After suffering a stroke in October, there was little news about the condition of comedian Patrice O’Neal, and now we know the reason. His friends at The Opie & Anthony Radio Show announced Patrice died last night:
Yes it’s true that our pal Patrice O’Neal has passed away. The funniest and best thinker i’ve ever known PERIOD. #devastated
I don’t want to sit here and pretend like I’ve been a huge fan for years, but anytime I saw Patrice perform, whether a stand-up special or the Comedy Central Roasts, I always laughed. The guy was definitely one of the more talented comics out there.

I won’t say he was “one of the greatest” or anything outlandish, but he was one of the funniest and one of the most self-aware comedians of our generation. I can’t think of another in this day and age who walked through life more underrated. Rest peacefully, beloved man. I can’t wait for you to harass this white lady on the Other Side.
I listened to O&A for years, and man, when him and Norton got on, it was solid fucking gold.
I’ll never forget his story of moving to NYC and eating junk food for 2 weeks straight. He was so constipated he put on a rubber glove and stuck his hand up his ass and pulled out a rock hard turd. It’s fucking sick as hell, but I was crying laughing.
Also loved his story on O&A about pulling over in a rest stop in the winter and having the dude come up to his SUV knocking on the window saying, “It’s cold outside” trying to get Patrice to let him in to his ride. The joke being of course that Patrice did not know the guy was gay and wanting to have sex with him. Doesn’t sound funny with me typing it out but believe me, on the show it was comedy gold. Good stuff. RIP my friend.
Wow it took him 5 seconds to mention race in his act. With black comedians it’s all about color. Not that original. Not that funny.

I always liked him as a talking head during VH1′s “I Love The …” series and even his short lived cartoon series. Kept meaning to see him at Coraline’s. That shipped sailed. Hope he and George Carlin are having a big ol Comedy Roast. Missing you, big man.
Loved that guy on “Tough Crowd With Collin Quinn.” Best show to ever inhabit the 11:30 spot on Comedy Central. That’s right, screw you Colbert! Stick to “Strangers With Candy,” buddy.

…i was friends with Patrice for about a year before i’d even heard him do stand-up, i only knew his work on ‘tough crowd’ and chapelle …then i watched his hbo ‘half hour comedy hour’, and it blew me away …i called him afterward and gushed like a fan …that brutha had a mind for comedy like few others i have seen/heard, definitely right up there with (his former nemesis) bill burr…whenever we talked, i could barely get a word in edgewise because his mind was always working, and he was just short of brilliant, intellectually speaking …he did an episode of ‘green room with paul provenza’, and absolutely commanded the room, and that’s with sandra bernhard, rosanne barr, and bob saget on the panel …sorry to ramble, but, i’m just a little sad and felt like sharing …and now back to the jokes (“RIP sea monster” is my favorite so far)

Try to find his stuff from the “Just for Laughs” Nasty Shows. I’m sure it’s taken from his older stuff, but for someone who wasn’t familiar with his work (ie: me), it was like a greatest hits montage.
