Melissa Etheridge quits paying her taxes

November 7th, 2008 // 300 Comments

Melissa Etheridge has decided to take a drastic approach to the passing of Proposition 8 in California: She’s not paying her state taxes. The singer posted on The Daily Beast letting the Governator and state officials know she’ll be enjoying the extra money in protest to the banning of gay marriage after it was already made legal:

Okay. So Prop 8 passed. Alright, I get it. 51% of you think that I am a second class citizen. Alright then. So my wife, uh I mean, roommate? Girlfriend? Special lady friend? You are gonna have to help me here because I am not sure what to call her now. Anyways, she and I are not allowed the same right under the state constitution as any other citizen. Okay, so I am taking that to mean I do not have to pay my state taxes because I am not a full citizen. I mean that would just be wrong, to make someone pay taxes and not give them the same rights, sounds sort of like that taxation without representation thing from the history books.
Okay, cool I don’t mean to get too personal here but there is a lot I can do with the extra half a million dollars that I will be keeping instead of handing it over to the state of California. Oh, and I am sure Ellen will be a little excited to keep her bazillion bucks that she pays in taxes too. Wow, come to think of it, there are quite a few of us fortunate gay folks that will be having some extra cash this year. What recession? We’re gay!
Oh and too bad California, I know you were looking forward to the revenue from all of those extra marriages. I guess you will have to find some other way to get out of the budget trouble you are in.

Wait. You can withhold your taxes to protest asinine laws? Nice! I quit paying mine too – until every single strip club across this great nation is free of discriminatory pasties legislation. Because, America, I have a dream that nipples will no longer be segregated from my eyesight over by the chicken wing table. DON’T TREAD ON ME!

@ Sarah, the self-serving hypocrisy from gays and lesbians, amazingly enough, has been raised to a whole new level. You probably voted for Obama… and are thrilled that the majority voted Obama for president. No one is challenging the legitimacy of his victory… fair enough.

Now, when the majority votes in favor of Prop 8, you question Prop 8′s legitimacy. Who are you to decide what election results are valid and which ones are not. Hypocrite.

If anyone is closed-minded, it would be you because you can’t get around to accepting the fact that you lost and that people don’t agree with you. You’re the one who is closed-minded.

  2. Milan

@ I HATE CLOSED MINDED BREEDERS

I think the people who voted for Prop 8 are the ones who have turned the cheek long enough, as gays and lesbians have attempted to twist and mutilate the very moral definitions that are revered by countless millions.

    Go fuck yourself.

  3. Anderson

“Anyways, she and I are not allowed the same right under the state constitution as any other citizen. ”

I don’t buy this for a second. Ethridge is well off. She must have lawyers. If her lawyers are so derelict in their duty that they have not informed this woman about California’s domestic partnership laws (which are gender neutral), then they need to be fired. Now. Domestic partners are afforded about 98% of the same rights are married California couples. Period. Yes this includes have to file states taxes JOINTLY as a MARRIED couple.

This isn’t about “rights”. It’s about sticking it to those “religious bigots”, and tearing them down.

  4. Mike

Maybe since I am from NJ the land of lawyers, why are my rights to what I think is the sanctity of marriage be ripped away from me?

We have laws for where not to put trash, where to smoke, where not to eat, where to put bathrooms in public places. Heck there are laws for guaranteeing cups of ice water at theme parks (yeah in some states). Come on…

Why can’t we have a law that make Civil Union have the same rights as Marriage. If this is just about rights that should do.

Are we all so close minded and petty that we can not resolve this in a way that benefits both sides of the argument?

  5. Weeds

What about those people who don’t have the right to smoke weed, drive 100 mph on the left side of the road, or shoot kittens. Should they stop paying their taxes?

  6. It’s a publicity stunt. A damn good one, though. And her points are valid.

This whole issue shouldn’t have been put to a vote. Constitutional issues should be handled by experts in interpreting the constitution.

  7. Lisa

I am truly sickened by these offensive comments. I mean, I am completely against Prop 8, but WTF? Calling someone vile, disgusting names only proves that you are in fact the very thing you called that person. You have illusions that you are better than everyone else and but really have crap self-esteem.

I have no issue with people voting for what they believe in as long as it doesn’t get as gross and horrendous as these anti-homosexual remarks. I am frankly nauseated.

