Leroi Moore of Dave Matthews Band passes away at 46

August 20th, 2008 // 68 Comments

Leroi Moore the iconic saxophone player for the Dave Matthews Band passed away yesterday from complications from a June ATV accident on his farm, according to the AP:

Moore died at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was admitted with complications that arose weeks after the June 30 wreck, according to a statement on the band’s Web site. It did not specify what led to his death, and nursing supervisor Galina Shinder said the hospital could not release details.

Dave Matthews Band played last night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Dave, who always credited Leroi arranging the band’s songs, dedicated the show to his late friend. “It’s always easier to leave than be left,” Matthews told the crowd.

Thanks to all the DMB fans who wrote in. Condolences to you along with Leroi Moore’s friends and family for their loss.

ATV attack, huh? Little fuckers are getting out of hand… first in Iraq and now, here, on our own turf. Vote McCain, he’ll stop these senseless 4-wheeled atrocities.

More white and caramel women in bikinis please. Under age 30 and 120 lbs.

    Thanks in advance.

Jesus Christ people. Show a little respect. If you don’t have something nice or relevant to say, then don’t say anything at all. A kind and gentle soul just passed.

I’ve been to 25 shows with LeRoi and I’ll never see him stage left again. It was heartbreaking news to come home to last night after work.

The other two would be the following:
    Isaac Hayes
    Bernie Mac

I enjoyed watching Leroi perform with Dave Matthews in concert. He will be missed.

Dave Matthews is overrated. Which is the next one to die? Bernie Mac, Ike Hayes, this nobody..yet the very white Patrick Swayze is beating pancreatic cancer.

White people are the toughest I guess.

Why is this guy so special? I feel sad for his friends and family, but I saw 13 Americans die in a helicopter crash in Iraq and did anyone other than their families care? Fuck no. Fucking liberals use it as a way to trash our Country.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s bit crass that Dave Matthews did his show last night? I know ‘the show must go on’ and all that, but I would think that the death of a man who you worked and toured with for what? 20 years? might be a bit heavy. Personally, I would be too devastated to go to work.
    Nah, we gotta get paid!

I gotta say Superficial writer I always credit you with recognizing the few times class is called for in celebrity reporting. Every famous passing is posted without any catty comments and if there’s one time to do that it’s when someone has died. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for you catty comment writers! You don’t get to make fun of dead people anymore! They’re not around to defend themselves anymore and they have a grieving family out there somewhere that could easily read this. It just isn’t right.

RIP LeRoi. For those of you who think it’s in poor taste for ‘the show to go on’, I’m sure that’s the way he would have wanted it. He played with his friends for years, and he would want to be remembered with the music he helped create. I am excited to see the Band in a few weeks, but he will be sorely missed, and there will be a solemn mood for the remaining tour. It’s not all about the money, it’s about living out your life.

Yes I think you are because as a performer I would think that Leroi would want the show to go on and celebrate his life at the concert instead of just mourning his death. Even Paul McCartney wants people to celebrate his life with music when he dies.

    1. It’s Dave Matthews BAND, not Dave Matthews. He’s not the only member.

    2. It wasn’t at all crass or cold for them to go on with the show. Music is what they do and Roi would’ve wanted them to get out there and carry on. It’s the spirit of the DMB family. Music is a catharsis.

Bummer. I haven’t liked Dave Matthews since that shitty “Everyday” CD and then started jumping on the political bandwagon blindly supporting assholes like Gore and Kerry but had been a huge fan in the early 90′s. I’d seen the DMB a couple of times, sad to hear of Leroi’s death, I didn’t even know he’d been injured in an accident.

I hate saxophones, they’re like the instrument made to sound like a fart but Leroi and the guy from Morphine’s playing always sounded good to me.

Hey Wellsley Snipers, plenty of people know who this man is. And he lived a MUCH more meaningful life than sitting around posting hate-filled juvenile crap on the Internet to satisfy a perverse fetish for pissing people off. Don’t worry, take solace in the fact that when you kick the bucket one day, your life is probably so worthless, even your own mom won’t bat an eye. There… there… does that make you happier now?
