February 6th, 2008 // 132 Comments

The New York City medical examiner ruled that Heath Ledger’s death was accidental and resulting from the abuse of prescription medications. Heath was suffering from sleeping disorders and anxiety issues. TMZ reports:

The NYC medical examiner has finished the toxicology report following the death of Heath Ledger, and has just ruled that the actor’s death was caused by “acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam, and doxylamine.”

People reports Michelle Williams is in Australia today with Heath’s family. A private funeral will be held Saturday.

  1. #48 – Personally, I enjoy Daily Cooze…

#49 – I’ve seen her pussy. It made me cry tears of joy. Then I went home and smacked my wife.

  2. your conscience

#50 – Exactly my point, douchebag. Also, you and LadyJane should hook up since you are both so obsessed with people going down on you.

  3. Art Linkletter

Not to be the buzz kill here, but the man was old enough to know better than to mix that many medications. Considering the types of medications and his recent depression, I’d say the M.E. was paid off, or felt sorry for his parents. (Likely paid off as movie stars have multi million dollar insurance policies, and his parents would be beneficiaries)

In other words if you can’t save your boy… at least save his money.

I feel bad for his parents, but I can’t help but feel only so bad. I can’t shake the thought that he had to know what he was doing and what the outcome of it would be.

  4. #52 – We already have. And I tell ya, our spouses were amazed at the electricity. Really, they didn’t mind a bit. Well, when I came she ducked and I broke her window… but still… Now run along and watch Brokeback (again)… just be sure to bring enough Kleenex to last you until the closing credits.

  5. hey idiots, just cause he had traces of those drugs in his body, it does mean he swallowed them down at the same time with one swig of beer. yes, that would be an intentional OD. he was suffereing from anxiety and prolly took some of that shit to get through the day. and the sleeping pills at night. the particular cocktail was a deadly combo unfortunately.

and by the way, if you wound up dead and someone looked at the contents of your stomach and found eggs, a ham sandwhich, sheppard’s pie, and your midnight greasy pizza and tater tot snack, it doesn’t mean you fucking BINGED on them all in one sitting.

  6. @41 & 49 Let me break it down for you butt munch. If the day should ever come that I do need to take some kind of medication, I am not dumb enough to pop one from each bottle with out knowing what they will do. Ledger was an dumb shit for getting percriptions from several differnt Doctors and then proceded to take them all at one time..

And Lady Jane does not have a penis, she has a very hot pus..

  7. your conscience

#54 – Will do. I’ll also make sure to bring enough Kleenex so I can share with you, as you cry over how much you wish you had the courage to admit to everyone that you always wanted to be pounded in the ass by a cowboy. Sniff, sniff.

  8. Mr. Sandman

#53. He was sleep deprived people don’t think clearly when they are sleep deprived. Sleep depivation causes simmilar impairment to alchohol intoxication. He was getting about 2 hours of sleep a night. Read up on sleep deprivation. Jebus, why is this basic information so forein to some people. If he should have known better to not mix medication you and so many others should know enough to understand the impairment effects of severe insomnia.

  9. Debris of another kind...

oh man oh man oh man… we are all forgetting how to read a sentence!

*”…acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam, and doxylamine.”*

    ACUTE INTOXICATION.

It is when you do too much of them and your liver can’t help you clean it out, so the blood stream is just really really full. The effects are slowing down of your heart beat, lung failure, liver failure, seizure, coma, any number of things… oh, and death.

Secondly, OXYCODONE is a very very serious drug, much akin to Heroin. Very easy to OD on.

Diazepam is for anxiety. or are the other “aze-pams” or “azo-lams”. They really calm you down. They also slow you down. For coming down off coke, or something else like, say, E, you can take a Diazepam in the morning, and go to sleep like a baby when it’s time to go to sleep, instead of, say, staying up all morning thinking, “how I do hate coming down from this!”

As for oxydodone, or a hydrocodone, you are looking at fast relief from any type of pain, and potential of passing out very quickly, in a sleep that’s induced by the downer effect, you got it. It also causes liver damage, and can have a very serious side effect if you have any previous conditions. You mix that with stuff in the “za-pams” section of the drug arcade, and you better be pickled or have a liver of steel to even survive it.

I’ve known countless druggies, and I learned most of my information from a former EMT who has been in and out of rehab for years. As a walking pharmacy, I’ve seen and heard many stories from him, but I would never, ever seem him mix that many drugs of those *types* together (!) unless he was really trying to kill himself.

RIP, Heath. I think he did it on purpose, and it really worked. This time.

  10. viceless wonder

#56. McLoven I see you have not answered my question so I shall take your silence as a clear indication that you are infact a hypocrite.

