Hayden Panettiere attempted to rescue a pod of dolphins in a cove off of Japan. Hayden and six other activists rode their surfboards out into the water but were threatened by local fishermen, according to the Associated Press:
Fishermen on a boat approached the activists and ordered them to leave, shoving some of them with a long pole. An angry fisherman later shouted in the face of one of the protesters on the road above the cove. There did not appear to be any injuries.
“This baby stuck its head out and kind of looked as us, and the thought that the baby is no longer with us is very difficult,” Panettiere, who stars in the NBC show “Heroes,” said after coming ashore.
Dolphin hunting is apparently a Japanese custom and the activists’ interference angered some locals:
The local fishermen and their supporters say hunting dolphins — in this case, pilot whales — is a Japanese custom that outsiders have no business interfering with.
“Whales and dolphins are traditionally being used (as resources) in Japan,” said Hideki Moronuki, chief of the whaling section at the Japanese Fisheries Agency. “In this light, we cannot accept an argument simply based on emotional causes.”
Okay, clearly Hayden and her friends surfing was pretty lame. If ’80s movies have taught me anything, it’s that wicked cool surf moves can overcome any obstacle. Had Hayden done like a back flip or something righteous, we would be reading quotes from Japanese officials saying “Radical!” and “Saving the dolphins is totally bodacious!” But, I guess Hayden Panettiere really didn’t want to save the dolphins after all. Bogus.

I think she is just beautiful, she has a real body… not a super skinny-impossible-to-get body… and she tries to save the dolphins.. okokok.. it’s true.. it’s just impossible to surf for all the causes in this earth.. but would you really prefer her to be like Britney Spears all crazy and lost???..
And lets be honest… she’s got like the cutest boyfriend on earth!!
lol hayden. stupid bitch wants to save the world…even tho she dosnt realize that there are SOME pple in the world who arent born rich and have to do bad things they may not b proud of 2 feed their 8 kids…obv the gov’t is gonna say its a tradition…partly cuz it is and partly cuz they dont wanna admit there are SOME pple in their country who are so poor they have to kill fkn whales. what a stupid whore.
wow!!! You are an idiot, I may not think shes a good actress but at least she has the courage to use her fame for something good. She is not only sticking her neck out to help the thousands of dolphins being slaughtered but she is also helping the japanese people. Hello dolphin meat is poisonous to people containing high levels of mercury and being out to everyone in japan through false advertisement. You are a idiot if you have anything bad to say about someone trying to help such an amazing cause!!!
Hayden freaking risked her own life, and you guys are insulting her dress and her surfing skills? Is that even relevent? Seriously people, get a wake up call to reality.
i live in Japan right now and there are no dolphins or whales sold. (btw, i’m half japanese and half american. i CAN read japanese)
I think more than 95% have never eaten dolphin or whale meat. ppl in my school were like wtf, what does dolphin taste like?
I am hoping maybe some of you have seen the documentary ” the cove” By now. Hayden is a human being with a brain, cant say the same for most you posting comments saying this is the japanese culture.
To shed some light to some of you ill mannered youngings, I would like to say
1. The slaughtering happening is cruel and inhumane.
2. It is not a custom nor there culture to do this, So please do not discriminate agaisnt Japan who you should be anger at are the leaders allowing this to happen
3. More than 95% of the population of Japan had no idea this was happening.
And Don’t consider Dolphin as a food supply.
4. The fish market is in a high demand for fish ie:Tuna, sword fish and many others, 7 out of 10 people use this as a high protien factor in there diet.
So we can not blame the dolphines for our fish decline, when really it’s our own stupidity.
5. Dolphin meat is being sold around Japan labeled as other meats, therefore the population is eating it without knowing.
6. Dolphin Meat is extremely High in Mercury which is a toxic element we have released into the Ocean and has worked it’s way up the food chain to the dolphin, so people eat dolphin meat are exposed to this which again is highly toxic.
7.They drive these mammals into a cove by setting up boats in a line and banging on metal rods to direct the dolphins into the cove where they set up nets and start selecting the dolphins for capativy in sea shows across the world (ie: Sea world, Mirage in Vegas, West Edmonton mall) They die within 5 years of capitivty said to commit suicide.
We supply the demand for these creature and essentially allow these slaughter to keep happening.
8.The dolphins that are not selecting are brutally stabbing, cut open and left to bleed out, new born dolphins are also killed.
9. Dolphins are self aware, They Know what is happening to there young, they understand that they are trapped and the worst is yet to come.
10. The human race is digusting, we allow this to happen and do nothing about it. We are sheltered from the current events happening around this world. This is our future, our childrens future.
They predict in 40 years we will have no ocean life. Extiction is happening everywhere and who is to blame? We are. Because we can walk on land and swim in water it gives us the right to do what we please? Grow up people. Open your eyes.