  8. Elite

Right Keith. Lets let the intellectual elite make our decisions for us. Why did we even vote? A panel of experts should have decided who would be president!
Think. Think again. Then, maybe, post.

  9. burungi

Hey 213, here in California, it’s our REPUBLICAN Governor who’s raising the hell out of all our taxes. Stop mimicking all the McCain/Palin hate and retoric.

  10. Nauseated

Lisa, let me tweak your words a smidge:

“I am truly sickened by these offensive comments. I mean, I am completely **FOR Prop 8**, but WTF? Calling someone vile, disgusting names only proves that you are in fact the very thing you called that person. You have illusions that you are better than everyone else and but really have crap self-esteem.

I have no issue with people voting for what they believe in as long as it doesn’t get as gross and horrendous as these **PRO-homosexual** remarks. I am frankly nauseated.”

Sorry Lisa, but if you’re gunna bash those who supported Prop 8, then expect your own words to be used against you and your ilk.

    Self-defeating.

  11. WoofDog

@ 260, Obama won. Forget about McCain/Palin already. It’s done and dead now.

  12. WoofDog

@ 259, Obama won. Forget about McCain/Palin already. It’s done and dead now.

  13. Truth doctor

This whole “equal rights” issue is a red herring. She has the right to marry a man, just like any other woman. THAT, my friends, is equal rights. What she’s after is expanded rights, though nobody will come out and say it because it’s not as dramatic.

As far as letting constitutional scholars decide things, I’m all for it. That would eliminate, in no particular order:
    - income taxes
    - medicare/medicaid
    - welfare
    - social security
    - affirmative action
    - eminent domain
    - many gun laws
    - the federal reserve

  14. Stogie

Melissa Etheridge is a another no talent, overpaid prima donna, with an opinion that no one in the mainstream gives a flying fuck about. I hope she does stop paying taxes. Then they can put her in prison and shut her the hell up.

  15. MJAbraham

I just can not imagine that a country or state even allows its residents to vote for the rights of a minority. Democracy is that you allow everyone regardless of what they are to be free as long as their freedom does not shadow others. Now, does gay marriage restrict anyone? if it does to you, then you are gay-in-denial as per 612 researches published in the last 50 years.

  16. ……………Hard Rock?
She is familiar with the FAGGOTS working over there?

  17. America

FUCK ALL YOU IGNORANT FASCIST PIG HOMOPHOBES! Keep your fucking noses out of my life and bedroom and mind your own fucking business.

  18. Mark

I think it’s interesting that some people believe in a democracy when things go the way they want, but they don’t when the decision goes against them.

In saying that, I think it’s disgusting that they don’t have the right to marry who they love.

  19. Melissa, count me in.

  20. Jedidiah Sorokin-Altmann

Do I support Etheridge not paying her taxes? No, I can’t go that far. It’s an obligation regardless of things like Proposition 8. That said, the level of hatred and homophobia in the comments is despicable. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

As for the commentators who are claiming that gay people have the same rights to marriage as everyone else-the right to marry a person of the opposite sex, that argument was tried in the racial misogenation laws that barred interracial marriage. “Nobody is being discriminated against! Everyone has the same right-to marry someone of the same race!” That bigoted line of argument was struck down by the US Supreme Court in 1967. I fail to see how that type of logic is any more valid when applied to gays and lesbians than it was when applied to interracial marriage.

  21. Elite

Hey #263 (Truth doctor). I was wrong when I replied to Keith’s post (see #256/258)
Your analysis and conclusions are DEAD ON! That is, assuming that they go by The Constitution, and not the current, feel-good, tweak meanings to suit their agenda, “who cares what the founding fathers Really meant” position.

    Thanks for the correction!

At the very least, lets get rid of tax withholding. I bet there would be a lot more interest in what the gov’t wants to spend our money on if everyone had to stroke a tax check every quarter.

It’s as predictable as the sun coming up in the morning: liberals are all about the first amendment – as long as it’s not against something they hold dear.

“Shut down the board! Shut down the board! People are saying mean things about me or my friends!”

    What an f’ing fascist…

  23. Sheeeeit.

You guys scare the fuck out of me.

So you believe homosexuality is wrong… SO WHAT. It is not up to the government to decide.

Replublican used to be a term applied to those who felt the government should not interfere. Less government involvement, more power to the people… all people, including those with so-called alternative lifestyles.

