Chris Brown allegedly has a history of assaulting Rihanna. While TMZ cites the police report where Rihanna claims she’s been abused before, Us Weekly reports she had bruises on her neck as recently as December:
Brown — who is currently being investigated by Los Angeles county prosecutors after Rihanna allegedly accused him of assaulting her the night before the Grammys — always had a “volatile” relationship with the singer, an insider tells Us.
A Rihanna confidant adds that bruises were clearly visible on the singer’s neck in early December.
Alarmed, “I asked is everything was OK with her and Chris,” says the pal. “She told me, ‘We broke up again.’ I didn’t pursue the issue further.”
Meanwhile, T.I. and actor Terrence Howard have retracted statements they made. Both claim had they known what Chris Brown was accused of they would’ve never spoken, according to E! News:
When asked by paparazzi last night if he had any comment on the Chris Brown incident with Rihanna, the actor said, “It’s just life, man. Chris is a great guy. He’ll be all right. And Rihanna knows he loves her. She’ll be all right. Just everybody’s got to get out of their way.”
But now, Howard is insisting he didn’t know about the allegations made against Brown when he made his remarks.
“When they asked me about Chris Brown the other day, I was in no way aware of what he had been accused of,” Howard said in a statement. “Had I known, I would have never had said something so insensitive.”
Howard is the second high-profile celeb in as many days to retract remarks they made about Brown and Rihanna.
Rapper T.I. issued a statement yesterday regretting comments he made the night before on Last Call With Carson Daly. T.I. said he “made a mistake of commenting before understanding the situation.”
E! News also reports Chris Brown is hiding out in Vegas at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino while waiting for the district attorney’s office to file charges, so at least he’s having fun. That’s probably the best thing he can do for his case right now. Short of going to Disneyland and punching Tinkerbell in the mouth.

His career should be dead right now, but it isn’t. It all depends on what happens next. Even if he gets convicted, all he has to do is make a show of contrition, like, have his agent put out a press release saying he’s in intensive counseling. Add something about how it’s all due to abuse he suffered as a child. Do a tearful interview on BET. He’ll be just fine after that. Rest assured that when the police get involved, it is not the first incident.
No one deserves to be beaten, and it is a crime to beat someone. However, typically before punches are thrown there is an escalation of violence that both people are part of.
From the reports, they both did shitty things to each other: possible cheating, screaming, name calling, throwing keys, etc. The back and forth ended up with her getting beaten. (Note that arguing isn’t illegal; hitting is.)
I feel bad for both of them. Chris apparently has a history of domestic violence in his family, and too often DV is the gift that keeps on giving. THe nicest people can get violent without conciously wanting to — it’s a reaction based on their history. Really, do you think he would have wanted things to end up this way? Or her either?
Sadly the previous incidents were not enough to get Chris to get some help before things got to this point. And also sadly, Rihanna apparently stuck with him after he treated her in ways she shouldn’t have put up with.
It is very easy to say things like: he’s an ass; lock him up and throw away the key. She should have left him a long time ago. She is to jealous and has a temper. Etc., etc. etc. But DV is complicated and can’t be boiled down to simple solutions. Because mixed up with the anger and tempers and violence is love and affection and history. And it is hard to know when the anger and violence is more important than the love and history.
My guess is that if they were nobodies she would likely get back together with him (read about the cycle of violence, the “honymoon” period and why it is hard to let go…). But with all the attention that would be more difficult. Probably lots of pressure to stay apart. Which probably would be best for both of them.
If someone hits you, you should not be with that person. And if you sometimes get so angry you hit someone, that’s a big sign that you need to get out as well.
