Britney Spears’ release: Why, God? WHY?!

February 7th, 2008 // 88 Comments

Britney Spears’ release from UCLA Medical Center has many people scratching their heads. It turns out that a court-appointed lawyer stepped in and decided that Britney was no longer a danger to herself and others. People reports:

The procedure calls for a hearing at the hospital to find out whether the hold is justified. The rep for the court, called a “hearing referee” – who is usually a lawyer – interviews the patient and doctor to determine if there’s “just cause” for detainment.
“This is when law and medicine collide,” says attorney Terry K. Wasserman, who’s not involved in the Spears matter, “when a lawyer can override a doctor’s opinion.”

Britney Spears’ parents are obviously none-too-thrilled and issued the following statement last night to the media:

“As parents of an adult child in the throes of a mental health crisis, we were extremely disappointed this morning to learn that over the recommendation of her treating psychiatrist, our daughter Britney was released from the hospital that could best care for her and keep her safe.
“We are deeply concerned about our daughter’s safety and vulnerability and we believe her life is presently at risk. There are conservatorship orders in place created to protect our daughter that are being blatantly disregarded. We ask only that the court’s orders be enforced so that a tragedy may be averted.”

My sources tell me that, after releasing the statement, a concerned Lynne and Jamie Spears met with Pentagon officials, The Super Friends and that kid from Home Alone who, sadly, forgot his paint buckets. So much for devising a fully functional crisis response. Kevin, you’re such a disease.*

*My apologies to anyone whose never watched Home Alone and has no idea what I’m talking about. You also have my sympathy for living what must be a shallow, empty existence. Even if you’re a doctor that saves orphans.

  2. wull, she’s definitely a danger to me…

  3. Yes, McLoven, we discussed it briefly yesterday..

    It makes me happy

#49 – I didn’t say she doesn’t need treatment. I said they lacked sufficient reliable evidence to take her freedom away and try to force treatment on her. You’ve seen lots of cases where that worked, have you? Do you have any idea how ineffective forced psychiatric treatments are? There are good reasons why the standard is very high for the government to force psychiatric treatment on a non-criminal adult.

Some people just can’t handle this outcome, but it happens all the time. A 72-hour involuntary hospitalization is designed to engage a patient with clinical treatment in the hope that he or she will voluntarily continue it after the 3 days are up. Most of the time that’s exactly how it works. In some cases the patient clears up a bit and declines further treatment, even though all the doctors think that’s a bad idea. Most doctors also think it’s a bad idea to pursue a court order for extended involuntary treatment under those circumstances, because it often makes things much worse in the long run (the patient never trusts anybody again when they start talking about treatment, which they rightfully associate with imprisonment).

She’ll get better when she decides to do it on her own, and not a minute sooner.

  5. Rooting For Spears Family

    The Psychiatrist said “She’s fucked-up ! … keep her”
Mommy and Daddy said “Won’t somebody please for the love of god think of the children…..keep her”
The Lawyer-Jackal-Bottom-Feeder said “you have no LEGAL right to keep her”
    Britney said “Duh-Blurble-Shoon-Mama-Me-Wanna-Pee-M8″
Sammy Luftwhatever said “I told you I’d be back … hehehehehe” … *snif*
Adnan The Great said *click-click* “Give a smile here sweetie ”
And the saga that is Britney Spears and her free media coverage continues.

I gotta tell ya …. I LIKE reading about all the bat-shit crazy stuff she and her
kin-folk say and do. It makes for a funny conversation, that’s for sure. YOU GO GIRL …I mean …. Y’ALL
It’s like reading the comic paper clips…. Don’t ever get normal Britney … You and your kin stay just the way you are ! You’re All so loveable this way … Hell I’d watch a sitcom like this anytime … HAHAHAHAHA ……..

  7. clareargent

@#50 yeah, that outfit is nuts. How can anybody think she’s even partially functional? Put her back before someone gets hurt! And if K-Fed is smart he’ll HIDE her kids from her.

  8. Auto-Erotic-Asphixiation

@57 Nobody ever accused K-fed of being smart though

  9. Juaquin Ingles

Orange and brown NEVER go with purple… UNLESS it’s from bruises left from smacking a bitch around, and then it’s perfectly acceptable.