She has a right to feel the way she does. Educate yourself.

How is homosexuality in any way related to murder… unreal!

  24. CJ

I just hate that the celebrities are in a panty bunch over a loss in gay rights. What a bummer. If they aren’t happy…ain’t nobody happy. Who will show us the way to gaudy and how to piss away money on crap? We need guidance in this area…people are hurting…we need to know there are still people out there who are unaffected by the realities of unemployment and financial catastrophy. Darn it. I mean, on the one hand the people stood up for getting beyond race to put the first black man in office…that is awesome. I hope shooting down the gay marriage proposal doesn’t send the wrong message to gays…chin up celebrities..we can’t afford to have you upset AND have an economy going to hell in a hand basket at the same time. Best wishes on your speedy return to simply thinking about your own sorry asses.

Hmmm. I can think of a reason not to pay taxes too…she probably has more loop holes and doesn’t really pay what she should anyway – They really don’t want to be like everyone else – they want to have their way all the time.

56mm didn’t vote for Obama – but he’s our president now – it wasn’t everyone’s choice – but everyone has to live with it.

Suck it up Melissa, or whatever it is you do…and shave your stache…

your music sucks – always has – never been a fan – and this isn’t going to change it that’s for sure

This is the reason why people target gays. I don’t condone it, but the gays are unreasonable freaks of nature who like to pretend that they are open-minded.

  29. burungi

Why, why, WHY can’t white trash just simmer down and accept that EVERYTHING changes. We are evolving, as a people, and that means were becoming more and more diverse and there will be more and more equality. It’s happening and it’s not going to change just because you throw temper tantrums and start flinging racial slurs. Yes, I know it’s scary but that’s life. Get with the program. Hell, China is the next big world power (unless President Obama can turn the sad tide of the Bush years). Better brush up on your Mandarin!

  30. Cleveland

For some reason just because some idiots believe in some mythical being created by ancient mental midgets that needed to come up with an explanation for the existence of the sun and moon which eventually evolved into thousands of different faiths; they think it gives them some kind of special power to deny equal rights law-abiding tax-paying consenting adults that love differently than they do.

You dont’ want to marry someone of your own sex, don’t. Nobody is making you. But your religion has no place in civil society dictating what legal relationships other consenting adults can enter. You don’t want anyone telling you what to believe as far as religion is concerned but you think your religion gives you the right to dictate others lives? Bullshit.

Your beliefs do not give you any more rights than anyone else. Your faith doesn’t make you a better person, more ‘moral’ or more special than anyone else. The only purpose your religion serves is to feed your pathetic ego and insecurities about life.

To the guy posting as God: The truth is that you don’t exist. You are a figment of the imagination of insecure delusional sociopathic narcissists that are just afraid to die. So go fuck yourself.

  31. Textus

Man, the rant was so sad. Her whole life is centered around sucking on pussy and is mad that people don’t agree with her lifestyle ‘choice’. Homosexuality is a behavior not a skin color. Just a pedophilia, necrophilia, bestiality are sexual behaviours. Should we next hand out marriage licenses for a women and German shepherd. Surely that would be restricting her civil liberties as well. Our how about marrying 4 different lesbians at the same time. Why not marriage to an inanimate object, while we are at it? Your turn on’s are your business but don’t destroy marriage simply because you hate straight people and traditional marriage reminds you that your behavior is not normal.

  32. TetterkeT

I think she went about this all wrong. She sounds too emotional and you can never win an argument that way. A better argument in her favor might have been,”no taxation without representation.” The state government isn’t standing up for her basic human rights, so perhaps she shouldn’t have to pay taxes.

  33. Natalie

I’m going to quit paying my taxes until they legalize weed.

  34. Jeff

Mellissa Etheridge is a dumb bitch. I wish she would move her sorry skank ass out of the country. She would obviously be much happier elsewhere, and so would I. Best case scenario; they thrown her stupid ass in jail with the other dykes. It’s a shame that she’s too stupid to understand how influential a thing like the tolerance of gay marriage is. She should look into the recent RAND Corp. studies linking teenage pregnancy to watching shows that glamorize sex. She might learn a thing or two, like that most people are ignorant, and reenact things they see on TV like mindless lemmings. Of course, a moronic carpet-muncher like Etheridge would probably say that the study is a fake, and refuse to pay her car insurance. Stupid bitch.

