Columbo Died (1927 – 2011)

June 24th, 2011 // 61 Comments

Hollywood legend Peter Falk, best known as TV’s Columbo, and to my generation, the grandpa narrating The Princess Bride to Fred Savage, died last night at the age of 83, according to ABC News:

“Falk died peacefully at his Beverly Hills home in the evening of June 23, 2011,” according to the statement. Falk is survived by his wife, Shera, of 34 years and two daughters from a previous marriage.

He made you think he was stupid, but really he was smart.

Rest in Peace.

    • The Old Guy

That was my favorite part!! The way he just wore them down to the point of frustration.

I never got tired of that.

      RIP, Lieutenant.

    Just one more thing…

  9. It had to be said

The man was an angel. Then he traded in his armor. Now, presumably, he is an angel again.

    Too obscure?

My mom LOVED Columbo. Good show. Good acting. Good mysteries.

Although personally, I preferred William Conrad in Cannon.

    RIP Columbo.

  18. Sad that after a life of classic performance, his last appearance was at the Lint Roller Party…easily the WORST political party ever.

his skin in that photo looks better than lilo’s does now

Are you… Is he looking at me?

I see Columbo now and again late at night. On the one hand, they are dated, but on the other hand, still clever stories.

I hate to be depressing but anyone else feel like we are losing the good ones and gaining idiots?

He was a legend! Columbo is still one of the greatest shows ever created. His character was terrific.

Nobody ever mentions how incredibly fucking awesome he (and Jack Lemmon) was in “The Great Race.”

R.I.P. Mr. Falk. And so Hollywood takes one step closer to being completely without class. Just two steps left.

  26. tlmck

First saw him in Robin and the 7 Hoods. Been a fan ever since. One of the truly great ones. I also never missed an episode of Columbo. Today’s detective shows are mere pretenders to the throne.

I just watched The In-Laws the other night. Had to figure out how to connect the old VHS to the HDTV. What a classic. Serpentine Sheldon! Serpentine! They don’t make them like that anymore.

…for whatever reason, i always think of him as the cab driver in “it’s a mad, mad, mad, mad world” …i mean, besides grandpa in princess bride …he was a really funny dude on talk shows and the old dean martin roasts.

He is a sincere legend to me, though I never really plunged into Columbo. Rest in peace, decent man…

He was brilliant in so many roles. Murder by Death is hilarious and fit him perfectly. Thank goodness we can still see most of the old Columbo shows on Netflix.

    RIP Peter Falk.

This is so sad. I remember watching Colombo when I was a kid.
In a day when there are so many ‘one hit wonders’ on TV, it really makes me appreciate an actor like Peter who was so dedicated and talented.
    RIP Peter Falk.

interesting how few the number of comments are on here considering he was such a quality actor who so many people knew and cherished his work, compared to the outpouring when a jackass crashed his car when drunk
