Mel Gibson’s wife wants a divorce

April 13th, 2009 // 115 Comments

Mel Gibson’s wife Robyn filed for divorce on Good Friday, according to TMZ:

Sources tell us there is no prenuptial agreement — they were married in 1980, before Mel Gibson amassed a fortune estimated at $900 million back in 2006. Under the laws of California, community property — which includes earnings — is divided 50/50.
Robyn is also asking for spousal support and attorneys fees.
Robyn lists the date of separation as “to be determined.” This is important, because earnings generally cease to be community property when the couple separates. There could be a skirmish over this. We’re told the couple grew increasingly apart over the last few years, especially since Mel’s drunk driving arrest in 2006.

Wow. She divorced the guy who made The Passion of the Christ on Good Friday? I hope she learned the secret of his seven herbs and spices because he’s definitely not telling her now. The Colonel holds no quarter for blasphemers!

Why doesn’t Randal have anything nice to say about Mel?

Sorry Mel,if Randal has nothing nice to say….

#39/43 I think YOU’RE missing the point. By your reasoning, why does Mel “need” any of the money he has? There’s no cap on what he, or anyone, can earn, and therefore no cap on her half. Sorry if that amount offends you, and really sorry he didn’t marry you instead, but you won’t be getting the difference if she gets less according to your plan. She GETS child support on top of that because HIS child will be a minor for 8 more years, and he won’t be raising him, she will. That holds for whether you make $50,000 a year or $5,000,000.

FYI, he “wasn’t there as well” when he was off filming out of the country for many months at a time – that made her a single parent for a large part of the year.

Men have to understand that if you are going to cheat and screw around on your partner then you should not bitch and moan when she slams you with a divorce. I know, I am a lawyer.

sure you are and what do you say to women who cheat?
Hmm nothing. That’s when your double standards come in to play.

we all know the law is one-sided and sexist. It’ll protect women no matter what but when a man is in the same position it’ll protect the woman but common sense has to play a part with you “lawyers” at some point.
If you get more than you need to live on why do you need supplements?

And this goes for a men as well though when was the last time a man got a huge payout? or even a 50/50 split?

“It sounds like she introduced him to religion.”

Good Lord, #47, you’re retarded even by Superfish-retard standards, which are almost unmeasurable to begin with.

Mel got his psycho conservative pre-Vatican II Catholicism from HIS FATHER. I thought everybody knew that.

Mel’s wife is an Episcopalian, hardly an extremist. But Mel is on record saying that she’s going to hell, because there is only one set of beliefs that are true, and he’s got ‘em (not her):

“Gibson was interviewed by the Herald Sun in Australia, and the reporter asked the star if Protestants are denied eternal salvation. “There is no salvation for those outside the Church,” Gibson replied. “I believe it.” He elaborated: “Put it this way. My wife is a saint. She’s a much better person than I am. Honestly. She’s, like, Episcopalian, Church of England. She prays, she believes in God, she knows Jesus, she believes in that stuff. And it’s just not fair if she doesn’t make it, she’s better than I am. But that is a pronouncement from the chair. I go with it.”"

  6. Anon

Nope she wasn’t a single parent while he was away.
What about a child where both parents work?
    are they orphans between 9-5?

    nope.
    What a retarded statement.

  7. ymous

Anon, like your name, you have only half a point at best. I do respect your lust for getting pwn’d. It makes the internet more fun.

“When asked about the Catholic doctrine of “Extra Ecclesiam nulla salus”, Gibson replied, “There is no salvation for those outside the Church … I believe it. Put it this way.

So she was dragged into religion kicking and screaming.
    Like Katie Holmes?

    Nope.

If Mel Gibson was a woman and also the much wealthier party, she will have to pay up the same way as he does, and pay even child support if her husband would have main custody. Don’t think that women get special treatment in courts, its just most of this cases are similar to Mel Gibson one.

Fact is, either man or woman, after being with your partner for a long period of time, everything is meant to be divided 50/50 according to law.

  13. obvious

She wasn’t being dragged into religion. She was being forced to maintain her own sane religious views while protecting herself and the kids as much as possible from her husband’s insanity.

It’s an indisputable point. You might argue about what that should translate to in terms of money, but he’s nuts and she’s not, and she’s in charge of the kids. If you’ve lived a very sheltered life you might not be able to realize what a difficult job she’s had.

if you believe that I wish I lived in your world.

Show me one example of a man taking a rich woman to the cleaners.

    Or getting 50/50.

I live in the uk and a man here can’t even get custody of his own kids.
America is light years ahead for mens rights but there is still a gender bias in the courts which you might not see if you’re a woman.

    Lol.

    Just read Jew’s comment.

I’m not actually defending Mel Gibson.
He’s a freak I just think it’s wrong she can get hundreds of millions AND spouasal support.
Its greedy And if I was a judge I would give her less for the gaul of it.

When you get over a certain amount in a divorce other payments should be swallowed up in that lump sum.

It stops being about a resolution between two people and more about a game to get more for one and for another to stop paying as much as they can.

Thats when all focus on the children is gone and they are used as pawns for more money/less money etc.

I think they’re both whack jobs and deserve each other like I’ve said before.

  22. Dr. Phil

What we have isn’t a problem with the law, it’s a problem with bitchy men. A real man makes commitments that he’ll keep. If he gets married and counts on his wife to do most or all of the family- and household-related work, and there’s a TON of work when you have a big family, he doesn’t begrudge giving her half (at least) of the family’s financial worth if the marriage ends. He knows perfectly well that by living that way for decades, she has very little capacity to suddenly make money for herself, while he possesses all the earning potential that his years of focusing mostly on work (not family) has built. He also knows that he’s not going to change stripe and become Mr. Mom for the rest of his life, so she’ll continue to take care of the kids most of the time (which is also what the kids want). He realizes all that AND DOESN’T WHINE ABOUT IT because he’s a man and he doesn’t bitch about the responsibilities associated with his chosen life.

