Michael Richards apologizes

November 21st, 2006 // 163 Comments

Michael Richards went on the Late Show with David Letterman yesterday to apologize, which was probably the worst venue possible he could have chosen. Seinfeld was a guest on the show and asked Michael Richards to appear, but most of the audience hadn’t even seen the incident yet and many thought it was some sort of comedy sketch (you can hear people laughing and Seinfeld has to tell them to “stop laughing, it’s not funny”). It’s a very honest apology and I can sympathize with the guy, he just probably should’ve picked a more legitimate news source. By doing it on Letterman he ends up sounding like that crazy guy who’s always shouting at the hot dog stand.

Can you say, “Uncomfortable?” Stupid that Letterman acted ike he didn’t know Richards was going to appear, and very poor choice of venue! Who wants to see two comedians NOT be funny on Letterman? And kudos to Richards for being such a brilliant actor! Who knew the real guy was such a screwed up, hate-filled, drippy dude? Turns out Kramer was the polar opposite of Richards.

Seriously Black people, the word is Black, not black. You don’t call the French people french. You, of course, call them pussies. But I digress…

He should have called those two jerk-offs Amos and Andy, or Driving Miss Daisy… that would have been funny, slightly racist, but acceptable.

i think it would have been more appropriate to call them Kid n’ Play but i don’t know that white people would have seen the comic genius in that one. you have to have seen a House Party film to understand it. Those two were all about hijinx and heckling.

I really have to disagree, I don’t think his apology was honest or genuine at all. The guy was referencing racial tensions because of hurricane Katrina??? In comparison to his ridiculous outburst. What the hell does Katrina have to do with his disgusting behavior??? Not to mention if I am not mistaken Mel Gibson was chastised for months, and still is over his comment about Jewish people, and yet still ugly—he didn’t even use a slur or reference a horrible period in history for Jews for that matter. Also, he at least had the excuse of being drunk…this dude wasn’t under the influence at all. Yeah, I believe he’s sorry alright, sorry that he was exposed on camera and now has to acknowledge his disgusting behavior. Listen to him again, the man doesn’t know what the hell to say because he isn’t being genuine at all and just doing what he was told so as to not affect sales.

I find it so ridiculous that he apologized. Why would he say sorry? He expressed himself last weekend. That’s how he feels about Black people. Period. He’s racist and disgusting. Like Mel Gibson, apologizing only makes him look insincere and apologetic because he was caught on video doing it. I guarantee if he hadn’t been taped or it was a more isolated incident, he’d be living his normal life – because I’m positive this isn’t the first time he’s said what he said.

The best thing he could have done in this situation is disappear off the face of the earth. He doesn’t deserve to even be on a t.v. screen, let alone the Letterman show.

I am so sick and tired of black people freaking out over stuff like this. It has been a well known fact that in the comedy business white people are told to stay away from busting on blacks however, they are allowed to go all night making fun of us, some practically making an entire carrier out of it. Get over yourselves and quit trying to blame white people & every other race for that matter for all your problems. I think Michael Richards was correct, although his delivery was out of line. Back in the 50s & 60s the behavior of most blacks was very different than it is now. I don’t dislike black people. I have several close black friends. I just hate the whole thug mentality. I also can’t stand one way people who blame everyone else for their own state of being. Get off your ass, stop slinging crack & get a life! Learn how to treat others with respect & put yourself in their shoes for once, and for god sakes learn to laugh at yourselves. As the old saying goes the joke is always funny until it’s on you.

And i quote: “I think Michael Richards was correct.” ummm WHAT? it’s one think to make fun of quirks or black and/or white society but its a completely different thing to yell N****r at the top of your lungs repeatedly to an audience who paid good money to hear your obviously unfunny stand-up. Celebs should respect the people who keep them rich and should not be paid to spout bigotry to people who dont want to hear it.

Personally I don’t have a problem with racist jokes, as long as you can tell they’re jokes…if everybody’s laughing, then it’s a joke…Richard’s admitted that his tirade came from a place of rage – that takes away from the jokey-ness.

The real issue here is that celebrity life is completely sheltered from any kind of reality.

Look at how celebrity’s act when ANYBODY dares to upset them. Mel Gibson not only freaks out and screams racists/sexist remarks but tried to ESCAPE the cops after being hand-cuffed!!! Michael Richards freaks out after being heckled, something even a BEGGINING stand up should know how to handle.

This is the result of being protected by their managers, publicsts, and the celeb magazines that previously wouldn’t print stories like this because they need people to love the famous so they will buy their crap magazines.

Thank you internet! I guarentee you that if there was no internet you would never have heard this story.

I can’t wait for the NEXT celeb to go postal, any bets?

i don’t know who is going to lose it next. i’m betting on madonna. she’s got that black baby’s daddy on her heels. i’m sure she’s got all sorts of names for him. and of course she’ll deny being racist because she bought a black baby.

#33′s clearly talking out of his ass. He’s probably one of those idiots who stands by the water cooler complaining about how slavery’s over.

Back in the 50′s and 60′s Blacks were still dealing with segretation (which is basically another form of slavery) and civil unjustice. You can’t expect over 300 years of history to be fixed over night. Where slavery supposedly ended Jim Crow began and continued for another 60 years. If you don’t know what I’m talking about you might want to crack open a book. As communities Blacks, Native Americans, and Latinos often tend to blame White people for their social problems because let’s face it, their ancestors are to blame. The Mexican people were robbed of their land and freedom to serve as slaves. The Africans were robbed of their land, their culture, and their freedom to serve as slaves. The Native Americans were stripped of their land and culture and forced to live on barren lands in the Plains. Not to mention what happened to the Jewish and Asian-American during WWII.

Not every Black person runs on the thug mentality. Not ever Black person grew up in the City, or without money. Not every Black person slings crack or sits on their ass. You sit there and make assumptions about an entire ethnicity just because of what you see on television. And then you turn around and wonder why Black people are so pissed off all the damn time!

There was nothing funny or satirical about what Michael Richards said. It wasn’t a joke. It was him while in a state of rage screaming one of the most offensive racial slurs in the history of man. And if Michael Richards expects me to accept his half assed apology he’s not only a racist he’s an asshole to boot. Afro-American hasn’t been used in the past 30 years. Either he filmed Seinfeld out of a time capsule or he just hasn’t kept up with the times.
