Legendary actor Charlton Heston passed away Saturday evening at the age of 84. He had been battling Alzheimer’s disease for the past six years, according to the AP:
“Charlton Heston was seen by the world as larger than life,” Heston’s family said in a statement. “We knew him as an adoring husband, a kind and devoted father, and a gentle grandfather with an infectious sense of humor. He served these far greater roles with tremendous faith, courage and dignity.”
The actor died at his home in Beverly Hills with his wife, Lydia, at his side, family spokesman Bill Powers said. He declined to comment on the cause of death or provide further details Sunday.
I like to believe somewhere in the hereafter Charlton Heston is doing what he loves best: Hunting damn, dirty apes with an Uzi. Rest in Peace, Moses. You were one of the greats.
Twenty-one gun salute after the jump. Or maybe just a trailer mash-up of The Ten Commandments if you want to get technical.

#99 and #100
Wow I come with facts and you come with swear words.
Thanks for making my point.
I must’ve hit close to home on that whole “gay” thing?
Anyhow, you sound like you don’t need to have a gun in you posession anyhow, what with your pent up rage and apparent anger issues.
Just look at it this way, C Heston stood up for what he beleived in, much like you standing up for your gay rights.
…good for you.
I hope that you get your priorities straight someday and move into the real world…
Stand up for your rights before they are all gone. The REAL crisis in this country is that no one seems to care that civil liberties are dissapearing.
This does apply to you, mr “F@#$ you and F^%# the NRA”
Even a worthless, burden to society like you gets civil rights. Tell all of your greenpeace and PETA buddies that I send my regards.
Comments for the late CH:
Jefferson’s commitment to liberty extended to many areas of individual freedom. In his “Commonplace Book,” he copied a passage from Cesare, Marquis of Beccaria related to the issue of gun control. The quote reads, “Laws that forbid the carrying of arms … disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes … Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.” He also once stated, “The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.
Chalton Heston on Thomas Jefferson
There is nothing more effective at quieting the left side than statistics and proof. R.I.P.
@ 93
I didn’t mean to be rude either, just trying to get some laughs. The UK is a very interesting case in the gun control battle, as the stricter the laws get the more gun crime proliferates.
CH had three levels of movies.
1) Playing Moses, El Cid, Ben-Hur or some other type of messiah in over the top old school Hollywood films.
2) Horrible pseudo sci-fi/action films like Planet of the Apes, The Omega Man, Soylent Green. Talk about Hollywood giving you the boot.
3) Cameo’s in Movies like True Lies to make him still look like a badass.
Then he turned into a NRA nut that will probably get me called a commie-lover by everyone with more shotgun shells than teeth. Personally, I loved the “you can take my guns now”. Heston may have been a decent actor in films that were also decent and a poor actor in films that were poor. What he did off camera were just publicity stunts. How can anyone who marched with MLK turn into the poster boy for the NRA? He was just an actor making a buck where he could.
i can respect that opinion. more than i can rerspect a person that yells obscenities and hides behind anonymity.
Remove the gunfrom the equationand you have a pretty clear cut and serious case of the government/law makers infringing on our bill of rights.
What’ll be next,riightto assemble,freedom to worship?
i is a very real threat to our way of life, and if unchecked will set precedent for other similar laws to osweep across the counttry.
I just can’t see where people blame himfor the death of innocents(in previous posts)
If that’s the case, the Henry Ford’s heirs had better preparerfor lots of class action lawsuits since they have made autos that thousand upon thousands of people get into accidents with every year.
We’ll also ban spoons and forks because they contribute to overeating.
Flies cause garbage to smell bad and the list can go on from here.
False logic.
J Jackson has pulled some insane publicity stunts in his career, so has A Sharpton, but people love them.(even after indiscretions)
Al gore is whoring out his version of the earth and global warming, yet people follow him as some sort of messiah. You dont tthink that HE doesit for attention?
Mayor marion barry-where to begin, smoked crack with a hooker, had muliple firearm offenses, recent dui’s and unpaid parking tickets-HE IS STILL AN ACTIVE DC COUNCIL MEMBER!!!!
