Gotta stick up for Sinead. I was into her before she became well-known, and it was sad to see her sucked into pop culture status, then thrown away. All along, she’s been writing great music–sophisticated and original. And as for sexual orientation, people here assumed she was a lesbian because of the shaved head, I guess? She’s always been pretty obvious about her heterosexuality in her personal life and in her lyrics.

Although I haven’t been very open about that, and throughout my life I’ve gone out with blokes because I haven’t necessarily been terribly comfortable about being a lesbian. But I actually am a lesbian.”
By the end of June 2000 Sinead modified her position by saying the truth “is more complicated. I’d given another interview saying I was more attracted to men, and a woman who I had gone out with a while ago took my statement as an insult to her. So I over-compensated and said I’m a full-on lesbian, which I’m actually not. I’m bisexual. But if I’m in a relationship with a woman and I walk down the street with her then it is going to be all over the papers anyway, so I may as well out myself so I can live an open life. I don’t have any problem with people knowing about my sexuality.”
And just a year later, in 2001, Sinead married boyfriend Nick Sommerlad.

sinead has an awesome voice and she’s a really strong person. she ain’t no wussy girl that’s for sure and she doesn’t buy into the whole gender roles crap like a lot of singers do, i.e. mariah carey, kelly clarkson, most hip-hop female singers, etc. she’s the real deal and if you don’t like that then fuck-off (she would say that, i swear).

Tracie (55 & 56), thanks for that information. I’d never heard of Sinead coming out as a lesbian, and I was aware of her succession of male partners/lovers/husbands. I thought people’s conclusion that she’s a lesbian must be based on some stereotype about lesbiand and short hair or something.

And I really mean no offense to any other posters, but … is it really necessary to put down women who _are_ into the gender role? What’s cool about Sinead is that she is herself and makes no apologies about it. And that’s maybe a cool thing about someone like Kelly Clarkson, too. IMO.

It’s really too bad her career is overshadowed by her rambling on about herself. She’s probably one of the most talented singer/songwriters around. I know she’s really into men (although she says she’s into women now too ) because she’s been heart broken by them enough times. The trouble is she keeps contradicting herself. Whatever her problem is, she’d be better off not saying anything at all and dealing with it privately. Given her level of talent, she should be appreciated for that alone.

Who’s the dude on the right?

#51: She released a few albums after the Pope-picture–ripping incident. She had a semi-hit in 2000 with the song “No Man’s Woman” (but I guess now she’s an old man’s woman). And last year she released a reggae album.

Anyway, I always thought she was talented and beautiful even if she’s crazy as a loon. Her debut album, The Lion and the Cobra, is one of the best albums of all time.

I think it’s nobodies business what her sexual preference is and people who sit around talking about it or investing that much time and emotion into what her sexuality is really needs to find something productive to do with their time. We all have issues so who are we to judge hers. I think the shaved head is beautiful, and I think her political/religious rebellion says something about the type of person she is which, to me, is someone who deserves respect just for taking a stand in what she believes. I don’t think she’s “looking for attention”, I think she believes strongly enough about what she stands for that there is no other way to express it other than by doing things she has done on TV or whatever. I say, “You go, girl and to hell with everyone else and the judgements they pass!!!”.

If any of you knew what it was like to be in the public eye you’d have nothing to say. Need I remind you that this is someone’s mother/daughter/sister/friend that you are speaking about? Who gave you the right to judge somebody you’ve never spoken to? Say all you might, but she will be successful no matter who is riding on the bandwagon against her. She’ll be laughing her “fat” ass all the way to the bank while you continue to hate your blue collar job and eat mcdonalds for breakfast. Obviously no one here with an opinion has anything to be proud about, you all should be ashamed of yourselves. Get a life and try a little individuality.
