DJ AM found dead

August 28th, 2009 // 311 Comments

Less than a year after narrowly surviving a fiery plane crash, DJ AM was found dead this afternoon in his New York apartment. A drug overdose is believed to be the cause. TMZ reports:

Law enforcement sources tell us he was found in his apartment at around 5:20 PM. We’re told drug paraphernalia was found at the scene.
We’re told DJ AM had not been seen or heard from for a few days — one of his friends went to check on him, but got no response after knocking on his apartment door.
We’re told the friend called the police, who broke down the door and then found DJ AM’s body.

Way to make the most of a second chance at life. Well played.

I just can’t feel bad for druggies. Hope it was worth it, dude.

  2. Bob Barker

Yah, I gotta’ agree w/ the what the 2nd (or 3rd) commenter says: someone died. Do not post bullshit like that. Have some respect for him. He was a human being being–w/ a family, and people that loved him. So, just don’t do things like that.

  3. Petah

Damn, yet Lindsey lives!? Why does this nice guy have to do something stupid and die as a result? PLEASE PLEASE LiLo be next!! or how about Spidey!? Preferable both!!! YIPEEE!!! Next time I hear of a celebrity death, PLEASE let it be LiLo or / and Spidey!!!

  4. Well I wouldn’t stop following The Superficial because of that comment, though I do think it’s a little harsh. We don’t know what kind of pain medications he might have been on because of the crash (and may have still been taking/have become addicted to), and we don’t know what kind of mental trauma he may have been suffering because of the event. Still, I have to agree, it’s no reason to kill oneself, should this be (as it looks) suicide.
I’ll still miss his fun mixtapes with Travis.

    @48

That’s irrelevant. Au contraire to the comment from ShameOnYou, drug addiction is very simple. You start doing drugs, get addicted, and inevitably die from them, all while being a liability to everyone around you. There is nothing more pathetic than that. The fact that there are many people addicted to drugs just shows that a lot of people are very stupid, but, that’s not news.

  6. Kat

i read the Superficial because of the distasteful comments! i’m not a fan of dj am but if hard drugs was the cause of his death, then he simply got what was coming. if it isn’t, then too bad, so sad, another DJ will take his place. thanks for the memories!

  7. Bexx

no, you know what? it was well played. jack ass overdosed.. and everyone is whining and moaning.. @ how sad it was? WTF?! people – he skipped out on death from a plane crash…. gets a second chance @ life.. and then does this. I don’t care if it was RX or if it was crack and heroin.

at least someone had the balls to call him on it and say well played.

  8. Grim Reaper

And thus I do claim another talentless hack.

Thanks for the props Fish, you’ll last through the decade.

    i guess nicole r. dodged a bullet……such is life……..

“Way to make the most of a second chance at life. Well played.”

    That last line is AWESOME!

  13. don't care if u don't like this comment

the dude has children … enough said. his death may not be tragic to you personally but i’m sure it will be to his family. personal opinions aside, feel bad for them…

  14. DJ PM

    I am triumphant!!!

  15. BNAL

And thats is why the drugs should not be legalized… how many people has to die to realize that it is necesary to promote a healthy life style?… not everyone is so “mentally strong” to consume drugs (like brad pitt or megan fox) and not to become into a suicide drug addict, remember that stuff alters your mind in a unique way, not because your friend happens to be just fine means that you will be ok too… I don´t know if I explain myself…sorry for my english… :(

  16. Humpinfrog

Hey! E. Kennedy did it and lasted way longer with his second chance. Mary Jo, not so much. Man up DJAM! You pissed away a chance, most of us will never get.

  17. renee

sorry that last comment came about 3x………lol

  18. Rob

“Way to make the most of a second chance at life. Well played.”

that comment just ended my browsing of the superficial. Well played. You are disgusting.

    x2

that was not well played on the superficial writer’s part. very classy,

  19. renee

my guess is that “steve-o”is next in line………yes? no? who could argue that? LOL…..

