There’s been a mini-epidemic of violent black criminality in sports, especially football and basketball. There’s white violence too, but it’s the same chronic wife-beater type of thing that’s been going on forever. The new thing is young black superstars from poor neighborhoods taking their thug pals with them when they hit it big in pro sports. And then very foolishly hanging around with them when away from the team and getting into exactly the same situations they would have if they hadn’t made it to the big time. At least in the NFL, they’re finally sick of this type of thing making the league look bad. Ray Lewis was an accessory to murder but then paid off key witnesses and later won the Super Bowl, saying it was extra special because of “all I’ve been through” (it’s never “all I’ve done”). That’s not going to happen again, because the sponsors and advertisers are getting worried about being affiliated with violent criminals. If the NBA doesn’t do the same thing, they’ll keep circling toward the drain (for the last several years, the NBA AllStar game has been associated with major crime outbreaks, because of all the “gangsta” rap wannabes who cling to basketball stars).

It’d be nice to say it’s not a race thing, but it is. It’d be nice to say Vick is an unusual case, but he’s not. A line is being drawn, and it’s a good one, and has nothing to do with segregation.

I am going to speak seriously and honestly for a moment at the risk of being heckled for being thoughtful on a site called “The Superficial.”

A couple of people have already alluded to the link between professional athletes and a rise in violent crime. Some have also linked this increased relationship to race. Quite frankly, I think the basis is more socioeconomic than it is racial.

You see these young kids with athletic ability become star athletes and as early as high school, they escape responsibility for their actions. They are able to graduate high school despite the fact that they skip classes or perhaps are actually failing their subjects. They get in to college with mediocre (at best) grades and although they aren’t technically allowed to receive gifts from sports agents, you know there are loopholes.

What happens is, you basically have these large children suddenly swimming in money. They have no experience managing money, no knowledge of how to behave and they just totally lack the class or the maturity to handle themselves appropriately.

This is not limited to the black community, the latino community or anyone one race more than another. It happens to people with limited class and limited money who suddenly have so much money and power and were never coached on how to handle themselves.

Michael Vick should be ashamed of what he has done. It is inexcusable Regardless of what his punishment is, according to the courts, more of a statement would be made by how people respond to him. If the Falcons do keep him on, people should speak out – with their wallets. Stop going to games, stop buying tickets. Sadly, most people are more concerned with entertainment and amusement than they are to stand by their convictions or what they think is truly right and wrong.
