Ronnie James Dio dies at 67 (1942 – 2010)

May 16th, 2010 // 61 Comments

Metal legend Ronnie James Dio died early Sunday morning after a six-month battle with stomach cancer. His wife Wendy posted the following message to fans on Ronnie’s official website:

Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss. Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever.
- Wendy Dio

Jesus. First Frank Frazetta now Dio. If Glenn Danzig dies this week, I’ll be convinced somebody’s murdering off my childhood and doing an incredible job making it look like natural causes. Now someone tell me how to get Lion-O from Thundercats a secret service detail. The White House threatened to rendition me if I keep calling. (Like a black president doesn’t know how to duck a bullet by himself. C’mon.)

Rest in Peace, Ronnie \m/

Wait a minute – Ronnie James Dio was alive? I thought he died in 2007.

  5. Kebin

Dio was the master of metal and the guy we all looked to for mystical guidance. Forever may the torch be lit, in the name of all that is rock and roll, for Mr RJD. See ya on the south end of the cross, sensei.

  6. jizzlobber

First celebrity death I actually care about

  7. I caught his act when it came to Iron Maiden Motorhead. Motorhead started things off, and then they came after scene. It was, faute de mieux, AWESOME! He will be sorely missed.

one of the finest singer/songwriters in the business, and still was kicking more ass on stage at 67 than most singers will do in a lifetime. he will be sorely missed by the entire metal community.

Wow, Peter Steele just last month and now Ronnie James Dio. All the great ones are departing this earth, while clowns like Soulja Boy Tell Em and Miley Cyrus still walk among us. It’s a very sad day.

  15. Alana

Ronnie James Dio was the greatest lover I ever had. He’ll be missed. *sigh* Let it be known, not only did he invent Metal Horns \m/, but also The Shocker \\n/. He was one of the true greats in this world. RIP Dio, rest in mother fucking peace.

Well, now he can start a band in metal heaven. We get some John Bonham, and Dimebag Darryl. We just need a bass player… hmm.. Oh, John Entwistle.

    Band created.

    RIP, god of metal.

  28. Chuck Billy

I have a new respect for SF. THIS is news.

The impact Dio has in Metal is huge. This to Metal heads is like Elvis dying.

I can’t beleive how quickly time flew by. its been about 30 of listening Dio for me.

Thanks for what you gave us Metal heads Ronnie.

Rest up Ronnie, Jesus is on bass and needs a frontman. Ronnie was small in stature but created a giant onstage. My sympathy to his family, friends and all of us who love metal and lost a great singer.

  31. toolboy

Dio (much like Dimebag) was an amazing talent with a humble attitude. I think both of them understood what it was like to be a fan and never forgot that people drove long distances or saved a paycheck just to see them play or sing and were grateful as a result. Thanks for being true to the music Ronnie, I am going to miss you-

Truly one of the greats. Ive seen him perform and it was always a privelege. He had a voice that could bring tears to your eyes!

I think even people who werent fans of his music have to admit that the man could SING!

Well, now he can start a band in metal heaven. We get some John Bonham, and Dimebag Darryl. We just need a bass player… hmm.. Oh, John Entwistle.

    Band created.

    RIP, god of metal.

No disrespect to Entwistle, but it’s got to be fast, hard and heavy. The line-up goes like this: Ronnie James Dio out front, Randy Rhoads and Dimebag Darryl on guitars, Cliff Burton on bass, John Bonham on drums. Let The Heavans Rock and The Heavy Metal Thunder Roll! RIP, RJD!

    #29. Chuck Billy?…THE Chuck Billy?

Ronnie, thank you for the music and the inspiration. Not only has your music deeply touched millions, but your gracious attitude towards your fans is something that is so rare and so amazing. I wish you were still here.

Here’s to your eternal glory, may your voice cover the world!

  40. scooby

    RIP Dio. You’ll be missed.

  41. She-Ra

@ Dread not – I forgot about Cliff. Way better choice. I was honestly just trying to think of dead bass players and Entwistle was all I came up with.

Good line up. I’d die to see them. ;)

  42. Mama Pinkus

something’s calling me back, it’s a light in the black, and I’m ready to go……..I’m going home……..goodnight sweet little Ronnie; you were among the best

  43. Stinete

If in hell you carry on, now the fiddler has a voice that god will envy.
    Long live rock’n'roll. RIP.

  44. This is really interesting.

  45. Good video hope everybody body like this…

  46. Most of us involved at TGBF do this as a side project and are actually interested in holding on to their full time jobs and professions, so flitting around the globe covering events really isn’t in the cards in most cases.

  47. Brooke

Oh man, my internet was gone for a few days and when I finally do get on, sad sad news in the metal world ;_; Dio was awesome. I hope he lives in a castle even bigger in the afterlife than the one he lived in on earth. Rock on, Dio.
