Anyone seen it yet? I caught a show last night and thought it was great! Really suprised to see the entire theatre packed. Plus most of the shows were sold out for the night. Anyway, just wondering who's seen it, who's going to see it and who's not :)[/i]

It's a good sci-fi movie.
Even better if you watched the Firefly series.

It looks funny. I am not obsessed like some people, and I never saw the show, but I would see it.

Yeah I never saw the show, I was dragged by my sister. I was really surprised at the quality. A lot of funny moments, bit of weird old-fashioned dialouge though but whatever haha.

I've seen it twice... once back in may when it wasn't actually finished and a few weeks ago when it premiered here or whatever. I love it. <3 And I met Joss Whedon! rock on
My brother is friends with the main character's second cousin.
That's crazy, I was about to say the same thing.
Good movie btw. 8)

The creator, Joss Whedon was aiming for a "Sci-fi western" when he made up this series.

There are some funny parts. Overall it's pretty good. You have to like sci-fi though.

Ratings were bad, and Fox doesn't hesitate in canceling shows that don't have American Idol ratings...
Holy shit this movie BOMBED. :(

I hope that doesn't mean it was bad.
Whoa, it's already in the top 250 on IMDb --- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379786/
Or maybe that's just all the Whedon geeks multiple voting :?

It didn't do so well at the Box Office. Apparently America is still fascinated by Jodie Foster running around a plane screaming.

This is good sci fi.
It's just that people want more explosions and fox cancels everything.
See, Fox is stupid... just in case you don't know.

I'm pretty interested in going to see the show. Don't spoil it for me!

I love Joss Whedon. He has an amazing knack for crazy dialogue and interesting characters. I haven't seen the movie yet but I'm sure I'll like it.
@eek: Yeah it did, 10 million is usually 3rd of 4th place in the B.O. and probably around 1/10th of the budget. :?
Mugato

It cost $40, which is cheap for any movie, especially a sci-fi one. A movie usually has to make over 150% of its cost to make a profit. It might barely squeak by with DVD sales but I wouldn't hold my breathe for a sequel.

not really. Box Office #'s have been going down as less people have been going to theatres. The only temporal measure of success you can use is comparison between competing movies, as most movies nowadays make their money back in DVD sales. And Serenity will do that in a jiffy.
Saying it "bombed" is excessive. It didn't "bomb." It's doing alright.
You do have a point by comparing it to how terrible movies have done this year, but last year or pretty much all of the past 15 years have done better. Last week in particular was 25% higher last year, and last year was also a decline. AND the year before that.
EVERY movie makes a profit, DVD or not. Sci-Fi films usually place first at the BO. Comparing it on that scale it's completely pathetic (other than, say, Equilibrium)
Luckily the budget wasn't too high, though, or else he would've lost all hope for a sequel. And I'm sure DVD sales will be very high.
Saying it bombed could be an exaggeration but it's not that far off.
@Mugato: Yeah, but IMDb doesn't include marketing budget. That's probably another 5-10 mil on top of that 40.

I'm not really a sci-fi or fantasy person. I've never even heard of Firefly until this movie came out. I went to see Serenity since I heard good things. I didn't really like it. I think it had a cheap feel or something.

Saw it last night. Was pretty good.
They should have included characters like these in the 3 star wars prequels.

I thought it was a great movie. I wasn't much into the TV show when it was first on but I started watching it on the SciFi channel when I saw that they were putting out a movie (Thanks, Tivo!) It was a very original and fun TV show.

Saw it on Sunday - loved it!!! It's currently number 1 in the UK. I think it'll do better over here then in the USA!!!
I'm sad that it didn't do so well at the box office - it's a pretty good movie.

***SPOILER WARNING***
(Scroll down.)
I thought it was totally unnecessary for Wash to die. Wash was one of my favorite characters, and his relationship with Zoe was one of the main anchors of the crew's dynamic. Seriously, what was the point here?
MattDante
10-17-2005, 07:29 PM
Yeah, I was upset with how Wash's death was done. I think that it was completely unnecessary to the story, as it did not really affect Zoe as it probably would have if the show was still on the air and had time to deal with it.
He was the best. I loved his introduction in the Pilot episode where he's playing with his dinosaurs on the flight console. Classic stuff.

EVERY movie makes a profit, DVD or not.
I have to disagree with that, unless I misunderstood your post. Every movie does NOT necessarally make a profit.
@Mugato: Yeah, but IMDb doesn't include marketing budget. That's probably another 5-10 mil on top of that 40.
That's why I said that a movie has to make back its budget plus another half of its budget at least to make a profit. That covers marketing and the theater's take. That's a general rule of thumb but it's probably conservative, since Serenity was a relatively cheap movie to make and there was a lot of marketing for it.
I really hope it does well enough in the forgein market and DVDs to warrant a sequel but I don't know. If I was a studio exec I wouldn't green light one at this point. Then again, I've never met a studio suit that had more than a room temperature IQ so it's all a crap shoot anyway.
^ I don't mean EVERY movie. It was a bit of an exaggeration.
And yeah, it's doing terrible out here in LA. It wasn't even at some theaters past the 2nd week. :(

That's a damn shame.
I felt that it truly was a movie for the fans, though. I don't see how non-Firefly fans could really relate to it without watching the series first to understand everything and get a feel for all the characters.

In my opinion, fans of the show would get more out of it, but general SF fans will enjoy it as well. It's simply a very good film in its own right.

I loved it and had no idea about Firefly at all. I only knew that it was a TV series that was shortlived. And that it was our competitor at the Emmy's a few years ago.

I think the reason this film probably hasn't done well is cause the fans of the show r in a minority. Remember Firefly only ran 4 15 episodes! According to the post's here the film hasn't recieved wide distribution in the US well the same in the UK here.
Its only been released in a couple of cities here and then in only a few cinema's - hopefully it will do well enuf on DVD so that we can have a sequel to it.
About less people going to the cinema. It's the same here in the UK, ticket sales are down. I was watching Film 2005 with Jonathon Ross and they did a two parter on this very same issue.
Alot of people contributed wot was mentioned was things like:
Expensive tickets - here tickets cost on average £8.00 a movie thats way too much!
Movies also come out like 3 months after they r released on DVD. Alot of people are w8tg for DVD's to come out. It's cheaper for them to rent then c the film.
More and more people have home cinemas and flat screens - a tiny minority true but nevertheless a growing one. Flat screens are getting more and more cheaper by the year! Soon most people will have one. U can get a cinema experience @home now.
But many talked of the quality of the films which brings me back to Serenity. This film is gr8t so y has it not recieved that much publicity, hype or wide distribution? A film like this deserves much more attention from the media in general.
They also talked about how studios shouldn't just rely on stars 2 guarentee box office. The Cinderella Man with Russell Crowe; Mr & Mrs Smith with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie bombed!! Yet the studios were convinced that these films were going2 to lite the box office alite - it didn't happen!!!
Also the movies themselves are getting worse. Why? The writing. Alot of the people talked of the scripts and plots not making any sense. Thats y people r voting with their feet now.
I KNOW THIS IS SLIGHTLY GOING OF THE TOPIC - BUT THERE U GO!!!