  11. @60 Dip Shit, I don’t read every comment every asshole posts on this site. But to answer your question, No, I don’t smoke, I don’t drive drunk, I drink in moderation, My McLoven is with the same person and therefore dose not need to be wrapped, I walk over 2 miles a day and mountain bike ride regularly. I get a physical evey year and I am heathly as a horse. And what does that have to do with taking a shit load of pills??

  12. Melissa

I love how everyone who makes comments on here has NEVER EVER done anything stupid that could have resulted in death, but luckily, it did not.

A girl walks home alone to her door after partying all night (she has done this thousands of times) but the one time some sick man attacks, rapes and kills her, it is “what a stupid girl. Shouldnt have been walking home alone and wouldnt be dead now”. It’s like come on!

Mostly everyone that dies, dies from doing something stupid. People who smoke cigarettes their whole life and then die when they’re 70 from lung cancer died of something stupid, but that doesn’t mean they are bad people and deserve to be bad mouthed.

Heath couldn’t sleep and was taking medication to help him. When you haven’t gotten any sleep, you can forget things. Maybe he forgot he took certain pills and took more. Anything could have happened and yet ignorant people still want to be like oh he was stupid and was asking for it blah blah blah. I hope you all die from something cool!!!

  13. deaconjones

    @ 50 YAY!

Fuck Limbaugh, what a fucking hypocrite that guy was, Mr Family Values Conservative, then he gets popped for taking Viagra out of the country
Why does he have fucking Viagra if he’s not married, what a bunch of fucking lying, two-faced hypocrites the Republicans are………………anyways

  14. Skip Smith

    The coroner said:

“We have concluded that the manner of death is accident, resulting from the abuse of prescription medications.”

  15. LL

RE “Funny how everyone makes all these hateful comments, yet, if something like this happened to someone you loved, I’m sure you wouldn’t say the same things.”

Wrong…. I think there’s enough celebrity wreckage for reasonably intelligent adults to know that mixing pills is not a smart thing to do. Whether he did it deliberately or not will likely never be answered. Who the hell knows what he was thinking? If his family wants to believe that it was accidental, fine by me. I have no problem with that, but that doesn’t make it less dumb. People seem to think that drugs you swallow are less harmful than drugs you inject or inhale, or that prescription drugs are somehow “safer” than the illegal ones. Not true. Many more people die from use of prescription drugs (both self-administered and doctor- or hospital-administered) than “illicit” drugs. Too many doctors are too quick to dispense drugs because a patient complains of something like “insomnia” or “stress.” When you have to take a pill to fall asleep, there is something wrong with you that pills can’t fix. I’m not saying insomnia isn’t real, just saying that I doubt it’s as much of a problem as people claim it is, and certainly not to the extent that we need so many drugs for it.

  16. mamadough

my bouts of insomnia are usually brought around by severe stress, followed by pissiness and being grumpy. im just wondering what the hell he needed pain pills for? fun?

    #57, are you baptist?

  17. Mal Reynolds

    62. Melissa
First, she shouldn’t have been wearing that tight skirt.
Second, People “who smoke cigarettes their whole life and then die when they’re 70 from lung cancer ” deserve to be ridiculed for their stupidity.

  18. Ed

The brand names of the drugs in question:

    Oxycontin
    Vicodin
    Valium
    Xanax
    Restoril
    Unisom

That’s 2 strong narcotics, 3 benzodiazapines, and an antihistimine, all of which are addictive and known to be abused.

That’s the medicine cabinet of a junkie. He might have been off illicit drugs, but obviously still struggling with abuse issues. Pretty common for someone who needs to look like he’s cleaning himself up. Expect to see alot more come about about multiple doctors, or prescriptions in others’ names, because no doctor would ever prescribe that combination of drugs, no matter how bad his insomnia was, especially if there was a history of abuse.

  19. Rip Hymen, MD (ob-gyn)

I can understand climbing the ladder on all the benzos for insomnia, especially if he was doctor shopping. But please splain the Percocet and Vicodin, which are well known to disrupt sleep. Prescribing them both happens only in cases of severe pain, like a bulging disc in your back that compresses a spinal nerve. Or in cases of celebrity painkiller abuse, like the doc that Winona Ryder (and others) used to get their stashes of legal opiates. All the sleeping pills allow people who are just dying to mourn him to have a nice sympathy excuse (he was a sensitive artist in great psychic pain)…but then Percocet and Vicodin pills show up on the list like little white bombs. It’s an addict’s list, folks.