  35. I don’t think any should really get married unless they have to, basically do it for the kids. Otherwise the legal issues are a mess.

  36. Ok guys

Ok, so I’m really depressed reading a lot of comments. I could concede points to some of you who actually give good reasons, like “majority ruled”, etc. because, although I disagree with that, it makes logical sense. However, then you guys say such awful things. And I’m gonna say this to people on “my side” of the issue. All of you who talk about religious people being child molesters is simply reversed bigotry. I myself am supporting of gay marriage, but I am also Christian so a great deal of these comments distress me. You want your comments and arguments to be taken seriously, then refrain from insults, faulty grammar, mindless crude language, it all detracts from what you are trying to say. It also makes me less willing to listen to you. Just because the Internet is anonymous doesn’t mean you have the right to be an asshole. Remember there is a living, breathing human being on the other end of you comment and they can feel and hurt from what you’re saying.
    Thank you

  37. Wow

Hey # 286. Did you read your post before you clicked the “Post Your Comment” button???
You say “I could concede points to some of you who actually give good reasons” and then follow with “although I disagree with that, it makes logical sense” Wow!
Then you decry “faulty grammar”, and then follow that with “Remember there is a living, breathing human being on the other end of you comment and they can feel and hurt from what you’re saying.” Again, Wow!
Sit down and really think about what you want to say before you start typing!

  38. Ann

    How melodramatic.

  39. V

I see her point, but she does still enjoy many of the benefits besides marriage that come with being a citizen. Tell her to keep her money. Then tell her to stay away from public parks. Tell her to never call the police if she needs help. She can buy a car, but keep it off public roads. There’s more to life and citizenship than marriage. And what’s the big deal anyway? There’s just going to be another proposition a few years from now that will challenge this one. Jesus, Melissa, grow up.

  40. Lee Marie

    Ignorance. Complete and utter ignorance.
You cannot let the people decide on something like same-sex marriage.

For an elementary example that your childish brains just might understand:

It’s like letting the people decide on science-fiction movies.
Lots of people dislike sci-fi, so if they voted that no one could watch them ever again, it would be discriminating to those few who do. Watching sci-fi hurts no one.

    Being gay hurts no one.

The examples you use do hurt people – pedophilia? Come on.

And guys, don’t worry, I’m sure there’s a few chicks in this world who do want your disgusting dick, you know, like a hooker.

If you yourself are glad you aren’t gay, good for you, go fuck a straight whore.
If you are homophobic of gay people, that’s fine, but that doesn’t mean you can’t tolerate them and coexist with them. I coexist with people I hate everyday, and you know what? I’m still alive, I haven’t died, I haven’t become one of them.

I dislike religion, I’m not going to vote to take away religion. It’s a person’s natural right.

    Being gay hurts no one.
    Bigotry and discrimination does.
They hurt the people who say it most.
    You say gays are sick.
I therefore think that you’re mentally unstable because their is no logic behind your mindless babble.

Homosexuality has long been observed in animals.
    It is a natural occurrence.
If you think people should just get past that because animals do it, well then maybe you should just plain stop having sex.

Seriously, stop having sex, I mean, have you heard of “exponential growth” in relation to the population? Good lord, everyone should be gay just to control this shit!

For every single argument against gay marriage, there is a counter-argument for it.

In the end, it’s about letting everyone have their natural rights. If you don’t like it, that’s too bad, it doesn’t affect you in any way.

I dislike mushrooms, I am not going to take mushrooms away from everyone else.

You dislike gay marriage, good for you, you have no right to take it away from everyone else.

  41. Lee Marie

    @ 289

“There’s more to life and citizenship than marriage. And what’s the big deal anyway? There’s just going to be another proposition a few years from now that will challenge this one. Jesus, Melissa, grow up.”

–There is more to life. However, marriage has become a cornerstone of life itself.
That’s why it is so important. People look down on those who aren’t married once they reach a certain age. Marriage provide other benefits that contribute to life.

There will be another proposition, but it will only happen because of strong acts like this.

Grow up and think about these things throughly before taking one aspect of this and posting such jargon.

  42. All In Favor

Melissa may be making a statement, but the government is not going to tread lightly on her refusal to pay her state taxes in CA. This is a quintessential case of mixing apples with oranges. The state will recoup your taxes with interest and penalties added on.

