable as his has.

EVERYONE should be tested for hepatitis C because there are far more innocent ways of being infected (via blood to blood contact) than the public is currently being told. A simple blood test just might save your life!

  15. angel24

being a retard is not all that bad is it.
take heed, SVR is a cure. YES , EVERYONE SHOULD BE TESTED, FOR HEP C . TELL EVERYONE.Think about it the next time you get your nails done, have surgery, share toothbrushes, razors, have a blood trans. Come in contact with an infected person’s blood, they might not know they have it.
These are just a few… good luck … TELL EVERYONE GET A BLOOD TEST.

I have read thru all 65 comments and I can honestly say that 98% of these comments disgust me! All of you are making horrendous statements about a man that you know NOTHING about. My daughter and I have had the pleasure to meet and speak with Steven the first time at a Pizza Parlor. And he was and IS a kind, gentle, caring and loving man. When we saw him again, he acknowledged us like a life long friend. Who are any of you to belittle him? He has done more for music and charities for those in need than any one of you simple minded idiots! In his early years his promiscuous ways were no more or less than any other rocker. Steven has been a devoted father to all of his children. And to suggest something as vial as him getting or passing HepC to his daughter is ludicrous!Have any of you simple minded jerks ever heard why he was compelled to write the song “Janie’s Got A Gun”? Of course you haven’t; he wrote it because he was appauled at the growing numbers of females being sexually abused by a parent or other close relative. You bash him because he opened up and admitted he has battled with this horrendous disease– you people sicken me. It took a hell of a lot of courage to reveal his secret; a secret none of you have any right to be privy to. Steven, Brittney and I stand by you 110%. It is real easy for you cowards to sit behind your computers and tear him apart both physically and spiritually– I’m willing to bet that way more than half of you are ugly as sin, with your lover being that keyboard you’re sitting at. Steven, the day I met you I said you were “hot” and baby I meant it. He cares about everyone and he adores his family. When he talks to anyone and asks questions he genuinely cares to hear your answers. So Steven if you’re reading this, you asked what I do, I am a writer. There is not a person alive who has met Steven that has anything negative to say about him or Joe for that matter. #52, how does one look like they have Hepatitis C – do they have it imprinted on their forehead– You insensitive feeble minded idiot! If there is anyone of you (1 thru 65) that are from mine and Steven’s era (granted I’m 7 yrs younger) who can say their beyond reproach and lived a life of purity, than I can only assume you lived under a rock or you’re a geek! Steven, Brittney and I salute your courage to unveil a secret that these demented people who obviously do not possess an iota of class or feelings for their fellow man even deserved to be privy to. Those of us who have met you or know you stand behind you 110% and I know that we pray for you daily. We hope to see you again soon after your tour at the best pizza joint in the world! Rock on Steven, Joe and the rest of the guys, without you rock n roll would not have ever survived. Your two “Aerofans” by the lake.

  17. I have an addendum to my comment #66. It has been almost 24 hours since my original entry and my blood is still boiling over you simple minded biggots with your hollier than thou attitudes. Steven; you asked me what I do when you met Brittney and I, I am a writer, not for a magazine or newspaper – I write books. And I would love to write your story. We’ve read many books written about you, the latest being “Walk this Way, the autobiography of Aerosmith.” It was okay, but I’d like to write your story, just yours, with your help and permission of course! And then I’d like to cram the words down the throats of these crude SOB’s that have launched an attack on you. The Steven we met has more compassion in his little finger than any of you have in your entire body.If it wasn’t for him, Joe and Aerosmith, my teenage daughter wouldn’t be the guitarist she is today! What Steven does in his life is NONE of anyone’s business. But he took a big chance, humbled himself and let the world in on his most private secret. And you people turned on him when you should all have supported him and prayed for him. Well Steven, you can be sure of this, Brittney and I are in your corner and we continue to pray for you!!! I myself am facing a surgery next month that’ll put me down for 2-3 months, and being that it’s just me and my daughter I know what it’s like to be scared and hundreds of miles from the place you love (you probably still on tour and us forced to be 1000 miles away from our favorite place on the lake all for the right surgeons). Janet & Brittney

Steven Tyler doesn’t have a clue what he’s talking about related to hepatitis C because he’s too stupid to know better and he’s nothing but an idiot. If he truly thinks he’s cured, his doctor should be willing to take a sample of his blood and inject into his own bloodstream to prove the belief. Ain’t gonna happen though because quack’s like Tylers’ KNOW there’s no cure for hep C and they’re just using monkey’s like Tyler so they can sell more of the chemotherapy.

