Robert Altman’s production company announced today he has died at the age of 81. Altman was nominated for seven Academy Awards over his career, including five for directing although he never won any of them. He was given a Lifetime Achievement Oscar this year.

I’ll weigh in – I liked a lot of his stuff. He was involved with, among others:
“M*A*S*H” (there was a movie before there was a TV show, kids) “Nashville”, “The Player”, “Gosford Park”, “The Gingerbread Man”, “Cookie’s Fortune”, “Dr. T & the Women”, (featuring a gerbil-stuffer, a naked Farrach Fawcett and a topless Helen Hunt), “A Prairie Home Companion” (cast included Lindsay Lohan, all you Fishies), “McCabe and Mrs. Miller”, “The Long Goodbye”, “Thieves Like Us”, “Popeye” (starring cokehead Robin Williams), “Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean” (starring Cher when she was in her prime).
81 years and a Hollywood heavy hitter. I’d say he kicked some major ass.

“typical” Altman film; I’m sure he’ll get something for
A Prairie Home Companion-it’s such a great romp.
For what it’s worth, he thought Lindsay had true
talent and I’m guessing he might know what that

of the many cinematic triumphs in the ouevre that was Robert Altman’s career, my most memorable would have to be Julianne Moore walking around with her box out for like 10 straight minutes in Short Cuts.

or what about the opening to “The Player”? something insane like 10min without a cut. one continous shot for 10min going through a Hollywood studio lot. During the sequence, one character can be overheard giving props to Orson Welle’s opening shot for “Touch of Evil”, which was also a 10min uncut single shot.
but for my money M*A*S*H was still his best and those fuckers at “The Academy” should be ashamed of themselves for only giving him a lifetime acheivement. He deserved best director for at least 4 of his films.

Over-rated to the point of infinity. Even M*A*S*H wasn’t that good- have you seen it in the last 20 years? Its a muddled rambling mess that is only saved by the fact that Gould and Southerland were cool back then. Nashville would be a bad TeeVee movie. I can’t even sit through much else -Gosford Park? Please.
Actors liked him because he let them improvise. His best movies were 20+ years ago and they haven’t aged well. RIP, but don’t give me this genius crap.
