Michael Richards apologizes

November 21st, 2006 // 163 Comments

Michael Richards went on the Late Show with David Letterman yesterday to apologize, which was probably the worst venue possible he could have chosen. Seinfeld was a guest on the show and asked Michael Richards to appear, but most of the audience hadn’t even seen the incident yet and many thought it was some sort of comedy sketch (you can hear people laughing and Seinfeld has to tell them to “stop laughing, it’s not funny”). It’s a very honest apology and I can sympathize with the guy, he just probably should’ve picked a more legitimate news source. By doing it on Letterman he ends up sounding like that crazy guy who’s always shouting at the hot dog stand.

  1. I can’t for the life of me understand how you can all be having this conversation and allow the antisemitic remarks of this NipsyHustle and Wallygator without comment. Is it some sort of ironic joke that I just don’t get or do people really somehow think it’s okay to say that stuff? It’s violent- in any form, words against groups of people and individuals is a violence that hurts all of us. Michael Richards showed us an ugly side of the reality of the world, and we would all like to feel superior and point the finger at him to divert it from ourselves. That anti semetic stuff is not okay…please tell me you were kidding- and now you owe an apology….

@135. Sorry. I just haven’t been that inspired lately. I guess it’s all the FUCKING RETARDED POLITICAL COMMENTARY littering this place that’s bringing me down.

Thanks for reminding me about Suri Cruise. Somewhere out in the Alaskan wilderness stands an igloo with two dead Inuit midgets murdered for their baby. Get outraged about THAT, you pedantic motherfuckers!

@143. Cram that junior high debate shit right back up your ass where it came from. Debates about racism are fucking boring.

I’ve had a change of heart. Debating the possible racism of a former Seinfeld cast member is the most interesting fucking thing I can possibly think of, and that’s not just because I’ve been stabbing myself in the head with a fork while reading this discussion.

Thus, I wanted to let all of you know some interesting facts about Seinfeld that might be useful in our dialogue:

    * The Soup Nazi was an actual Nazi, and his favorite soup flavor was “Cream of Jew.”

    * “Schmoopie” means “nigger” in Yiddish.

    * The puffy shirt is part of the official KKK uniform.

Dude! I’m SO tired of white people saying that CRACKER has the same sting as N!**ER…
    Cracker?? Cracker??…WTF?

The ONLY way that dumb ass word will mean ANYTHING is if I crack a WHIP to your back and call you CRACKER!! THEN it will mean something.

    Until then…. STFU!

    He either:
(a)Is one of those racists who never knew or never admitted to themselves that they were a racist, or
(b)Is only sorry because it got caught on tape

  8. superficially

AMEN #158 – totally agree with you there…

….now people let’s get back to making fun of people who actually still have careers or are at least interesting and pleasant to look at…instead of that has-been racist

I think that those hecklers have no right to be so dispespectful to someone who is onstage trying to do his jokes. And I totaly think those hecklers shouldn’t get any kind of compensation for this because it would only encourage them and more people to think it’s ok to yell things out to people who are on stage. They have some nerve. They are trying to use their race to get money.same old crap.I would have said the same thing..you fuckin moolies..just think you can yell at people and it’s ok when you say crackers or honky. He apologized ..now what they fuck else do you need?why aren’t the hecklers paying Michael Richards for their rudeness. If anyone’s feelings were hurt or anyone recieved pain..it was Michael Richards..not the hecklers.Michael Richards should stand up for himself in this and not let some dumbasses who were at the show one night cause him to loose his carrer over somethin so stupid. They caused him to get mad and say things that he really didn’t mean.It was very rude..and they should not be able to get anything. There should be an anti-heckler law at comedy clubs.U want respect..then show the guy onstage some respect.. Sincerely Rose

Yes, What the heckler did was disrespectful? But as a performer, myself, you must never loose you cool or your head! You must be smart enough to get yourself out of a situation without being offensive. Not only did he offend African- Americans, but all of his audience no matter what race they were.
You don’t right a wrong with a wrong, it’s not right!

I really don’t think your opinion on how African-American’s should or should not act was warranted. First of all, if you had any critical thinking capabilities you would realize that African American’s aren’t the ones bringing the drugs into this country. So you should find fault in those who are high powered and have the means and funds to bring drugs into this country. So you solely saying African American’s should get off their lazy butts and stop selling crack, is outrageous. Secondly it is their right to feel as though their were offended if they like. And I don’t recall ever, hearing an African American comedian saying hon&*@. You should be more mindful and sensitive to racial issues before making hindsight comments like you did. And for you to have black friends, obviously they aren’t close friends because these comments were ridiculous.

  12. yeah, sure….that’s real believable