Tyler’s gonna sure be embarrassed when the virus rears its ugly head in a few years and he has to explain why he cant tour anymore. The stupid S.O.B. is hurting millions of people who WISH there was a true cure for hepatitis C. As of today though, there ISN’T one. I even saw in one article where this jack*ss mentions that he’s a “miracle” because he thinks his virus is gone. Talkin about thinkin he’s someone special – HA!! Funny how Naomi Dudd called herself a miracle too when she first decided to propagate her lie of being cured from hep C back in 1998. Maybe she’s been doin the hokey pokey with this moronic donkey.

SCREW STEVEN TYLER and all the damage he’s done already. May he get EXACTLY what he deserves!!!

I was just telling my husbands Doctor the other day, we need a celebrity or two to come out and admit they have Hep C; then maybe more people with money and power will help find a cure that we can afford. As it stands now its $3,000 per mo if you do not have Insurance for the Interferon. My co pay is $500.00 per mo. with my Sam?s Club Inc.! Fate chance of me coming up with that kind of cash to save my husbands life, on a cashiers hourly pay. So thank you Steve for your honesty. Where is Liz Taylor when you need her, maybe she can do for Hep C what she did for AIDS or maybe Steve can fill her shoes? Best of luck to you and God bless? Janello

    JanetR,
You are without a doubt one of the biggest, foolish, desperate kiss*ss I’ve ever read a post from. This is a message board you idiot, not an employment facility. I’m surprised you didn’t post your entire regimen, or maybe you did!

Anyway, judging by your posts you sure don’t know your hind end from a shotgun so perhaps you should push that little “off” button on your computer and get a friggin life. You are certainly no writer but I can honestly say that I believe YOU ARE A COMPLETE MORON. And gee, you think you know the history behind “Janie’s got a gun”. WOW comeon folks, lets all do the happy dance for Janet. She’s a genuwine groupie!!! (boy doesn’t that make YOU special to be one of a jillion throwaways that this band has USED over the years). Don’t worry tho, hep C is only transmitted through blood to blood contact anyway, so unless one of you is bleeding you can still be his donkey for the night!! Ain’t you the lucky one!! (funny how we grew up callin those kind of chicks sluts – I guess if the shoe fits. . . hehe)

What’s next? Ya gonna tell us that you touched Elvis’ hand when he was in his casket and how he sat up to cop a quick feel too huh? One question: did ya like it? LOL

Janet, you are without a doubt a freakin moron and who knows what else. Do you really think that any of us gives a flyin rats a** that you met this jerk? The S.O.B. deserves nothin less than a boot in the teeth for his lies.

Hep C is a chronic illness – a viral illness that affects the hepatic system – namely the liver. It is contracted through exchange of infected body fluids – includign blood and semen. It is a disease that often lies dormant for a significant period of time and presents later in the disease progression. Symptoms may include: jaundice, nausea & vomiting, fatique, decreased appetite, dark (tea colored)urine, itching some severe, weight loss or weight gain in the abdominal region from fluid called “ascities” sometime lower extremity edema. There is no cure although meds can reduce the viral load to near nothing but one is still and always will be infected and can transmit it to others. Be careful with whom you sleep with or share needles with (don’t ever) or if you get an accidental needle stick – it could be deadly.
p.s. it destroys the liver much the same way alocohol does.
I am an NP at a major transplant center and we see a lot of liver disease. Happy to answer other questions.

