Michael Vick has agreed to plead guilty to a felony charge for his role in managing an illegal dogfighting ring, and will formally enter his guilty plea Monday. The Smoking Gun reports:
As part of a plea deal, the Atlanta Falcons quarterback admitted that his Bad Newz Kennels operation wagered money–which he provided–in pit bull fights. However, “Vick did not gamble by placing side bets on any of the fights,” according to a “summary of the facts” that was filed today in court. That document, a copy of which you’ll find below, also notes that Vick “was aware” that three of his cohorts killed several dogs that performed poorly in test fighting sessions in mid-2002. The summary reports that “Vick did not kill any dogs at this time.” Earlier this year, Vick, and two cronies “agreed to the killing of approximately 6-8 dogs” that fared poorly in testing sessions at his Smithfield, Virginia property. Some of the animals were drowned or hanged, and Vick “stipulated” that the animals died via the “collected efforts” of himself, and codefendants Quanis Phillips and Purnell Peace. Both Phillips and Peace previously pleaded guilty to federal charges and stated that Vick participated in the execution of eight dogs last April. Vick faces a maximum of five years in prison for his conspiracy conviction.
To be fair, sometimes dogs can be really scary and the only thing to do is to kill them cruelly. One time I was walking down the street and a dog barked at me and I got really scared and I wished somebody as brave as Michael Vick was around to drown him. He’s a hero to stand up to those mean dogs!

Racial stereotypes and the vitriolic hatred that is espoused here are the reasons there will continue to be conflict both here in the U.S. and globally. Every war ever fought has been about the belief that one group is superior to another. There are people in every walk of life, regardless of color, race, religion, etc. who don’t hold the same values that the majority do. When those people violate the rules that the majority have established to define acceptable public behavior, then those people get penalized. I don’t care if you have a PhD from Harvard, or you have an $85M contract from Nike and the NFL, or you are a crack whore from Cleveland.
It doesn’t matter if they were dogs, what breed of dogs they were, or if the breed was dumber than a pile of rocks. They were live creatures who were killed cruelly for no other reason than they were not up to the vicious standards that Michael Vick wanted. Vick wanted his dogs to be trained killers in a performance venue he created for his own entertainment. When they didn’t measure up, it didn’t bother him to slay them in ways he felt somehow was justified because of their poor performance. He was **punishing** the dogs for failing to be as malicious and cruel and aggressive as Vick wanted them to be. There can be no other explanation than that. Otherwise, Vick could find a quick and painless way to accomplish killing them. I’m not justifying the killing – I’m simply saying that if that is your goal, you don’t use torturous means to accomplish it.
Michael Vick invested time and money into illegal activities for his own and others’ entertainment. He will now go to prison for it, and he will lose millions of dollars in potential earnings. If he should return to the NFL, and I seriously doubt a team will take him because he will have spent X number of months while his skill set atrophies (but somehow, the NFL used to ignore that with Jeff George, so anything is possible). Michael Vick will write a book – which people will buy – and do interviews – which people will watch. But Michael Vick very likely will never say the words that many of us would like to hear: “What I did was wrong. I chose to do them, I did them, and they were wrong to do.” He will very likely say things like: “People don’t understand me. I was a pawn. Others made me do this. I was a victim.”

I’m not sure if this has been said already, and I’m sorry if I am repeating, but it’s like the saying, “guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” Same is true if anyone tries to argue that a certain type of dog is doomed to be vicious or a killer. No, it’s not the dog, it’s the people behind the dog. I have been around big dogs my whole life (German Sheppards, rotties, Dobermans etc.), all raised by good people, and therefore, they are good dogs. To say that pitbulls are naturally vicious is ridiculous. In fact, I have been attack by more small cats than by big dogs a million times over.