Clinton has an affair in office and gets caught-people love him.
C Heston spends the twilight years of his life devoted to the constitution , second amendment rights FOR ALL AMERICANS and he is labeled a “gun nut” what the hell iis wrong with you people?????????????.
YES, he used his popularity to get things done, so has r reagan, fred thompson, jessie ventura and arnold schwartzenegger. shall I continue?
But, of all of the people that I just mentioned, the most influential person was C Heston.
Give the guy credit-you may not agree witth the politiics of the second amendment, that is your right and you dont have to own a gun. but people like charlton heston hAve made sure that another generation will keep laws from infringing on our civil rights.
when virginia eenacted those super expensive ticketts for in state drivers only-you should’ve seen how fast people acted to repeal that law. gov Tim kaines head was spinnig fromall of the fallout from va citizens.
“you can have my civil liberties, but DO NOT raise my taxes”
“when you stand up for your rights, you have to stand up for all of them, not just the ones that suit you”
…he did march with MLK because he was a patriot, he believed in civil rights, including the right to bear arms.HE also realizd that MLK wasn’t killed by a gun, he was killed by a nut with a gun(james earl ray). there is a difference.
just because you drive a car doesn’ make you guilty of vehicular manslaughter or mean that you drive around drunk all of tthe time.
and SHAME on the ACLU for remaining neutral in their stance on the second amendment!!!!
again, that says;”we at the ACLU believe in civil liberties and the bill of rights…except for the second amendment”
bunch of halfwits
The ACLU does stand for civil liberties except those it doesn’t agree with, look into it. Want to get technical? The right to bear arms was made by colonialists under British rule how many years ago? The British didn’t want insurrection so they wouldn’t allow citizens to own firearms or assemble. That is why they became amendments to a government who decided to become sovereign. So that the colonists could stand up to British rule and have a legal stance against them. It also allowed them to fight them. Times have changes greatly since them.
The British still do this in countries where these conflicts still happen, like Ireland. America fought for it’s sovereign rights to exist as a country back in the 18th century. The issue is that people still think these rights should still exist. If they did in the original stance, you could only own a gun if you were a white land owning Prodistant, if you firmly believed in this that still be the same? The second amendment did not apply to all Americans when this was made. It was created basically so a militia could be created to fight the British. After the British lost several things changed back like taxes. The new government originally fought British taxation then taxed the crap out of it’s citizens to fight a war that made severe debt. This almost turned into a second revolution.
The people who scare me are those who don’t read their history and think these rules that were made hundreds of years ago still apply. Do you practice the freedom to assemble? Freedom of the press? Don’t twist past laws that were made for a society over two hundred years ago. If you want to be true to those laws, carry a musket for self-defense or whatever. Besides, I don’t think the ACLU has ever stated “we at the ACLU believe in civil liberties and the bill of rights…except for the second amendment”. Besides, a car isn’t built to drive a person down. That is the lamest excuse of that argument and I am tired of people using it. A gun is made to shoot something.
I love this country and respect it’s laws. What I am scared of is the beer drinking NRA radicals who act like the government wants to disarm America. That isn’t going to happen. If so, it would have already taken place. I love the part in “Bowling for Columbine” where CH talks about how guns are going to be taken from Canadian citizens. More people per capita own guns in Canada than America. Yet they don’t have the violence and paranoia that happens with American gun owners. That just proves the propaganda the NRA spews.
“MLK wasn’t killed by a gun, he was killed by a nut with a gun”. That is called a double-negative, I learned this in grade-school, did you make it that far?
Uh, Ford gave quite a bit of money to the NAZI movement when they started. Think they believed in the 2nd amendment?
While it’s true not all conservatives are stupid, it is true that most of the people who are stupid are conservatives. Just my twist on an old quote from the 19th century.
Nice, so by your logic(Beer drinking NRA members)
all islamists are radical fundamentalists and we should pick and choose which of the 10 bill of rights suits us.