hepC is not curable… bottom line. Its not even debatable. He had it, so he has it and will to the day he dies.. and his death will probably be from it… Its unfortunate that anybody has a disease like that, however, we all have to be accountable for the decisions we make in life, and he is no exception. His money, fortune, and fame cant buy his way out of this one. He brought this upon himself so i cant say i feel sorry for him…

You know when I first started reading the comments I was honestly bothered by them. I saw so much hate being flung at Steven Tyler upon his admission of having Hep C. It doesn’t really matter that he is famous or whatever. I have never met him and most likely never will. It did however bother me that no note was taken of what the disease is. The majority of the replies sounded uninformed. No one actually knew or knows what it is to live with this disease. I do. So start throwing all the insults you want at me too. Sadly, I got it from a much needed blood transfusion. I did not sleep around as most here seem to believe is the means of getting this virus. The comments here sounded so much like what was happening to the child who had AIDS and not allowed to go to school so noone would get it. Misdirected words at people who have this disease doesn’t help anyone. Hep C is gradually becoming widespread. It is silent and you might have it without knowing it. Remember all those who tried to donate blood after the 9/11 attack? So many found out then that they had it.

In my opinion you should play it safe become informed on Hep C and have yourself tested before you point a finger at anyone. Life has a way of twising things around for many of us, like they say .. what goes around, comes around.

  24. ibmercurial

I contracted hep c via intravenous drug use during the 80′s. My fault, I live with the consequences of my actions and the interferon and riba are burning me up, most of the time I feel “dope sick” and it sucks. I am astonished to read so much mis-information re. hep c, and given the lack of empathy displayed in many of these posts I can only conclude that many of the posters are ill-informed cretins, possibly of the one toothed, inbred variety, found in the foothills of Tennessee. Maybe some of you should get together and go hang out in front of the local nursing home on a nice day. You might get lucky and have a shot at knocking some crippled elderly out of their wheel-chairs. Gutless cretins, if accountability for ones’ actions is what you crave, maybe you might want to point the finger in the mirror as you gag and wheeze from the toxicity that you fill the air with every time you start your noxious, carbon monoxide emitting vehicles. My heart goes out to you Mr.Tyler, thanks for the poetry and raunchy lyrics..

Steven, just continue to ROCK ON! Brother!

  26. who has what? never mind…i don’t care

It is amazing how many people are so judgemental. And bad mouthing some one that they do not even know personally? I bet many times you rocked out to his great music. I too have the dreaded hep C from a life lived with bad choices until I finally wised up. Clean and sober 20 yrs now. I am glad that someone with his celebrity spoke up about this disease, we need more research and funding for the Hep C disease. and please people quit being so mean without reason, makes you sound like you are a bitter person living a miserable life.

i have read every comment on this page and i must say i am in tears. how in the hell can some of you live with yourselves? attacking this poor man who has never done nothing to any of you? are some of you so self rightous not to realize that it is not your place to judge? only god has that right and it seems to me that he has seen fit to help this man and give more time on this earth to do what he loves doing. i love aerosmith, their music is absolutley wonderful and has lots of meaning..if my life had a soundtrack you can bet your ass their would be at least a dozen aero songs in there. i think steven is very brave to share this with everyone he probably expected reactions and comments like i’ve seen here but he did it anyway and i say bravo steven. bravo for standing up and putting a face on this terriable diesease. i am praying for you asking god to be with you. stay strong and know that there are those of us who support and love u. god bless u

  29. cntrygirl81

i just wanted to issue this warning to all those nasty people leaving those hurtful comments………..dieseases like hep c, hiv, aids etc.. may be linked to wild life styles drinking drugs unprotected sex etc.. b ut who amoung you dont have afew skeletons in your closet? ythe day may come when you will b e the one who will need compassion you should count yourselves lucky and feel compassion for those suffering. it may soon be your turn. i dont believe thse dieseases are gods way of punishing people for their sins..god knows we are not perfect god knows we will sin why would he punish us for something he know we will eventually do anyway? if this was the case everyone of us would be afflicted with something and fighting the same battle. so take heed he may just choose to punish you next for your sin of trying to play his role in judging those around you.
