Rihanna: THE INTERVIEW

November 5th, 2009 // 61 Comments

In an interview with Diane Sawyer on today’s Good Morning America, Rihanna talks about her humiliation for not only being beaten by Chris Brown but going back to him after the incident:

“That’s embarrassing that that’s the type of person that I fell in love with,” Rihanna told “Good Morning America’s” Diane Sawyer in her first television interview discussing the assault. “So far in love. So unconditional that I went back. It’s humiliating to say this happened. To accept that? It’s a traumatizing experience.”
Her decision to go back to Brown, she said, was a mistake.
“I stayed. I even went back after he beat me, which was wrong,” she said. “But again … I’m a human being and people put me on a very unrealistic pedestal. And all these expectations, I’m not perfect.”
The 21-year-old star acknowledged that Brown held her in a headlock twice that night and bit her on the ear and fingers.

Rihanna also realized young girls look up to her and she was setting a horrible precedent by staying with Chris Brown who apparently fights like he was told he couldn’t have a juice box while watching Dora:

“It’s completely normal to go back. It’s not right. I learned the hard way, but again, this is what I want people to know,” she said. “When I realized that my selfish decision for love could result in some young girl getting killed, I could not be easy with that part. I couldn’t be held responsible for going back.
“Even if Chris never hit me again, who is to say that their boyfriend won’t? Who’s to say that they won’t kill these girls?” she said. “These are young girls and I just didn’t realize how much of an impact I had on these girls’ lives until that happened.”

While it’s a little too convenient Rihanna’s coming forward just weeks before the release of her new album, I can also see how it’s the perfect time to be a role model for young girls in abusive relationships. I dunno, maybe it would ease my conscious if she talked more about the importance of identifying warning signs. Like that time Chris Brown punched a kitten because his custom Xbox didn’t have enough diamonds – then angrily waxed his vagina. That kind of stuff.

There are women around the world that go through a lot more than just being slapped around by your celebrity boyfriend, with much more severe repercussions than leaked pictures to the tabloids and being “embarrassed”. And I’m sure the level of care she received was incredible in comparison to what these women receive. You speak about being put on an unrealistic pedestal, how about voluntarily taking yourself off of it then instead of exploiting it?

I’m not going to claim I’m the most compassionate person, but at the same time, it’s pathetic that this sort of thing has a light shone on it like Rhianna is the first women to be abused by her idiot boyfriend, using the role model excuse.

Then again, things are always put in much worse of a light and excuses pulled out the ass, when you’re trying to promote your new album. I’m sure this will skyrocket sales, at the same time, I’m sure it will help Chris Browns sales too :P Well played Chris and Rhianna, well played.

Facebook is an asshole, so I’m gonna have to re-write my awesome comment:

good thing she’a singer, cause compared to her Megan Fox is a fucking-oscard-winning actress. do you know why she just came out with this?(other than to help her sell records) it’s cause SHE IS THE WORST PUBLIC SPEAKER EVER. For fuck’s sake, I’m not even a native english speaker, and I can put sentences together better than she does… I know that she’s like soo um embarassed and like soo umm scared and like soo ummm ashamed…
And before people start whining i still think chris brown should become someone’s bitch in a prison, but still.
this did not convience me at all…
and does she intentionally makes herself look uglier?that’s her plan,so ppl won’t hit her anymore?or wtf is up with this hairstyle?

I would have liked to hear her acknowledge that there were two previous incidents of domestic disturbance between she & Chris, both of which where Rihanna slapping or punching Chris. Also, she has admitted before that the night in question started with her attacking him. What he did was awful and unexcusable. It is never okay to attack your partner, but that goes for women, too. If she does not get control of her own temper and voilent disposition, she will quite quickly find herself back in the same situation. I don’t think that she should be a role model simply because she did not hit as hard as he did.

I’m appalled at how many comments so far actually say she deserved to be beaten. It doesn’t matter WHAT she did…she, and every other woman on earth, does NOT deserve to be beaten. The fact that domestic violence is so prevalent does not make it ok and the fact that she chose to talk at all (even if it is at a great strategic time for sales) is a great way to raise awareness of domestic violence. You saw her face when she was beaten…this wasn’t just some slap in the face or even a punch. This beating was brutal and her celebrity status forced her into the limelight at a very difficult and personal time.

In some ways she’s very lucky that she is in the spotlight because she had the entire world telling her, “WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING WITH THIS MAN?”

My own mother was not so lucky. She stayed with an abusive man for love and the abuse only worsened to the point of unspeakable emotional, physical, and sexual abuses.

Let me reiterate to the ignorant posters before me…NO ONE (woman, child, man etc.) deserves any sort of abusive relationship and attacking her for telling her story is pathetic on your part. She may be “Rihanna” but she’s also a human being and treating her like some kind of product that deserves this treatment simply because of her celebrity status is wrong. Plain and simple.

    Dear Superficial Writer:

It’s good to be honest about people who resort to physical violence against other people. It’s good to expose their (inherent) hypocrisy.

It’s good to be unforgiving when those people don’t really demonstrate any understanding of why it’s wrong.

But, really, where’s the vagina joke coming from?

If anything, a vagina (and the estrogen that usually comes along with one) would make him LESS likely, statistically speaking, to be involved in this sort of crime.

I know you’re in the habit of talking smack about female genitalia, on account of you’re clearly and proudly a misogynist. I still visit the site, because at least you’re a funny one, enough that you make light of your own fixation/issues with women now and again.

But I hope that some day you’ll feel comfortable talking smack about male genitalia or bodies now and again, just to *pretend* to play fair. And so your jokes can at least be loosely tied to your actual point.

I can’t believe some of the comments above. She speaks brokenly because she’s trying to keep herself from crying. She’s talking about something incredibly personal, that obviously still tears her up, but she wants to hold it together because she’s become (without intending to do so) a spokesperson for raising awareness about domestic violence.

#16 I agree with you except for the part about 99% of women deserve it. No one deserves it. What if that was your mom, douchebag? What if your dad kicked your mom’s ass on a regular basis just for “silly shit” as you put it. I agree with you that they should leave the guys that are beating them and the ones that dont are just asking to be beaten again. Women do need to step up and say im not going to take anymore of that shit. But to say that women deserve it sometimes is just fucked up and you’re a douchebag for even saying that.
