George Carlin dies at 71

June 23rd, 2008 // 135 Comments

Sad news this morning. It’s been reported that legendary comedian and cantankerous badass George Carlin passed away yesterday at the age of 71, according to People:

The stand-up comic and author – best known for his groundbreaking routine “Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television” – reportedly died of heart failure at Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica. (Carlin, who was open about his long struggle with drugs and alcohol, had a history of heart problems, including a previous heart attack.)

George Carlin was always awesome to me because he had a hilarious way of seeing through the everyday bullshit. The world just got a whole lot less funny and a little less brutally honest. Rest in Peace, George. You’ll be missed.

    @96
All your credability went to shit when you wrote in Al Gore.
But not all is lost, just write him in on this years ticket, it will probably mean more this time than it did last time.
Carbon credits – what a joke and sure road to more government that is overbloated already.
It is useless to complain when the system fails to benefit your cause when your only answer is “lets change it”.
Like your 20/20 hindsight is bringing some sort of brilliant new ideas to the table.
This government has outlived its own life span…

Watch what people are cynical about, and one can often discover what they lack.

    @91

Oh wait, I just got it, you think Im black right?
    Nah, I’m a drunk Irish.
Come up and play, we’re reeeeal nice to y’all rednecks!

  3. One thing I notice with everyone posting on here is that they blame a president for everything. The president isnt the sole person in control of everything. The congress, house and senate have as much to do with everything as the president does. Thats one of the worst things about the current situation…congress isnt being held accountable and all you “internet political geniuses” use the president as a scape goat. SO what does that mean?…It means most of these flakey, numb nuts that helped us get in the positions we are in, will stay in office making them worse.

@96…prices have fluxuated up and down, so yes, some will go back down and probably in the near future, oil and gas being 2.

Circumstances out of our control have led us to where we are nationally and internationally, so I wouldnt say its fair or remotely convenient to compare this presidency to any other.

Al Gore?…hmm..you lost me there. That guy is as big a hypocrite as Barack Osama, if not worse.

@95…I didnt hate carlin, just didnt think anything he did after 1980 was funny.

@99…passyunk?..Is that the same place we called pussypunk when I lived in Philly in the 80s? Judging by ALL your previous comments, Id say so. Thanks for the invite, but I’ll pass. Good to see a liberal that does think violence is the answer to some problems though. Checkmate, BITCH!

  4. George W. Bush

Will you faggots stop arguing about me and get back to weeping about a crusty old man’s death?

  5. bootlips

It was always funny seeing an old, cranky, druggie, alcoholic, comedian, mocking others.

  6. Can’t a dead guy rest in peace?

Follow my 2 commandments (make that 3) and
    SHUT THE F…… UP ALREADY!

  7. Read Enough - to puke

    Patton ?
    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA …………………
Credibility ? Your great-grandfather was an Huguenot ‘immigrant ‘…(there’s that damn word again – strike one) Which was a new religion. (albeit not Scientology – strike two)
BTW. How did that whole “Japan invading Mexico to get to Cal.” thing work out for you ? Didn’t you think they would have just invaded Cal. instead ?
Again Scientology and L. Ron Hubbard comes to mind. He attacked what he believed to be two enemy submarines, ten miles off the coast of Oregon. The “battle” took two days. There was never any evidence of a submarine and other Commanders didn’t think a submarine was ever in the area
People who live in glass houses and all that. …….. strike 3

    I guess you told “ME”

But back to what REALLY matters – a mans life ended lastnight, and all you can do is spew political rhetoric and chastise me.
Hmm … your priorities are in the right place after all. It’s good to see fascism lives

Long Live George Carlin in Memory

Gone is another person to be brutally honest in explaining the world. Here to stay is a bunch of pussy-ass Americans and Europeans trying to shield their pathetic little kids from the realities of the world by elongating names for diseases, putting pads on every goddamned thing in sight and structuring the children so much that kids don’t even have time to plan their revenge on their fat-assed parents for fucking them up so much. At least George told it like it was and classified this country as what it is, a big fucking shopping mall with fat kids, fat parents and fat fucking SUVs to put stupid shit they will never need and will probably hate the minute they get home. So heres to you George. Maybe the rest of America and Europe will wake the fuck up before the fat fucks sink into the ocean.

