One of the main characters in the FOX teen soap “The O.C.” won’t survive tonight’s season finale and Mischa Barton says it’s her alter-ego Marissa Cooper.
“It’s true, it’s true. My character dies,” Barton reportedly told “Access Hollywood” for a report set to air tonight. “I think the show is moving in a new direction. This was a great opportunity for everyone. I was just really excited about giving everybody a good finale.”
According to TVGuide.com the 20-year-old actress has expressed interest in breaking away from television to focus on a film career. The Web site says that “The O.C.,” which has been struggling in the ratings, will return for its fourth season without its resident booze-and-dope-addled, bed-hopping drama queen.
“We’ve had three great years,” Barton said, according to the Web site TeenHollywood.com. “And my character has been through so, so much and there’s really nothing more left for her to do.”
The show has been running promos all week promising that a main character will die tonight and E! Online reports that producers went to great lengths to keep both fans and insiders in the dark.
Writers had omitted tell-tale passages from the script and several different endings were shot. One of the multiple endings reportedly shows Barton’s character succumbing to a drug overdose. Another scenario involves Peter Gallagher’s character Sandy Cohen.
But even if Marissa somehow survives tonight’s edge-of-your-seat finale, network sources divulge that the waifish actress will no longer be a series regular and will only appear occasionally as a guest star.
A rep for Fox says he “can’t confirm or deny (Marissa’s death).” But do, of course, stay tuned! (“The O.C. airs at 9 tonight.)
