OK, Fish, let me clear it up for you. The Catholic Church is trying to claim that gay men are attracted to children and so homosexuality is what’s responsible for children being molested by their priesthood. Once they get rid of gay priests, everything will be fine. It’s a witch hunt, pure and simple, because they can’t admit that their clergy is a haven for pedophiles. Roseanne is trying to refute that, but as usual she’s doing a crap job of it – no wonder you can’t tell what she’s talking about.

And by doing so, they’re just re-victimizing all those who suffered sexual abuse at the hands of their clergy.

Rosanne is the funniest lady I can think of, just my opinion and I don’t think many people would agree. Regardless, if you knew her history and her upbringing you would have better understanding why she would make comments like this. Most likely this is a first hand opinion, which is sad.

I don’t really care about Rosanne and whether or not she’s “relevant” or “sane”, but here’s a random tidbit: quite a number of Catholic parishes allow girl altar servers. Please do a little research before blasting someone else’s lack of research. It’s not medieval times anymore and even some Catholic churches are letting the women-folk participate. So Rosanne’s point–while probably based on nothing other than assumption and general rage at pedophiles–is somewhat feasible. Oh, and I was a girl altar server growing up and no, nothing happened.

I went to catholic school for nine years. My friend in 7th grade, a girl, was raped by one of the teachers but fortunately he wasn’t a priest so the dioceses didn’t shuffle him around or get him off. Also NOTE the school shelved previous complaints of misconduct with that particular teacher for touching the thighs of young girls.

This is not about the rate of molestation among priests vs. others. This is about the insanity of the church encouraging pedophilia by hiding it, and for taking no responsibility and saying “the devil did it” pretty much and calling all of these rapes “gossip” while comparing the negative comments to the mass murder of Jews in WWII. Way too much to cover in this limited forum but I was also raised Catholic and attended Catholic schools from elementary all the way through Boston College. At no point did I ever see anything inappropriate from a priest, and we had rookies fresh from the Seminary all the way up to the odd Cardinal prancing around campus.

This is a tragic time for the Catholic Church but I also believe that what we’re seeing here is relatively transitory. I recall stories from uncles and great uncles who told stories about their small town experiences. Back then, and by that I mean the early 50′s, sex education wasn’t taught by the nuns but rather by Seminarians from the “big city”. When these guys showed up, they encouraged the small town boys to express themselves and some of them, as with any group, were confused with their sexuality and sexual orientation.

At the time, these young boys were actively encouraged to consider the priesthood as a means to “resist” the evil temptations (remember, this is the 50′s). Many of these young men, perhaps already unstable and candidates to become pedophiles (nothing to do with homosexuality, thanks for asking), joined the priesthood. They were already a mess before they got there and I’m convinced beyond a doubt that many of these kids became the pedophiles we’re dealing with today.

So we, and by “we” I mean the Catholic Church, went through a horrible period where we probably took some of the weakest and confused members of our society and turned them into priests.

The “recruiting process” changed in the 60′s and 70′s as people became more enlightened, but yes, given what we did, many of the abuses started in the 60′s and continued into the 90′s, at which point many of those yanked from their personal hell in the 50′s started dying out / retiring.

Oops.. went on longer than I meant and again, this a truly complicated process that features a generation of priests who should have never become priests.

Anyway, my two cents..

I agree with #35, growing up, I remembered my grandmother telling me that in her days, many men who “don’t fit in” would take up priesthood as a form of escaping the rest of the world.

While it’s embarrassing to see how the Church is choosing to deal with this, saying that parents taking children to church should lose custody made her lose any point she was trying to make.

Brendan Smythe was molesting kids in 1945, people who gew up Catholic in the 1950′s like your relatives were molested during that time, and criminal cases have been brought that occured during the 60′s, 70′s, 80′s, 90′s etc. That’s not “transitory” and your banking on just one (or maybe just two?) (or uh, maybe even three?) flawed generation(s) dying out and neatly cleansing the Church of the problem is, forgive me, extremely naive. I can see why the wishful thinking, but you do your Church no service by it.

The Church doesn’t impose its own canon law, and then does all it can to prevent any civil and criminal law from touching its priests. As long as it continues to do that, and make wretched excuses to boot, the situation won’t be “transitory”. Just because nothing happened to you, and you personally never saw any molestation occuring really means nothing, except that perhaps John Geoghan didn’t visit Boston College much, or perhaps you were never a natural target for pedophiles. “Sexual confusion”, sex ed from questionable sources and seminarian recruiting practices that took adolescents doesn’t automatically create pedophiles – the psychosexuality is far too complex to go into here, but the tendencies are often planted earlier in life. What does ATTRACT pedophiles is a framework where no one questions your sexuality or marital status (presumed celibate) and also allows you unsupervised access to children. Pedophiles also gravitate to careers as camp counselors, athletic coaches, etc. that allow them access to kids, but they don’t get immunity from the “why aren’t you married” question that priests have.

It is a tragic time for the Church, but in many ways they’re the ones who created it by repeatedly – and knowingly – allowing wolves in priest’s clothing to prey on their trusting flocks.

Were is the outrage from all the lefty losers about the thousands of kids sexually abused under the government care, the US Justice department report came out this year that 1 out of 9 children were sexually abused by guards in juvenile detention centres, that’s over 3000 children just in 2008. Over 400 teachers were dismissed from 2002 to 2008 from sexual molestation of children just in the state of Connecticut alone.

Instead of rehashing cases that are decades old, why don’t they expend their energies protecting children under the care of government entities, or because they want to replace religious authorities with the ‘ state’ they excuse all the child abuse by the government.

The Church has done more to combat these sick people that go into professions that deal with children to abuse them then has any other institution, all these cases are at least 2 decades old, I’m not even Catholic but I can’t stand the hypocrisy of the left and their use of fake outage to push their ultimate agenda, like how these story from the corrupt NYT’s came from trial lawyers, that go around suing the Catholic Church, the main person in their piece is a lawyer that has made over 63 million suing the church, which NTY never mentioned. and that it came out the same week Obama was trying to pass Obamacare and the only possible reason that it wouldn’t pass was the abortion issue and the Catholic Church .