  20. pauli

britney gave him the drugs, she is everywere..and when the police came.. the masseuse, the house keeper and jamie lynn have already hidden the pills

  21. What i want to know is can i get a slice of that baby. I’d totally rub my softness on it’s cheeks until it was time for spurt naps. And anybody would be a junkie after doing that “order” movie.

  22. viceless wonder

#60. Fuck face, if that shit is true about how you live then I can’t really insult you as the same goes for me but I am a lady (wait you did not say you are a man but, i willa ssume you will despite the risk af assumptions). The correlation is that many people are trashing Heath when they themselves have dangerous habits or vices or just do stupid fucking things that they know full well could kill them (or others). In other words many people trashing Heath could end up just like anytime. I can guarantee you are in the minority and most people insulting him are fatties who drive drunk or smoke and do a host of brainless dangerous shit. I don’t mind when people judge others if they are living well (we all judge it’s how society functions) but, I can’t stand hypocrites.

However there is a big difference between not being able to sleep and having severe debilating insomnia, I’ve seen it (not experienced it personally ) and it’s torture, in fact sleep deprivation is a form of torture. I still think he was not in his right mind when he took all that shit.

Anyway I don’t take any drugs at all and I actualy have several very serious illnesses (none of which are contageous or could have been prevented and I always led a clean life). So seeing people destroy their bodies makes me fucking sick, yet somehow I still feel badly for him. My doctors are amazed that I won’t take pain medication but, I prefer being of sound mind and not pumping chemical shit into my body. They also prefer it as the side effects are quite serious and dependency is likely. Plus I’ve lived with the pain for years so I’ve learnt to deal with it. Anyway when you get your MRI’s at children’s hospitals (sometimes that’s the only place they can fit you in) you learn to NEVER feel sorry for yourself. It’s amazing how high your pain threshold can be when you have a little fucking perspective.

  23. viceless wonder

*wait you did not say you are a man but, I will assume you are despite the risk of assumptions.( jesus that one got fucked up.

    *like him anytime

And all the other shit I misspelled.

  24. miggs

Like #68 says, he was a strung-out junkie trying to pass. It was working, too – look at all the people saying “he had turned his life around!” That, plus he was in great psychological pain and unable to sleep because of being separated from his daughter and throwing himself into intense movie roles. Please. There are lots of dangerous stressful jobs and acting sure isn’t one of them. He was being an actor, though – pretending to have put drug problems behind him, when in fact he was getting his opiates from Big Pharm instead of Big Nig. My favorite is “do you have any idea of the torment of extreme insomnia??!” Please – lots of people who abuse prescription painkillers have severely disrupted sleep. Why cite nebulous psychological causes when a direct chemical cause was clearly in play? The point is, this guy had the luxury in his life to stop working for awhile, go into rehab, kick his drug habits for real, and go back to his daughter and be a good responsible dad. He chose not to. Don’t say he was troubled by, distressed by, afflicted with, or any of that. Those terms belong to people with real illnesses and no money to pay for proper treatment. Heath had a drug habit and plenty of money and reason to deal with it the right way. Obviously he didn’t.

  25. Italian Stallion

Damn, all this idiot had to do was learn his tolerence. I know mine every friday night and it’s a lot more shit then that……..

  26. Mal Reynolds

viceless, you seem to have been diagnosed as a whiny little bitch as well. Shit, get off your high horse and take a chil pill.

  27. Kelly

Here’s my analysis and you will see it is an easy mistake to make. Here is what he was taking:

    1) His daily prescribed anti-anxiety medicine: Xanax (aka alprazolam)
    2) His insomnia sleep disorder medication: Restoril (aka tamezapam)
    3) Robitussin for his pneumonia or cold symptoms (contains the Doxylamine and hydrocodone)
    4) Aspirin/Percocet/Acetaminiphine (contains the Oxycodone) for the muscle aches and headaches caused by fever symptoms.
    5) Valium (aka Diazepam) (This is the only part I can’t explain)

All but #5 are typical for a person who has pneumonia and also suffers from depression and insomnia. 1 & 2 are probably what he took on a daily basis. #3 and #4 probably things he just began taking for his flu/pneumonia. Again, #5 is the only one I can’t explain and seems unusual for the average person to take if he was already on Xanax.

  28. viceless wonder

#76. No thanks Mal I don’t take pills, can’t you read. I’ve been diagnosed with many things but not whiny bitch syndrome that would be Jennifer Love Hewitt you are thinking of … oh and of course Jennifer Anniston (actually all Jennifers). What I have been diagnosed with is incurable fucking hotness and if you had the pleasure of seeing me, you’d shit your pants on the spot. I’ve seen it happen. Smelly butt, flattering.