As I said previously, of course the ideal is 50/50 but in most cases (especially when you are dealing with very wealthy clients) you have to compromise and you find yourself getting much less then when you ask for. This is what women have to deal with too and I doubt Mel’s wife will get anything near what she asks (even though she invested 20 something year in the marriage) but you have to start high and start negotiating (that is why it is also a good idea for her to ask for child support too). You have no idea how many times my clients who going through divorces (mostly female) got near to nothing in their divorce settlements. Believe me, you are delusional if you think they have it better.

  24. Anon

    #67

Believe me I’m not delusional because I think women get it better.
The settlements are out there that prove it when the roles are reversed.
But she’s not the only one who put 20 years into the marriage.

Think we’ll have to agree to disagree.

  25. PunkA

#51, of course she did. Hell, she even asked for all of her “jew”elry in the petition.

  26. rumble grumble gurgle roar

seven herbs and spices….that was so funny, I just shot water through my nose. nicely played superficial writer..nicely played!

  27. justifiable

#56 Talk about retarded – you really should look in the mirror. Ask anyone whose husband or wife is deployed overseas – they ARE a single parent when they’re the only parent who’s there 24/7 for months at a time. Even if both parents work, they ARE both at home afterwards – and since one or the other is usually available to pick up the kids if they’re sick, hurt or in jail, the kids aren’t orphans between 9-5. But if Dad isn’t there for that (for whatever reason – desertion, job, armed forces, prison) then Mom IS a single parent while he’s gone, and vice versa. Phoning it in from Scotland doesn’t make Mel a partner in raising the kids. So – “nope”.

You want a turnabout example? Anne Heche and Coley Laffoon. He took her for a good amount because he stayed home with their kid and didn’t work on his own career – it worked to her advantage because she had unpaid child care and their child benefitted, and he got compensation when the marriage failed. I think Tom Arnold got money from Roseanne Barr, too. Fair’s fair, neither gender should be exempt when the woman earns and the man puts his efforts into raising the kids.

And since Mel’s such a traditionalist, insisting on a well-nigh Biblical role of obedience and child-rearing and bearing for the little woman, if he challenges this then he’s a bigger hypocrite than I think he is.

  28. mike nike

Mel needs a shave, hes freaking me out.

  29. justifiable

#71 And she’s no more “greedy” for asking for half than Mel is for asking – and getting – millions to direct, produce and star in films. He’s paid highly because the studios want him to do a particular job in his particular way. And the same goes for her – he felt only she could be his wife, mother to their children, and raise them. And FYI, she’s not “asking” – it’s a 50/50 law. If you disapprove, stay in the UK and don’t move to yourself and your assets to California. It’s obvious the sheer amount of their wealth is what offends you, but too bad, that amount doesn’t matter here – why should she get a “lump sum” or any less than the law allows when she was a full partner in the marriage? She’ll be raising their youngest child for the next 8 years, so spousal support isn’t out of line.

And it’s “gall” – unless you mean that she’s really French for asking.

  30. havoc

This is why God created pre-nups. Never, ever get married. But if you do get a fucking pre-nup.

  34. elizabeth

why is there such an antagonistical view of men and women in america? it’s like you all hate everyone who belongs to the other gender. but then you go out seeking them for your needs (sex, money, etc.). sounds like widespread and deep-seeded mental issues if you ask me…and a whole lot of selfishness and hypocrisy. pick one or the other. either reject the opposite gender completely and live alone being celibate, or accept that men need women and women need men and try to live harmoniously together and respect each other. men and women were made to compliment each other and meet different needs for each other. you guys got it all twisted with these gender wars. i suggest you work on your mental states…maybe throw a little spirituality and wisdom in there while you’re at it. you can only fight against and hate others so much before you self destruct–both as individuals and as a culture.

  35. adfasdf

77 – Bullshit a single parent has the earn their money ON TOP of raising the kids.

When someone is delpoyed overseas in the military their wife gets money. So she doesn’t have to go be a waitress, while Timmy is chewing on the table edges at home.

    Huge difference.

Anyways, biblically, divorce or cheating isn’t allowed, so after she bangs someone else he’s technically allowed to stone her.

  36. Gando

Holy crap! No wonder his wife wants to divorce him with a face like that!

  37. justifiable

#85 You need to widen your concept of “single parenting” as well as your idea what the military pays these days. Tip your waitress, please.

Valerie Anders, wife of astronaut Bill A.: “You were, in effect, A SINGLE PARENT for the week. And when the men came home on the week-end in their T-38s their first obligation was to go to the office …and catch up on their mail, do their business at the office and then come back and spend time with the family in the time that was left of the weekend, which was generally late Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday.” Bill Anders didn’t disagree with her statement, either.

I LOL your last statement, but that means Mel should be buried under a pile of stones by now for being an adulterer, right? Oh, no, wait, that’s only for women. Gee, that gender bias seems hardly fair, does it?

  38. Drundel

  49. Jim Jones

@all you naysayers calling Mel’s wife a golddigger:
How little people in this thread seem to understand marriage: it doesn’t matter who makes the money. When two people get married, it’s supposed to be a joint commitment/household/etc.
Besides, I don’t see anywhere there where it says she’s asking for 450 million, only spousal support. The article mentions that he’s worth 900 million and California is a community property state, but it does NOT state that she’s asking for half his money.
More than likely the spousal support is thrown in there to make sure she does get some money, likely a lump sum that will be settled upon during the proceedings.
Try opening your mind and thinking a second before resorting to your knee-jerk reactions, tools.
