View Full Version : The 80's Teen Movie Thread
Since I did an Ode to "The Last American Virgin" thread yesterday, I figured we needed an 80's teen movie thread:
The beauty of the teen movies in the '80's was that they always featured a common theme - unpopular outcast guy ends up with a girl he had no business being with in the end. In between, there was always the requisite party scene where the house gets trashed, the adolescent sexual hijinx, a poor little rich kid, and there was usually some kind of moral message that elevated the film above the mindless drivel that it might have become otherwise.
Here are my 10 favorite teen flicks from the '80's, in no particular order:
Fast Times at Ridgemont High - An all time classic. Many famous '80's actors got their start in this one, such as Anthony Edwards, Eric Stoltz and Nicholas Cage. And the Phoebe Cates-red bikini scene may well have been the defining moment of '80's pop culture.
Better Off Dead - Just when you thought Diane Franklin couldn't get any hotter, she comes back as a French exchange student. This is one of the most quotable movies of the '80's.
The Breakfast Club - The best of John Hughes' considerable repetoire.
Sixteen Candles - Anthony Michael Hall became a legend to nerds everywhere in this one.
Risky Business - The movie that put Tom Cruise on the map.
Just One of the Guys - "All balls itch! It's a fact!"
Can't Buy Me Love - Patrick Dempsey is the male version of Diane Franklin. It seems like he was in every teen movie made in the '80's.
Porky's - Another all time classic. What adolescent boy could ever forget that shower scene?
Valley Girl - Most people have forgotten about this one. But any movie that features the song "I Melt With You" has to have a place on this list.
EDIT: I can't believe I forgot Revenge of the Nerds. I should be shot.
OK, discuss...

Ferris Beuller?? 80s???
Another classic.
"In 1930, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, in an effort to alleviate the effects of the... Anyone? Anyone?... the Great Depression, passed the... Anyone? Anyone? The tariff bill? The Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act? Which, anyone? Raised or lowered?... raised tariffs, in an effort to collect more revenue for the federal government. Did it work? Anyone? Anyone know the effects? It did not work, and the United States sank deeper into the Great Depression. Today we have a similar debate over this. Anyone know what this is? Class? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone seen this before? The Laffer Curve. Anyone know what this says? It says that at this point on the revenue curve, you will get exactly the same amount of revenue as at this point. This is very controversial. Does anyone know what Vice President Bush called this in 1980? Anyone? Something-d-o-o economics. "Voodoo" economics. "

she looked much better in Dirty Dancing...
THE SCENE WHERE EMILIO ESTEVEZ GETS HIGH IN THE BREAKFEST CLUB IS ONE OF THE MOST EMBARASSING MOMENTS OF ALL TIME.
The pinnacle of lame 1980's miscalculated youth re-enactments.
I liked the rest of the movie, though. 8)

This subject is my speciality. 80's movies makes up for a large portion of my DVD collection (besides Disney, Indie flicks and Pooorn). The ones that have been mentioned are all wonderful (especially Heathers, although it *almost* doesn't qualify as an 80's movie, but it was from 89 so it counts!).
Couple of others that were missed- One Crazy Summer. Hello! Better Off Dead's bastard cousin, still funny as hell. Demi Moore before her GI Jane days!
Teen Wolf: I listen to this soundtrack. Regularly.
Once Bitten: How I first fell in love with Jim Carrey.

Did anynoe mention About Last Night w/Demi Moore & Rob Lowe - Jim Belushi
Dear GOD, I've seen it a couplel hundred x at least. We had a group of 10 friends that would party every weekend, and every one of those nights everyone came to my place to drink and as soon as we got there someone would yell out, "Hey, throw in THE movie!" never got sick of it. to this day. Very good times those were. . .

My two favorite 1980s teen movies. (I hate Nick Cannon for his lame remake of Can't Buy Me Love. That guy wouldn't know a good project if it bit him on the ass.) "Fast Times" had its moments, but overall it just didn't do it for me for some reason.

some kind of wonderful, which was kind of like a reverse pretty in pink. the dreamgirl wasnt that goody, and he ended up with the best friend.
Pretty in Pink is my all time favourite 80s movie. I cringe everytime the scene comes on where blane and andie are going on their date and he asks her if she wants to go home and change first, and she says she already did...ouch.

There are only 2 things wrong w/those 80s Molly Ringwald movies:
1)Jake Ryan doesn't really exist. I've looked, I tried, he just doesn't exist & that suck-didly-ucks.
2)SHE SHOULD'VE PICKED DUCKIE DAMMIT!!
Most of these movies you've listed are the movies of my teen years & I love them one & all.
Glad to know that someone else has seen & appreciates Last American Virgin. Unfortunately it got lumped in w/all those lame ass Porky's wannabes but it's so much more than that & so much better.