WOW, no wonder you disagree with C Hestons views on living in the united states.
Guns CAN kill people so CAN cars, and they both do-don’t blow that fact off. Just incase you are illiterats, in a prev post, I cited the CDC as car accidents killing injuring and maiming almost twice as many people per year than all gun accidents.
LEARN TO READ.
You can live in candyland where guns are the greatest threar to life in AMerica but an asshole behind the wheel of an automobile, drunk and doing twice the speedlimit is perfectly fine and of no consequesnce to your life.
You libs and these made up fact( say made up because apparently you make no efferot to research your claims) YOU ARE IGNORANT AND SCARED OF A THREAT THAT YOU PROPAGATE IN YOUR OWN MIND.
Read this article…http://media.www.kaleo.org/media/storage/paper872/news/2007/09/13/News/Survey.U.s.Has.Highest.PerCapita.Gun.Ownership.Rate-2966141.shtml
“WE IN AMERICA(5% of the world population)OWN THE MOST FIREARMS-30-35%!!!!!!!!” No mention of Canada in there.
Perhaps if you look at the fact, and avoid creative liberalism(living in candyland)
you would see that C Heston was right.
Keep prosecuting people that choose to LEGALLY own a firearm. Who are you to tell me, or anyone, that our Bill of Rights is outdated and needs to be changed? I like it just the way it is.
Maybe you should tmove to a more fascist or socialist country?
Canada is not too far, and has gun restrictions to boot!
They may welcome you there?
Bad news for you, though-guns will not go anywhere in the near future, not with the second most powerful lobbyist group in AMERICA fighting for gun rights-THE NRA.
Maybe you should renounce your citizenship.
there is this GREAT new thing called tolerance?
You should try it or-AN OPEN MIND?
Just because we live in the most industrialized country in the world, does not mean that we are safe.
Tyranny and crime don’t take vacations.
MOVE TO CANADA! You’ll love it there. You can live in a socialist country, pay lots of taxes, wait wait wait top see a doctor and be completely defenseless.
..Oh and by the way, I USE my civil liberties aALL of the time and take an active role in my community.
I protest legislation that affronts me, I just wrote letters to my congressmen and Mayor A Fenty (as well as Cathy Lanier) protesting the ILLEGAL DC gun ban and door to door seizures, I vote at the state local and federal level EVERY TIME! And I say the blessing with my kids before dinner.
When was the last time you did anything but try and have our civil rights removed?
Sounds like the only thing that you exercise is your narrow midset and your mouth. You cannot even come into the argument with FACTS!!!
So, yeah, I exercise ALL of my freedoms-keep your laws off of them!
Just because you dont want them, doesn’t mean that others don’t.
The nazi party started out the same way…we know how that ended.
I have just given all of the “gun grabbing” liberals 2 pages of facts about guns and gun crimes, yet you still believe that C Heston , the NRA and legal gun ownership is a relic? You TRULY do not appreciate how well you have it here in the states.
My guns have never committed a crime. The majority of Americans can say the same about theirs.
Your stance IS NOT wrong, your facts are.
The title is pretty funny, though.
I think that even he might have chuckled at that one?
Dude, don’t have a heart attack. I never said anything about Islam, taking guns away or any rights away. I never said that I was a liberal either. It sounds like you make up propaganda in your own head. It’s also the same argument that I hear over and over. The car thing is bullshit. You cannot compare cars to guns anymore than you can compare allergic reactions to airplane crashes. A gun is made for one function, to shoot a projectile (bullet, musket, spoons & forks) into another creature, preferably a person. Those who go to the gun range usually shoot paper targets with drawings of a person on it. Yes some hunt but that isn’t the issue.
I do have tolerance. I actually live in a state where it’s ok to take a concealed weapon on school campus. The people who scare the crap out of me are those who “jump the gun” and start spewing off stuff that I am not or misguided factoids when this issue comes up. I have been to Canada, it’s a beautiful place. I don’t want to live there because I was born here and I like it here. I am not trying to take your freedoms away so relax. I have never done anything to remove “my civil rights”.
