Yes, Europeans did learn a great deal from other cultures, but those that you reference are Arabic in origin and, while those peoples are indeed dark-skinned, they are certainly not black, as in of or belonging to a Sub-Saharan culture or ethnic group. Also, are you referring to the kola nut commonly found on the African continent? It is well known that this nut was originally used to make caffeinated beverages, but I have never heard of it being used to make gunpowder. Also, how could gunpowder technology be exchanged between Egypt and China, when there were no historical trade routes between the two during the Egyptian dynastic period (ancient Egypt)?

Also, please do not be so narrow-minded as to state that the only achievements of the European peoples are “storming into countries, killing innocent people, stealing resources, ideas etc.” That is patently ridiculous. Every society on earth has been marred by millennia of war. I’m sure you must realize that Africans are no exception, as tribes on the continent have a very long history of inter-tribal warfare, where the victorious tribe would enslave the members of the other tribe and even sell them to the Portuguese for transport on the Middle Passage. Do not think it was only the Whites enslaving the blacks; the latter set the precedent for the practice themselves.

Further, Europeans did not obtain the entirety of their knowledge by “copying ideas from Africa.” Yes, Europeans borrowed a great deal of knowledge from the Arab world including Arabic peoples inhabiting the North African Maghreb (but again, not Sub-Saharan), but Arabs in turn borrowed most of their advanced knowledge from the late Roman (Byzantine) and Persian Empires as they were little more than nomadic tribes until their unification under Islam in the 7th Century A.D.

Also, I did not reference steel or hydraulic technologies because disputing these arguments is tiresome and I have a life outside of the internet, one which involves writing my Master’s thesis on Arabic history. A few minutes spent on a superfluous website such as this does make for good entertainment, however.

Anyway, I find your American pre-conceptions of racism thoroughly insulting. I am German (hence my username “Berlin”) and would hardly consider myself racist in a country that has been striving for decades to eliminate prejudice. Just because you are black and someone disagrees with your arguments, especially when they have a premise upon which to make said arguments, does not mean they are racist. Any German with a good education finds racist sentiments appalling, considering our dark history in this regard. But to assume I am racist against so-called “African-Americans” is truly ridiculous, since I am pretty sure these do not exist in Germany. We do not have a concept of “African-Germans,” merely Germans. If first- or second-generation immigrants in Germany want to identify themselves with their own ethnic groups, that is fine, but we find the American concept of identifying people by race (such as “African-American”), especially when these people have been living in the country for centuries, to be a form of racism and self-segregation in itself. I received my undergraduate education in the US and to this day cannot understand how blacks do not find it racist when they are called African-Americans as opposed to simply “Americans.”

Finally, even if Africans did, as you say, innovate ground-breaking technologies and generate all the ancient world’s knowledge, I think anyone with a good understanding of history will agree that those who discover new technology and ideas are irrelevant; the only people history remembers are those who truly mastered and applied that knowledge.

I doubt in the coming centuries that there will be many of us atavistic relics remaining. Mr. Barton’s work is not included in university or other scholarly studies due to its outrageous, usually unfounded claims and frequent spelling and grammatical errors. The latter especially excludes most works from being taken seriously, unfortunately.