  20. moka

i think people should live life like they want to. if he survived an accident, that doesn’t mean he had a “SECOND CHANCE”. at least he died doing what he enjoyed doing. overdose is also an accident, or maybe he just didn’t wanted to live, who knows? death is death, regardless of the circumstances and, this is very sad.

the irony and amazingness lies simply in the complexity of the circumstances: an airplane crash vs OD with very little difference of time in between.

i guess this person was unfortunate not because he died, we all die, but because he had a problem with addiction, that’s the sad thing.

i will continue reading the superficial because i never take it seriously, never. this website is no BBC, even those enterprises have said stupid things once, i’m sure, and?

you may find an analogy of this case with many others. the movie final destination comes to mind.

condolences to the relatives and the musical scene.

  21. renee

hey ROB……….have a sense of humor and dont take everything you read to heart ya goob

  22. ON

lol @ everyone with bunched panties. Dying of a drug OD is “not classy”, however you want to spin it.

  23. Relax

ya i’m sure the emotional well-being of his children was his number one priority when surrounding himself with drug paraphenalia. the appropriate amount of time to dwell on this story is to read the headline, take a second, maybe mutter under your breath “sucks”- if you’re a fan. yes, obviously his friends and family are going to be extremely effected by this, but you’re not his friends or family. the website is called the superficial, let’s not be contradictory with the tears and sniffles.

  24. Fried Vagina

That last line was so superficial. All the whiny crybabies that don’t like it will still be reading tomorrow. Don’t change a thing, Fishman … the internet needs folks like you to put crap like this in perspective.

  25. sad

Look I used to have ZERO sympathy for addicts, my father was one and so I never touched alcohol drugs cigarettes anything, they all destroy your body, but if you want to judge DJam then you better be in the18-20 BMI range, have zero debt, never smoke, never drink to excess never do drugs and never do ANY risky dumbass things. VERY few people fall into that category.

I was healthy my whole life had an olympic level 18 BMI exercised two hours a day never touched drugs/alcohol/cigarettes ate all natural food, lived smart simple and clean and in my early twenties got seriously sick in a way that I had zero control over and when I went to the hospital and saw all the people who put themselves there while I and many kids and adults who lived smart were sick and dying through no fault of their own I felt infuriated.

Then I realised that it’s even harder for them becuase they are their own worst enemy, people often have no pity for them, but addiction is genetic and they didn’t choose to be addicts, yes they have some control over their actions, but the majority of people who are addicts never overcome them which means it must be quite a hellish nightmare, My father drank himself to death and I now have more compassion for people like him. Truthfully I’d rather be sick the way I am even if I may never get better than be sick and dying as an addict I just finally realized that being an addict really must be hell on earth you are your own worst enemy you are destroying yourself and people blame you because they think you can control it. If it was so easy to control people would never be addicts to begin with and people would be able to overcome it, but sadly with more and more people seem to end up this way. He was once obese so I think he really just traded one addiction for another.

I feel sad for him and for his family, it’s easy to be judge, but when you can’t manage to quit something that’s killing you that’s gotta suck. But none of you know what I’m talking about because your all super lean clean living folks right???

If you think it’s so easy to quit drugs then why are you still overweight? Why haven’t you finished school or suceeded in your career? Why do you smoke? Why can’t you stop drinking? Why can’t you stop spending yourself into debt? Why can’t you stop having unprotected sex? Why do you drive recklessly? The list goes on. Very few people are vice free, if you are that’s awesome, thanks for making the world a better place, if not have the decency to admit it and find a little compassion no one knows how they will go and if yo’\ll go in an embarassing shameful way.

  26. America

I still don’t know who this guy is.

  27. renee

hey sad……….thanks for the speech………u feel better? yes? then u got what u wanted and so did dj……….what comes around goes around……

  28. vjmw

wah. this classy guy is the one who sued the deceased pilots’ FAMILIES for pain and suffering of the plane crash he SURVIVED. i say karma is a bitch. the comment is fine and you’re all whiny babies.

  29. liz

He died. Yes, RIP. However, he put this on himself. Whether it was suicide or drug overdose. He should have appreciated his life after the plane crash… but look what he has done now. No turning back. Whether it’s his 3rd chance or 10th, he’s had one too many, obviously.