Also, why bring in the socialized medicine thing? That has nothing to do with this. To be honest, I would rather try a medical system like that. The medical system here is a complete joke. I waited a year to have an appendectomy so the medical system could make money off of me. So maybe there is a chance I wouldn’t have to wait as long for that if I lived in Canada. Hmm…
Candyland as you say seems more like the place in your head “If I think this way therefore it is”. Your argument has changed to the point that you say things like “you disagree with C Hestons views on living in the united states”. Is CH talking through you from beyond the grave now? How do you know what his views were on living in the United States? Everything I read about him says he was a humble actor who gives more credit to everyone working on what film he is in than himself. He also supported independent film before he was in the big blockbuster films in the 50′s. It’s how he got his start. Did you know that?
Honestly, people like you scare the crap out of me. People like you should never own a gun. Also, don’t call people “illiterat” when you can’t even spell it.
There is no such thing as misguided factoids, only facts that you casually choose to ignore.
…some of the prices you pay for living in a capitalist society…paying for things that people make profits on.
Yes Canada is beautiful, and I enjoy the people, their friendliness and the great outdoors of that counrty.
The us govt spends 44.7% GDP on health care versus the 70% that the Canadians do.Life expectancy is slightly longer there, but infant mortaliy is much lower in Canada than herer in the US. We also have the best trained and schooled Dr’s in the world along with the most advanced surgery.
Again, a fantasy to believe that the US governement does not already contribute BILLIONS of dollars per year to the health care system.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_and_American_health_care_systems_compared
You go ahead and “cut your budget” on your health and personal health care, I’ll take our expensive and imperfect health care system.
Your opinion on waiting for neccessary operations will, hopefully, change when you have children that need immediate surgery.
You’ve been watching too many “sensational” M Moore movies if you believe that socialized medecine is better than that here in the US.
Without pharm. companies here in the US, Canada’s health care system would be nothing more that a bunch of witch doctors prescribing tinctures and tonics for heart attacks.
Charlton Heston wore his beliefs on his sleeve, in case you missed the point of this blog. His career as an activist FAR overshadowed his acing career.
people like you pave the road to hell with good intentions and good ideas.
There is nothing wrong about passion in life or sticking up for what you love/enjoy. Thats what it takes nowadays to keep people from removing it.
Try and stick to the point thought, there are plenty of other and more dangerous daily activities and “vehicles” with which crimes are perpetrated on a daily basis-not just guns.
I’m glad that my fact and stated points scare you, it means that I’m finally showing you the error of your ways. besides, your argument is weak and half thought. you have shown me no supporting evidence to back up your “claims” as I have for you.
This really isn’t a debate, its’ just you complaining about people’s rights to own guns.
G
Heh. Right now, good ol’ Moses is sitting in Hell with Ronald Reagan, both of them trying to figure out what to do with melted jelly beans.
You know, there was recently a defining moment regarding Mr. Heston. That was when Michael Moore (yeah, JJ, I’ll save you the trouble of calling him a Communist) confronted him about his possible hypocrisy re gun ownership. You know, in “Bowling for Columbine.” Instead of sticking to his guns (pun not intended) and defending his opinions he skulked away and hid. What a hero.
Your factoids don’t scare me, you do. You preach like an authoritarian fascist. You act like everyone’s opinion is wrong if it doesn’t fall in with your’s. I am not complaining about an individual’s right to own a gun, I just think someone as boneheaded as you shouldn’t own one. Anyone can post something, that doesn’t mean its gospel so you shouldn’t use it that way. That’s why I don’t do it. I stand by my word without links to wikipedia. You haven’t shown me any errors other than you are now using spell check.
You are right that this isn’t a debate. You think that if you don’t like riding in the back of the bus then get off the bus. That isn’t the basis of a debate.
Your screen name says it all “who cares”
You say that I preach like an “authoritarian fascist”, but you argue your point with name calling and stereotypes. WEAK!
I’m sorry that you feel overwhelmed by facts and logic. I’ll tone it down for you from here on out.