  29. ixxy

OXY???? what???? Opiates will rape you no wonder this happened… oxycodone (AKA hillbilly heroin) is nuts, it should be taken off of the market because it’s so addictive and even those who actually do have severe pain who take it basically have to goto rehab to get off of it, basically they’re a junky. But, most people buy it off the street because it’s difficult to actually get a prescription unless you’ve had severe trauma, surgery or cancer.

  30. Mal Reynolds

Kelly, you missed the hydrocodone. And I would love to know what kind of doctor prescribes Oxycontin for muscle aches associated with fever.

  31. huh?

Kelly, you’re quite insane. Nobody prescribes oxy for aches and pains, especially if they’re already giving a cough medicine with hydro. To a person on mega-benzos. With a history of heroin addiction.

#68 nailed it – “Expect to see alot more come about about multiple doctors, or prescriptions in others’ names, because no doctor would ever prescribe that combination of drugs”.

  32. Mal Reynolds

Vice, I see you still have a pretty good sense of humor, though I doubt you’re that hot. Incontinence is quite common among the terminally ill.

  33. Mac an Ghaill

Thank you. I am very disturbed and saddened by Heath’s death. However, Oxycontin and Vicodin are not prescribed for anxiety, insomnia or depression. I was waiting for someone to catch that. Nowhere have I read that he was injured or in physical pain from something, which would be the reason to take the opiates. Regardless, R.I.P. Heath. You will be missed.

  34. Kelly

Umm..people…they didn’t find Oxycontin in his toxicology. They found OxyCODONE…two entirely different things. OxyCODONE is also known as PERCOCET. It’s a painkiller…. I don’t know about you but I take painkillers when my muscles hurt. Anytime I get sick, my neck and back muscles hurt. Especially when I have a fever.

I did not miss the HYDROCODONE. (It’s listed as “#3″) Police stated that they also found Robitussin in his apartment. Robitussin CONTAINS Hydrocodone. According to Wikipedia:

” Hydrocodone is an orally active narcotic analgesic and antitussive”

    ANTITUSSIVE = ROBITUSSIN

  35. Kelly

Oxycodone and Hydrocodone are listed FIRST in the toxicology because they list toxicology in order of their levels in the toxicity. There were only TRACE amounts of Oxycodone and Hydrocodone because, I suspect, they were not taken as pills (remember, the police did not name either of these as one of the prescriptions taken from Heath’s apartment), but were instead COMPONENTS of unprescribed medications such as ROBITUSSIN and ASPIRIN (percocet).

To clarify the record about the Oxycontin vs. Oxycodone, here is the toxicology:

  38. viceless wonder

#82. Well you are pretty funny yourself. It’s okay if you don’t believe me I mean why would you I could look like Jabba the Hutt or even worse Rosie O’Donell. The internet allows for some mighty tall tales. Irregardless I’m hot as fuck and I would so love to prove it but, the internet is crawling with freaks and I’ve already dealt with my fair share of stalkers. If I posted my pictures my beauty would cause riots and I just can’t be held responsible that, again. They say there is no such thing as perfection and it’s true that’s why I don’t have my health but, I have EVERYTHING else and it’s all fucking spectacular.

  40. Angel

I’m not familiar with all these drugs but could any of them have been taken with the rolled $20 bill? Also wondering what kind of sex life someone was capable of having while using these drugs….just wondering.

  41. pauli

kelly shut up….give us a break please….that shit is not interesting

  42. Kelly

Oh, the truth is not interesting? The fact that he wasn’t popping 50 pills and that everyone’s theory that he was a drug addict was incorrect is not interesting? I get it…this isn’t about a dead man’s (and someone’s father) reputation…it’s about your own personal entertainment…right?

  43. meow

Angel, YES people take oxycontin with a $20 bill. Some tards also take alprazolam with a $20

  44. #57 – I see you bought the limited (ahem) “uncut” director’s edition… the one with the free dildo and warming lube. How’s that working for you?

  45. Angel

    Damn…I was hoping it wasn’t possible…

  46. Skip Smith

Kelly, you’re a retard. The coroner said:

“We have concluded that the manner of death is accident, resulting from the abuse of prescription medications.”

Abuse is the key word here …

  47. Angel

Hypothetically, if a person was out socializing while under the influence of the drugs listed, would a nondrug user be able to tell that something was up?

  48. your conscience

#57 – I only bought it with you in mind, baby.

  49. your conscience

haha. i meant 94. You know who you are. ;)

  50. meow

Those under the influence of oxycodone often have pinpointed pupils…..It’s harder to tell when someone’s on benzos because everyone reacts to them differently. Some people act drunk on them. If someone you know has no memory of what happened the night before, they were prob on some kind of benzo.