If he has family/friends that he loves and loves him back, why would he put himself on the line for death? The PLANE CRASH was a HUGE wake up call, was it not? It made Travis and his family look at life a whooooooole new way. Life didn’t mean much to him I guess…

  30. James S.

Wow. I’ve never read so many heartless comments in one thread. Maybe you should all barely survive a plane crash that kills four of your friends, and then see how easy it is for you to recover. Easy to sit here and talk sanctimonious shit when you’re behind the anonymity of a computer; you’d have a harder time pushing this bullshit to someone face-to-face.

    You lost another reader, Superficial.

  31. thatbird

Simply because drug paraphernalia was found doesn’t mean it was a drug overdose.

Cause of death at this point is unknown.

People die from natural causes at 36 too. At least wait for post mortem results before shooting off at the mouth.

Way too low under the belt until facts are released. Cold.

  32. susan

So sad for the families who called this young guy dad, brother, son, uncle, cousin…. whatever…. but the guy died with drug paraphenalia around him. So the fans or the general public who have no emotional connection to him can easily say he was insane for messing with his life with potentially life threatening drugs and should feel free to call him an idiot. Distasteful…. yes…..truthful…. absolutely.

  34. Garbo

Retract the statement if it turns out later on that he didn’t die of a self inflicted drug overdose.

    Otherwise, it’s completely appropriate.

I’m glad #4 and #15 have taken it upon themselves to not remove themselves because no one wants to read what emo fuckwits have to say.

  35. huh

    Bag…of…douche

  36. renee

    life’s a bitch…..then u deal w/it…guess he took the wrong path

  37. susan

sorry…. did it twice. But did forget to mention he won’t be able to sue the airlines now…..damn… no mo’ money for drugs.

  38. renee

it is what it is and u all know it………dont pretend its not……

  39. Daffy

Ah Renee you’re fat aren’t you??? Don’t worry you keep judging him as you pack on the pounds and develop medical problems. How on earth does what goes around comes around apply to sad, by all accounts from what they said they lived a great life and despite their hardships have compassion for others when most would jsut pity themselves. I highly doubt you live a clean vice free life so shut it and don’t ever assume you won’t end up with such a sad end.

  40. Ella

Ok, it’s sad to know the man died and all, but what a fucking MORON. He survives a plane crash and gets a second chance at life, right? So what does he do? He pisses it away on drugs. Has a better life than 80% of the country and obviously couldn’t appreciate how FORTUNATE he was.

But nonetheless, my sincere condolences to his family. :(

  41. Mel

Wondering why you’re not getting anywhere better with your writing SW? Posts like this just might be the answer you’re looking for.

  42. Josh

That last line is harsh. Superficial writer has turned into a cunt in the last month or two. Didn’t they get divorced or something (LOL FAGGOT)

  43. Ella

I just want to add, for those who are all of a sudden pissed at the authors supposed “insensitivity”, where the fuck were you when MJ died?

  44. twzzlrgirl

I have to say….the world is filled with people who either step up to the plate and make something of themselves or who are ultimately pulled down by life and can’t come to grips with anything. People have survived WAY worse than a plane crash and have done amazing things with their lives. Why he couldn’t pull it together, we will probably never know.

A crack pipe and pills were found at the scene…even if he didn’t die from a drug overdose, he must have known he was potentially tossing his life down a toilet. What a sad waste of human life….people (especially in Hollywood) are too ready to pull all kinds of dumb shit the minute things get rough.

  45. opinion

People should speak how they feel. No reason to retract anything.

If you want a censored opinion go to that perez site. That weirdo will talk trash and retract it all day for you censored types.

  46. Nick

I am impressed that the SW had the backbone to take a reasonable and sincere position on something like this. Being killed by a self-inflicted drug overdose is a pointless and stupid way to die. Surviving that plane crash was a miracle, but to die for a preventable reason is just idiocy. As the very old Knight Templar stated, “He chose poorly.”

  47. renee

lol @ the “fat card” thats all you got?? thats what you turn to?? come on……you gotta have something better than THAT dont u? i call it like i see it…….sorry u cant handle all that…..as for a clean vice free life…….do any of us have that……..no i dont think so……..but how you put it out there tells EVERYTHING……dont take every little thing so seriously…….!!

He had been sober for 9 years. But that plane crash left him with post traumatic stress and he just broke up with his girlfriend. I dont blame the dude for turning to drugs. Some people must just have brilliant lives to not understand stuff like this.
