I've always thought that The Doors is the best band name ever.
In fact most band names that begin with 'the' are pretty cool.
The Mothers of Invention
The Sex Pistols
The Beatles
The Cure
The Temptations
Other cool band names:
Soundgarden
Judas Priest
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Some names are just kind of silly like
Radiohead
Fountains of Wayne
Any band named after some geography as in
Boston
America
Kansas
Don't get me started on the juvinille rap names
Help me out here, What makes a good band name
and what makes a bad one.
You don't have to like or hate the band,
just the name.

So your music is Gray?
Not a glowing endorsement.
I think the stupidest names came out of the 60's. Names like "Vanilla Fudge", "Strawberry Alarm Clock" and "1910 Fruit Gum Company".
"1910 Fruit gum Company"?! WTF?

yeah, and the beatles sound like beetles.
if you truly didn't understand, then i meant the band name is irrelevant. most band names sound stupid. if the band is good though, the name takes on a new meaning and then becomes commonplace as the band establishes itself. most of the bands you quoted with good names sound pretty stupid if you take them away from there association.

The most stupid name for a band is:
The Electric Light Orchestra.
It's too long to be catchy. And it doesn't even make fucking sense, I mean an orchestra isn't composed of electric lights for Christ's sake. It's a fucking ridiculous name, IMHO.

When I was younger, I thought the coolest band name ever was "I Mother Earth". There was almost something majestic about it.
However, I have to say the best band name, in my humble opinion, would have to be "nine inch nails".
On top of the imagery and implication in connotes, the name works on many levels.
The acronym, being nin, doubles as the first three letters of nine. The logo - a squared in nin with the second "n" being mirrored - is simple, stylistic and looks cool.
Considering nine inch nails was one of the first bands that pushed the "industrial" genre into the forefront of the public eye, it works that the band name invokes a very gritty imagery of industrial construction.

New Order
Joy Division
Interpol
REM
A Tribe Called Quest
Rage Against the Machine
Suicidal Tendencies
Depeche Mode
Peter, Paul & Mary

The bad - any new band that adds the word 'the'
the good -
Stray Cats - they had the runaway/badass image to back up the name.
U2 - except it goes against rule #8(no political reference)
Queen was pretty cool except it sounded like they were a bunch of guys in drag when I first heard of them
REALLY REALLY BIG MAN!

09-16-2005, 10:25 PM
I'd disagree with alot of these.
Anything with "the" in it instantly sucks if you ask me, sounds dumb. Can't beleive someone was ragging on Electric light orchestra, (FYI they went by ELO most of the time).
Some of the best names in my opinion:
Motley Crue, this one fits in a literal meaning plus the incorrect spelling was actually cool for a change. I've been in bands my whole life and everyone always wants to spell one word in the name wrong and i always h ated it. It's cheezy but in this case it works.
Poison
RattAgain, spelled wrong but still cool
Grand Funk Railroad
Iron butterfly
Just a few off the top of my head.
Worst ones, man this is a LONG list.
Linkin park, limp bizquick, Barenaked ladies, Culture club, Prince and the revolution, saigon kick, Pearl jam, Nirvana, Guns n Roses, LA guns, Guiffria, Stryper, Velvet Revolver (this ones stupid as hell), and it goes on and on and on.
Worst ones are the 80's heavy metal bands though. Metallica, ugh terrible name. Anything with "metal" in it sucks. Megadeth, better than metallica but still lame. Pantera. etc.
Personally I kinda like some of those messed up 60's names, just because they are so original.
But honestly like someone else said, the name can be stupid but if the band is good it makes the name less stupid.
Unorganized Crime. Cool name.

I like band names that begin with the "definite article"
Punk, spawned a lot names that were fairly funny, where they take a familiar word, and break it up with an "and the", eg "oxy and the morons"

The Dead Kennedys
Alice in Chains (I really like the name Alice and they always turn out to be interesting people)
R.E.M./REM
Bad Brains
The Sex Pistols
The Deftones
Gorillaz
Jefferson Airplane
L7
Led Zeppelin
Mindless Self Indulgence
The Pixies
Nine Inch Nails
Placebo
Red Hot Chili Peppers

Vertical Horizon
The Cure
Garbage
Jethro Tull
Trippin' Daisy
Air
White Zombie
The Grateful Dead
The Roots
The Fugees
Pink Floyd
The Cure
Soundgarden
Sonic Youth
I don't like:
The Cardigans
Metallica
Blink 182
Blue Oyster Cult
Nirvana
Dinosaur Jr.
CKY
Coldplay
Death Cab For Cutie
The Postal Service
The Killers
La Oreja de Van Gogh
Pantera
Queen
Tears for Fears
The Smashing Pumpkins
The Smiths
Weezer
Bush
Cake
Counting Crows
Dave Matthews Band
Hed Pe
Incubus
Kittie
Travis
The Foo Fighters
The Beach Boys
Queens of the Stoneage
This reflects nothing back on the artists themselves. Some of them under the names I don't like still definately rocked my socks--just could have been better.

fyi about fountains of wayne - it's the name of a fountain store by me in a town called, you guessed it, wayne. It's definitly the most pathetic name ever especially after you visit the store, which is run down and not all that exciting.