We’ll agree to disagree since you just seem to be using my arguments as your own.
I hope you find out exactly what you stand for and decide what you believe in because your past few posts have been rife with mixed messages and contradictions. Still unsure of YOUR convictions-I’ve made mine evident.
I vote, I protest, I vote, I lobby my elected representatives and go to church-YET you can still call me the fascist?!
Sure, I’m a fascist because I believe in the bil lof rights-ALL OF IT. Even the part that allows you to post your insane rants and call me, and NRA members abroad, names.
People used to call that freedom.
lets not forget that you labeled all NRA members in your first post as ” beer swilling rednecks with more shotgun shells than teeth”
If you have tolerance, it must be buried under all of that WONDERFUL personality? How about some racist and anti-semitic remarks to go with that slur?
Check yourself-I already told you previously that your point of view is not wrong, your facts are(or lack thereof)
Fascist is a big word for you. Have fun looking it up.
…And why is it exactly that you don’t think that I should be allowed to own guns?
Because i’m outspoken? Believe and defend responsible gun ownership?
Obey the law? Stick up for the second amendment?
I’m sure glad that people like you don’t run this country.-but I’M the fascist here, right?
You sound like just the guy for the job over in China…telling people what they can’t do. And brushing aside facts that are not convenient for you or your weak argument.
That is a shallow and baseless opinion, but I guess I have to respect it.
See how that works, it’s called AMERICA and civil rights. Try it, I bet You’ll like it.
No wonder you didn’t like Heston, you have no clue as to what he was trying to work for.
…Oh yeah, he did it ALL FOR THE FAME, and parlayed that into a WHOPPER of a successful film career in his last years(are you getting all of this sarcasm-cause I’m laying it on pretty thick).
I cannot continue this conversation with you. Think of what you believe in THEN argue for it, don’t just make it up as you go along.YOU HAVE NO CREDIBILITY ON THIS ISSUE. Just a fly on the wall…
…..some people’s kids……
@118
When Mike Moore shows up at your home(under false pretenses) and blindsides you with those types of questions ON CAMERA what would you have done.
I bet you beleve that WAL MART was the real culprate in the columbine massacre too?
Talk about somone that wants attention, he is a sensationalist muckraker who’s point I could more easily agree with if his tactics and methods were not so “greaseball” and resembled sucker-punches.
Even politicians prepare for an unscripted debate.
Who had the advantage there-?Lard ass, sensationalist M MOORE or the 80 year old with Alzheimers?
Yeah, that was a defining moment for me, too
“Michael Moore, now with 50% more bullshit-for those of you who can’t or don’t want to make opinions of your own”
One time, on Spongebob Squarepants, I saw him build a fire underwater and shark was running around in circles.
This MUST BE TRUE…I saw it on TV
You guys’ll believe anything-especially from 3rd rate “documentary sytle” filmmakers. you forget that these things are opinions, in the style of documentaries.
When you go camping, do you look for the Blair witch too?
“Opinions are like assholes, everyone has them and they all STINK!
especially M Moore”-ME
just one of the masterfully edited scenes from everyones favorite mockumentary.
We are taken to the North County Bank in Michigan, which — like several other banks in the United States — allows people who buy a Certificate of Deposit to receive their interest in the form of a rifle or shotgun. (The depositor thereby receives the full value of the interest immediately, rather than over a term of years.)
Moore goes through the process of buying the CD and answering questions for the federal Form 4473 registration sheet. Although a bank employee makes a brief reference to a “background check,” the audience never sees the process whereby the bank requires Moore to produce photo identification, then contacts the FBI for a criminal records check on Moore, before he is allowed to take possession of the rifle.
Moore asks: “Do you think it’s a little bit dangerous handing out guns at a bank?” The banker’s answer isn’t shown.
