Dane Cook Apologizes For Aurora Shooting Joke

In my zeal to spout off about the frustrating and continuing trend in taking comedy club bits out of context and drumming them up for controversy, I never once stopped to consider that maybe Dane Cook purposefully made a joke about The Dark Knight Rises shooting knowing that’s exactly how it would play out. Because here he is almost instantly apologizing on Twitter instead of going, “Wouldn’t it be funny if like five distasteful observations just ran in here and gang-raped everybody?”

I am devastated by the recent tragedy in Colorado & did not mean to make light of what happened. I made a bad judgment call with my material last night & regret making a joke at such a sensitive time. My heart goes out to all of the families & friends of the victims.

Even more telling, Dane Cook tweeted this shortly before the ruckus although it could just be about people discovering his comedy for the first time:

I’ve got a feeling something really bad is about happen but I’m gonna stick around to see if I’m right.

Unfortunately for him, and fortunately for us, when this story broke most people, “Dane Cook told a shitty joke? How is that news?” and this whole thing ended before it even began. (I like to believe The Queen jumping out of a plane helped.) But that said, is there anything more insincere than these boilerplate condolences statements from celebrities? “My very soul is devastated as my life lays in shambles hearing the news of this awful tragedy. My constant and never-ending thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and families of the victims. You’ll be in my heart always.” *TiVos The Departed* (Yes, I hate myself for even knowing to make that reference.)
