What Wat’s referring to are studies that link heightened endocrine levels of the mother with an increase of transgendered offspring. One of the first studies that picked up on this was done on DES mothers, who took the estrogenic chemical diethylstilbestrol between the 1940′s and 1970′s to prevent miscarriages. As a side effect, they had daughters that developed cervical and vaginal cancer by age 16, and sons who were born with, or developed, genital abnormalities.
The study also indicated that roughly 1/4 – 1/3 of the DES sons interviewed were dealing with transgender or gender dysphoria issues – so if mom’s raging on estrogen while she’s pregnant with a male fetus, that does indicate there could be a transgender problem later.
I think what you’re thinking of is indeterminate gender – “hermaphrodite” really isn’t the right term here because it means a set of fully functioning male/female genitals – snails and plants are born with that capacity, but humans? Not so much.
Wnat you’re thinking of is kids of indeterminate gender – what are sometimes called “intersex” babies. 1 in 2,000 children are born with this anomaly, but they’re born not with a simple XX or XY chromosomal lineup so you can’t look at the genetic crib sheet for help – they often have what’s called a “mosaic” work up – XX cells interspersed with XY cells. The medical community used to “decide” whether the kid was male or female and then push for immediate surgery to visibly “fix” their genitalia and make them look “normal”. Needless to say, there are a “reassigned” adults out there with mutiliated and poorly-functioning genitals, but also ones that don’t match the gender they really are.
And yeah, just because someone realizes they’re transgender that doesn’t mean their gender change will automatically makes them straight – sexual identity and sexual orientation are two very different things. Human sexuality is incredibly complex, and anything outside of the average person’s experience generally scares the shit out of a lot of people, which is why there are so many extreme reactions on this thread. Well, outside of the shirtless/obesity issue, I mean.

“Accepting yourself” in this situation means dealing with the fact that the body you have just doesn’t match with the one your psyche, or core, or brain says you SHOULD have. It means you can stop exhausting yourself by trying to make it fit, and modify what you can to mesh with who you really are. The fact that so much physical pain is involved must tell you something about how desperate transgendered people are to gain what you take for granted every damn day .
No “explanation” needed, since “transgender” just means you’re born one gender yet identify or live as another. Not having surgery – of any kind – doesn’t somehow disqualify you from “claiming” to be one. Do a little reading next time, fer chrissakes.

There are a lot of vital nerves down there, and some people don’t want to lose a modicum of sensation or sexual functionality – would you? You should get a medical journal less than 25 years old. Transgender is a diagnosable phenomenon starting in the brain in utero that can only be treated with gender reassignment. Or you could consult a psychotherapist and they’ll tell you the same thing

Didn’t I also read somewhere that the sex chromosomes can also tell whether a person is actually the same sex as the body they were born with, or is that just possible with hermaphroditism? A very good male friend of a former boyfriend of mine first came out as gay and then about a year or two later started the process of changing into a woman. The strange thing is that he/she was settled down with a woman at the time. My boyfriend said that this is supposedly a common occurrence because of the identification and empathy many transgender people feel toward the gender they are becoming. I don’t know, maybe he was never gay to begin with, or maybe people who are born gay will be gay whatever sex they are or become. Whatever, he started out as a man, came out of the closet though I don’t remember him dating any guys openly (maybe he was too uncomfortable doing so or felt his old friends would be too uncomfortable dealing with it), and now he’s a woman living with a woman. Sexuality is a very complex thing.
Has any of this been linked to the pill? I know that there is just a couple of molecules (or atoms) difference between estrogen and testosterone. If too much of one is in the body then it is metabolized into the other.
Going along with this, I studied that for a couple of years when I started doing research. We did animal studies that induced imposex by exposing them to high levels of estrogen during embryogenesis– but it only went from male to female. In other words, we could turn genetic males into females according to their sex organs.