  9. Ex sheep fucker (I'm alergic to wool)

George wouldn’t want to be “blessed” by a God he didn’t believe in, so I guess I’ll have to raise a toast to his memory and hope he becomes good worm chow. So long, and thanks for calling it as you saw it.

  10. talula

    #62, well said.

  11. tmhs

Re: Mike Oxfucker, Argh, it looks like the dickfucks from Freerepublic have started posting here. YOU people are the reason why other countries hate us and yes, George Carlin hated the tampax tools like yourself. Get the fuck out of here. You make me sick. YOU are the unAmerican ones. Why don’t you go and form your own country somewhere, preferebly on another planet so you no longer have to pollute the earth with your rancid fecal matter. Your fat fucking asses are ruining everything that is good about the U.S. Nazi Germany is more appropriate for your type of thinking, if you call it that.

  14. Binky

“And this just in in sports. A partial score….
    6…

    RIP George.

  15. northharvard

wow, you guys are a bunch of dickheads. the last thing george carlin would want is a bunch of douchebags arguing about some garbage politics in a comment board about his death. So George, you’re the man and comedy is officially dead without you and Richard Pryor. Rest In Peace buddy. The rest of you, go suck a fat dick, bunch of faggots.

  18. Mollie Starr

Who only pays 8% in taxes? Shit, I pay out 25%, work for the government, and am under the poverty line.

George is the best. I say “is” because his audio books will forever live on in my hard drive. <3 Hearing George spit social and political commentary at me is extremely soothing for my soul. I feel like he understood me. He must have been my grandfather.

  19. Wherever he is now, I hope he is happy. Thanks George for the many years of laughs.

  20. #2FAN

I would say rest in peace but if I know Carlin…he never does anything in peace. I love ya man.

    @33 I totally agree.

If somebody doesn’t start monitoring these boards, this site will eventually disappear when frustrated readers are confronted with asinine trolling spammers like Mike O. This is an obit article and pontificating about your love for all things conservative and superstitious is not appropriate. Now that you’ve received the attention you so crave, you will probably not stop until somebody bans your IP address from posting.

Please, somebody needs to moderate these boards.

    RIP George

  25. Randal

A truly discouraging event in his career, I think George Carlin still looks great for his age even though he’s dead. He will have a historic comeback as the made for television producers race to tell his story. I, for one, believe Carlin can overcome this setback and return to his position at the top, where he so rightly belongs.

Don’t worry, George. We still believe in you. Keep fighting the good fight, old champ!

  26. Sam Kinison

Alright, little buddy. We didn’t think it would happen so soon, but we’ve been waiting for you up here in Heaven. Everything is all cool now. Get yourself a nice drink. Have yourself a seat and relax while I REMIND YOU FOR ALL ETERNITY WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO HAVE ME KICKING YOUR ASS!!!!!

  28. Deacon Jones

    @124

Speaking of banning an IP address, where’s Barely Stern been?? Booted?

  29. This guy was beyond GREAT. Was of the best comedians of all time. He really knew what was going on in the world/government and wasn’t afraid of talking about it publicly.

  30. erin

the world will not be the same without you, george carlin. rest in peace.

  31. Jean Smith

George Carlin was undoubtedly one of the best comedians of our century and his comic spirit will surely live on forever…

    We miss you George!

I actually came across a really cool website doing a tribute on George— you can listen to ten of his funniest comedy bits for free if you go to Lexy.com and click on the George Carlin tribute link. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

  32. RufusTFirefly

I just heard Carlin’s 10 Commandments riff on the lexy.com service mentioned above. Hysterical beyond belief. 7 words, airport security — the man offered a much needed perspective on our world.

    Indeed, RIP George.

  33. michael

Wow..I never imagined I’d see him die at that age. He always seemed to full of life. And logic, reason, honesty, humor and authority.

    Rest in peace, trooper.

  34. douchebag Mcgee

I think I speak for everyone, when I say
    ahem
    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
    HOLY MOTHER OF FUCK NUGGETS
Some one call in my Royal Necromancer, ON THE FLY DAMNIT.
    But in all seriousness,
    I agree.