So the audience is left with a smug sense of the pro-gun bank’s folly. Yet just a moment’s reflection shows that there is not the slightest danger. To take possession of the gun, the depositor must give the bank thousands of dollars (an unlikely way to start a robbery). He must then produce photo identification (thus making it all but certain that the robber would be identified and caught), spend at least a half hour at the bank (thereby allowing many people to see and identify him), and undergo an FBI background check (which would reveal criminal convictions disqualifying most of the people inclined to bank robbery). A would-be robber could far more easily buy a handgun for a few hundred dollars on the black market, with no identification required.
The genius of Bowling for Columbine is that the movie does not explicitly make these obvious points about the safety of the North County Bank’s program. Rather, the audience is simply encouraged to laugh along with Moore’s apparent mockery of the bank, without realizing that the joke is on them for seeing danger where none exists. This theme is developed throughout the film.
Who are you talking to? You rant 6 posts off while saying I can’t continue this conversation? No one is talking to you and you still post? Are you off your meds?
For clarification, it wasn’t a shark running around on Sponge Bob, it was a starfish. It sounds like you can repeat “Bowling for Columbine” verbatim. Admit it, deep down you love the movie. You wouldn’t know all this about the show if you didn’t. That is called sarcasm, you need to work on your’s because it’s not funny.
You call someone a “lardass” and think I am the one who is racist or anti-semitic? Uh, ok? That is a total oxymoron. I guess I hit a nerve when I made that remark about probably being called a commie by everyone with more shotgun shells than teeth. Thanks for labeling yourself. Oh, and thanks for saying CH was an 80 year old with Alzheimer’s. You hit the nail on the head with that one.
I will stop saying fascist, I’ll just start calling you a “black shirt” instead.
I was’t talking to You-whocares.
Your overblown sense of self importance knows no bounds.
WHOCARES-
this one is for you. You can call me whatever you want, but you still didn’t answer of the questions.
By the way, thanks for correcting me on spongebob squarepants-your knowledge in this area is astonishing-perhaps you’re feeling a bit out of your league in this chat?No wonder this has been a one sided affair, I’m trying to rationalize with a 7 year old.
Maybe a Dungeons and Dragons forum would better suit you?POkemon, digimon-your pick.
By the way, CH DID was an 80 year old suffering from Alzheimers…I still can’t see why you gloat over that fact?
I NEVER called M Moore a commie-you and the others did. Besides, who hasn’t seen that movie. I watch movies that I dont like, that’s how I know that I don’t like them.
You apparently didnt like ANY of CH’s movies, but let us all know about that fact on your first post.
C’mon out of the closet-you were really sweet on the old guy, werent you?
You own his ENTIRE collection?
TURN off the cartoons and turn on CSPAN, spongebob whocares
The comments on this site by the smug, arrogant, hateful liberals are proof positive of why they, and liberalism, deserve nothing but intolerance.
I’d rather not have guns in the community, but let’s be realistic: a person who really wants to obtain a gun will get it, by fair means or foul. A gun ban disarms the ones who want to legally obtain guns.
But be fair: It’s also scary when an angry young man, in anger, has access to his father’s firearms when he is blinded by rage.
Dura Lex Sed Lex. But that doesn’t automatically make it RIGHT.
To the retard that compared Heston with Hitler:
Hitler was a lot more like YOU:
He was anti-gun (for the populace);
He was a Vegetarian, Cocaine-loving, freak;
And finally, he believed Society was God, just like any Lefto Retard!
Remember, he was a fellow Socialist!
Why the fuck are Replublicans so proud of themselves?
im glad that sick fuck is dead i only wish he had died slowly and painfuly from a gun shot wound he is in part responsible for a great deal of many deaths including children as young as 6. he was a deluded cold blooded FOOL.
It’s a shame that these left wing communist low life use this site to try and promote thier gun grabbing anti-gun agenda, You would have thought they would have learned their lesson about being un-able to protect their familys and loved ones when the Nazis gassed and burned others like them in the death camps -but Noooooooooo.
Your just waiting for it to happen again, and it will. Because you won’t have the means to protect yourselves or for those you love most, this is what was meant when he (Mr. Heston) dared them to take his gun from his cold dead hands as he would have went down fighting – unlike you left wing scum of today.
Rest in Peace Mr. Heston