I ALWAYS LIKED:
"Souls of Mischeif" - fierce
"Sublime" - how cool is that
"Nine Inch Nails" - pretty hardcore
"The Cure" - has meaning
"Prodigy"
"The Cars"
"Creedence Clearwater Revival"
"Led Zeppelin" - cool thing to name a band after
"Greatful Dead" - also cool when just "The Dead"
"Depeche Mode" - just sounds nice and interesting
"The Police" -
"System of a Down"
"The Verve"
"The Talking Heads" - quirky
"Queen" - kind of demands respect
"The Band" - cool just because
"U2" - simple and cool
"The Offspring"
"Junior Senior" - kind of weird but somehow cool
"Stereolab"
I NEVER LIKED:
"The Wallflowers" - sounds nerdy
"Staind" - don't like the spelling
"Korn" - yeah, the spelling again
"Guns n' Roses" - not sure why, I think I don't like the "n'"
"Duran Duran" - sounds weird, why is it repeated?
"The Goo Goo Dolls" - sounds too young
"3 Doors Down" - just don't think it's appropriate for a band name
"4 Non Blondes" - seems like they could try harder
"Smashing Pumpkins" - sounds foolish

WOW! My brother loved them and he would always try to justify their music to me (we were raised born again christian) and it always seemed so freakin lame. There was one song that I did like (I think it was their most popular but I can't remember) and I absolutely hated all the rest.
The peyote jam theory behind the Name Pearl Jam is a very popular one, and what the band claims it is. However a lot of people think that it is a joke, and it actually refers to the not-often used euphamism for semen.
Some other good ones that may have been mentioned in this thread:

I think a couple of Neil Young band names were pretty good
Crazyhorse
Stray Gators
not to mention CSNY, the letters just go together so well.
W3RD to wildflower for
The Band
Love the name, love the band (ha ha ha, the puns are endless)
Is it weird that I like
Red Hot Chili Peppers as a name? Its just fits them so well...
Stop hating on Barenaked Ladies. BNL. Brilliant. Got more people to their shows early on.
April Wine is a great name too, good call jethro.
Rolling Stones (epic name for an epic band)
Hootie and the Blowfish (its so nice to say)
Milli Vanilli (probably only because of the In Living Colour skit)
Tenacious D (gotta love sports references)
some bad names
any modern bands that mispell words to be more "street"
Limp Bizkit the main Kulprit
Kid Rock .... so dumb, unless thats his actual name which would be rather sad
Guerilla-Unit
I've probably wiped mosto ther bad names out of mym memory so thats it for now.

One of the best names I ever heard for a band was "JFKFC".
If any other singers/rappers start their name with 'Lil, I'm going to have to kill someone.
Exactly. I went to school with a guy who called himself "Lil Scoop", what a tool!

I will join the endless agreement that The Cure is a good name....and a great band. I grew up with them, forgot about them for most of the 90's then rediscovered them once I started finding all the bootlegs on the net.....so good.
Other good band names......
Parliment/Funkadelic
Circle Jerks
Rush
Ditry Rotten Imbicles
Yes
The Clash
Bad names.......
Kajagoogoo
Dixie Midnight Runners
Bones Thugs and Harmonies

Most bands named after places suck:
Boston
Asia
Europe
America
Nazareth
Alabama...do I need to go on? I can only think of 1 or 2 exceptions.
I didn't read most of this thread, but I will subscribe to The Cure being a really good band name, if not one of the best ever.
And I'm a bit partial on this one, since I love them so much, but I've always loved Steely Dan as band name. You gotta love a band that's named after a dildo. Plus, it's really funny to ask people if they like Steely Dan, and they say: "I love him!"

Stryper is the worst band name ever. Oh and the worst band. See sometimes it DOES go hand in hand.
I saw Stryper in concert. Twice.
I'm sorry...Actually, I've seen Warrant about three times, so I can't really tease. Warrant is a crappy band name to me.
I used to look through my Dad's records a lot and I remember coming across SAVOY BROWN. I HATED that name. Those words just sound gross together. I actually never listed to the band until I was older because I hated their name so much. Def Leppard is a horrible band name. [/b]
I saw Warrant once too, with Trixter and Firehouse. Blood Sweat and Beers was such an awesome festival, not
Some of the the stupidest crappiest band names ever came from the so-called "Metal Mania" era, especially the ones that were named after the singer's last name:
Alias
Nelson
Winger
White Lion
Cold Sweat
Enuff Z'nuff
Bon Jovi
Dokken
The Cardigans is a retarded name too. Yeah that rocks, naming yourselves after a fucking sweater.

Train (ridiculous)
Fuel (dumb)
Nickelback (stupid)
Live (confusing)
Korn (kind of gross)
Mister Mister (no comment)
