Dane Cook Makes Aurora Shooting Joke Read More »

In my zeal to spout off about the frustrating and continuing trend in taking comedy club bits out of context and drumming them up for controversy, I never once stopped to consider that maybe Dane Cook purposefully made a joke about The Dark Knight Rises shooting knowing that’s exactly how it would play out. Because here he is almost instantly apologizing on Twitter instead of going, “Wouldn’t it be funny if like five distasteful observations just ran in here and gang-raped everybody?”

I am devastated by the recent tragedy in Colorado & did not mean to make light of what happened. I made a bad judgment call with my material last night & regret making a joke at such a sensitive time. My heart goes out to all of the families & friends of the victims.

Even more telling, Dane Cook tweeted this shortly before the ruckus although it could just be about people discovering his comedy for the first time:

I’ve got a feeling something really bad is about happen but I’m gonna stick around to see if I’m right.

Unfortunately for him, and fortunately for us, when this story broke most people, “Dane Cook told a shitty joke? How is that news?” and this whole thing ended before it even began. (I like to believe The Queen jumping out of a plane helped.) But that said, is there anything more insincere than these boilerplate condolences statements from celebrities? “My very soul is devastated as my life lays in shambles hearing the news of this awful tragedy. My constant and never-ending thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and families of the victims. You’ll be in my heart always.” *TiVos The Departed* (Yes, I hate myself for even knowing to make that reference.)

  1. Now when will he apologize for not being funny?

  2. Livinus Nwambe

    A) Dane Cook is a mildly funny comedian who I stopped listening to in my early 20s. The fratboy-humour thing stopped being appealing after a short while, and I imagine that it’s the same for a lot of people

    B) He looks fucking haggard. My guess is he engineered the controversy to re-enter the arena of relevance because he doesn’t seem to be anymore.

  3. El Jefe

He deserves even less attention than the Kardashians do.

  4. I’ll stand up for the right of a Comedian or his supporter to assume anything under any context is capable of being rendered funny or having its ironies or absurdities pointed out, if that same Comedian or his supporter will accept that a person directly effected or influenced by whatever event is discussed, has the right to punch them in the mouth. No cops, no complaints: if the joke is worth telling, it’s worth the loose teeth, right? Saying something in one place that you would not be willing to say in another to someone’s face is always and only a coward’s act, correct?

In other words, just have the balls to pay the price for your comment. And if it turns out it isn’t worth it, shut the fuck up and don’t fashion yourself as some sort of crusader for Free Speech, when you’re really nothing more than a prick looking for notoriety. You aren’t Lenny Bruce, you never will be, and throwing rocks at a hornet’s nest is not an achievement.

He should apologize to all the people who ever spent money on his “comedy” shows.

  6. Chris

Dane Cook is Best known for Not being Daniel Tosh

  7. Low Ball

Cook later apologized for not using the opportunity to also apologize for being Dane Cook.

  8. goingoing

    sorry means nothing

  9. kimmykimkim

    Pussy.

  10. Never apologize. Comedy is how some people deal with tragedy. Sure the families and friends of the victims will get pissy, but hey I think they were pissy in the first place given their current situation.

Besides most of the best humour comes from making light of shitty things. Holocaust, rape, domestic abuse, racism, Republicans etc.

Exactly! That’s why I called him a pussy. If you’re gonna offend people with your shitty comedy, stick with it and own that shit! Don’t apologize! Such a pussy!

  11. AteIsEnough

Dane Cook can eat it because he sucks, and the comments have nothing to do with it. Look, comedy is not pretty. Fact is, humor CAN make healing easier, lighten bad situations… but Cook just isn’t funny or talented enough to do that sort of thing.

  12. danecooksucks

yes but will he apologize for being a TERRIBLE COMEDIAN. look, you can have an epileptic seizure on stage — this apparently causes some people to reflex laugh, and you built a career on it, Great Job!

  13. Mike

this is what happens when that tool writes his own jokes and doesn’t steal them…

  14. The Royal Penis

I didn’t know that pussy’s could utter anything other than queef’s.

  15. Pippy Longcockings

Now when will he apologize for being a butt-ugly piece of shit who’s not funny?

  16. GhostofJokethief

The only time Dane Cook is funny is when he’s stolen a real comedians material.