  13. #1hater

i wonder who’s liabel for brit when she drives her mercedes through a van full of blind orphans, killing them and their catholic nun caretakers…..she oughta be restrained until stops talking like kelly osborne…

  14. Hot mama

I love how people who come to the conclusion that medical professionals (the family too) in fact MAY be wrong on their assessment of competence come to the conclusion that a LAWYER (with absolutely no expertise in the matter, who has clear motive and does not even have the pretense of objectivity or impartiality) obviously knows that it’s best that she be released.

  16. HughJorgan

There must be alot of “if she’s sane what the fuck am I doing here?” going on back at the UCLA med center right now.

  17. Richard McBeef

#16 – You are right on. The world sucks. You should kill yourself, no one likes you anyway.

  21. mizscarlett

It’s a lawyer because the situation involves basic rights under the Constitution. Some of you people are complete retards. Do you know anything about the country you grew up in?

  24. natinc

I really enjoyed not seeing her all over the news these few days. Please send her back .

  25. Kat

Oh, God. How dare that lawyer step in and uphold Brittney Spears’ civil rights and liberties! That bastard. It’s disgusting. How could he sleep at night and blatantly disregard the conservatorship order that affords her father power over her finances. Oh wait…

I know a lot of insane people that should be in a therapy or a medicated-induced coma. It doesn’t mean I have the right to force them into it. Obviously the doctors didn’t have absolute documentation that Spears was planning to kill herself or others. They were being cautious. And I can understand that, but there’s this little thing called the constitution. Some lawyers take it pretty seriously, I hear.

  26. ha8ter

You people are boring me today. Come up with something more intelligent.

  27. Movie Stealer

I watched Home Alone and noticed how similar the story was to a French movie called 3615 code PereNoel released a few months beforehand. The French movie is not a comedy, it is a scary movie, about a child having to stay on his own at Christmas because his mother is an executive in a big department store. He starts chatting with Santa Claus on the Minitel (IE did not exist yet) and the bad guy creeps in his house and the boy find ways to defend himself. Yet another movie stolen from a foreign country, conveniently repackaged as an American original thing (where the parents fly to… France).

  28. Lindsay

“i wouldnt let you sleep in my room if you were GROWING ON MY ASS” – buzz

  29. Me

would that not be considered practicing medicine without a license if an attorney can decide the health status of a person???? hmmm, interesting. perhaps I don’t have to go to medical school after all to become a doctor. I can just go to law school and take matters into my own hands.

  30. Pilatunes

My car insurance just went up.

  31. jack

I don’t know about you, but when I see someone dressed that way, my first thought is “Oh yeah, that’s a sane person.”

  32. Society and her parents beg her to get treatment, and a goddamn lawyer undoes it all. Fucktard.

  33. Stacy

Umm, is it just me, or is there a red mark on her arm?
Looks to me like a cigar burn haha

  34. Blondamnation

they need to not let her out until she can dress herself, she’s a danger to society in that outfit. (The BOOTS-PLEASE SOMEBODY MAKE IT STOP!! Those “crazy boots” are what her doctors need to look at. I think they have her under hypnosis and they’re leading her all over LA, hitting up gas stations and Carls Jr drive-thru’s..)

  35. Blondamnation

“hmmm, what to wear to my release party?(it’s not a record release party? Ohhh, THAT kind of release-goody! AdninTime!!) ”
“Purple dress, brown plaid hat, and my lucky boots..brown, no, white white purse. Come on voices- we look hot!”

  36. la lohan

wow Brit Brit looks like SHIT SHIT.

  37. Iago

The lawyer didn’t say she couldn’t have treatment. He said it was HER DECISION. Some of you people are complete idiots. You can’t help someone that doesn’t WANT to be helped. Physical illness differs from mental illness in that regard. . The lawyer didn’t say she SHOULDN’T get treatment, he ruled that treatment shouldn’t be FORCED. That’s right: she shouldn’t be imprisonment when she hasn’t committed a crime. You should be glad you live in a country where doctors can’t lock you up arbitrarily. Dipshits.