  43. Bickus Dickus

Remember when this wretched dyke came on some show with her head all bald and shit, looking like the queer eyed version of Mr Clean.

She sang a Janis Joplin song, and changed the words to suit her gayness.

    From Piece of My Heart

Janis lyrics: “Didn’t I make you feel…like you were the only MAN….”

    Bull-dyke lyrics: “Didn’t I make you feel….like you were the only ONE….”

She’s singing a classic song and takes it upon her gay self to change the lyric, apparently since she’s so fucking gay that if she even said anything about loving a Man her big gay bald head would explode. Fuck you Etheridge. I wish California could also take away your right to sing crappy fucking music.

Lou Diamond Phillips is just gotta be looking at this fucking three-toed Sloth and saying “How the fuck did I lose my wife to this fucking creature????”

My heart goes out to you Lou, and you were great in La Bamba

  44. Lee Marie

    HAHAHA @ 293, you’re such a loser.

  45. bootlips

This is what happens when you let freaks vote. They shouldn’t have the same rights as normal people. They are too emotional. They have one-track minds. It’s all about being queer, acting like degenerates, bashing religion, forcing schools to teach that being queer is normal, extorting tax dollars to any cause that teaches about being queer, and forcing tax payers to pay for their little artsy shows. By the way, I don’t believe in God. Don’t use your hatred of religion on me.

  46. All In Favor

The essence of Prop 8 is equality. But the vote was approximately 50/50 with the proponents of the ballot question winning narrowly. If we use this as a barometer for the country, we see this is a divise issue, one that people feel strongly about.

Hence, a compromise is in order:; Civil unions laws should be enacted in CA to grant same sex couples AND hetersexual couples WITH no religious affiliation alll the rights of married people. Going forward, those straight people who want their committment to each other to be recognized by God will be married. All others (gay & straight couples) will have the same rights under a civil union.

The slippery slope that most opponents of Prop 8 fear is 1. based on their religion and 2. knowing that supporters of same-sex “marriage” will not stop at that. They (gays) will next want to have all TV commercials include gay couples; all public schools teaching classes on being gay, etc. and everything marketed from a 50/50 perpsective, with an eventual goal of the disintegration of all religion. They want control and that is not fair to the other side.

As for Melissa Etheridge, she needs to be put on a leash.

  47. KimberWolf

Single people pay state taxes, too.

  48. Lee Marie

295: You’re the biggest freak on this whole board.

296: Why no religious affiliation for gays? I think that is a brilliant idea I have heard before, if only it would be spread more, however, God is not against gays. The bible, written by men, has one line against gays, who is to say that is a line of God, as it is one line, it is not a reoccurring theme.

And, yes, they will stop at that. Once they stop at that, they will be happy, and life will take it’s course. Blacks did not petition to be shown more in the media, or to have classes taught about them, it just happened. Does that make it wrong? No.

297: Yes, they do, and should, so long as none of their natural rights are being taken away, as is Melissa’s.

  49. Amy

On the argument that gay people have the same rights as everyone else because they can marry someone of the opposite sex:

Someone has already pointed out that this argument was put forth and subsequently shot down during the debate on interracial marriage.

Now, lets hypothesise a ‘what if’ situation: What if the people of your state voted by a narrow margin that marriage be defined as between two people of the same sex? Would you as a heterosexual then be content that you had the same right as everyone else to enter into a same-sex union? Of course not!

PS. To the dude who is all worked up about Etheridge substituting “one” for “man” in a Janis Joplin song – the beautiful irony here is that it is pretty well accepted that Janis was a bisexual woman – and a rather promiscuous one at that. In fact, there are even those who argue that Janis was a lesbian who maintained hetero relationships (and dalliances) to keep up an image.

  50. Bully

    k. 33% says “get some penis, exclamation point, couple curses, yap bap bap”
nother 33% says “thats stupid, you hiding behind being gay stop bitching and pay cuz I have to, too”
another 33% “your right, I could give a shit who you screw, you won the first vote,.the revote is a giant limp dick move- go get married and fund a few pothole fixes”
.9999 Says(Me). Its cool so many folks comment. I just think its right on you feel strong enough and comfortable enough to throw it out there.

    right on Americans.
