Britney Spears’ new video is way cooler than it should be

March 12th, 2008 // 135 Comments

Britney Spears’ brand new video for “Break the Ice” debuted today. Like I posted yesterday the thing is all kinds of crazy anime and was supposedly Britney’s idea. I seriously doubt she has a single clue what’s going down in this video but it’s, admittedly, kind of badass. She probably just stared at the pretty colors and clapped her hands until someone brought her a cookie. Coincidentally, for her next video, Britney wants to be played by an Oreo which, for the sake of accuracy, will be Double Stuffed.

Thanks to Paul who’s a Fullmetal Hardass.

It’s a little bit like “Toxic.” I don’t blame them for using a cartoon instead of the real thing.

To be fair this video could have been applied to any one of her new songs, it doesn’t have a topic, nor is it related to the song, still fits however.

The anime to represent musician isn’t anything original. I specifically remember Aaliyah doing it for her album promo. Don’t know if anyone did it before her…

Dye her hair purple, shorten it, and you got yourself a very short episode of Ghost in the Shell (the opening shots are almost identical) with a little bit Jin Roh and Cowboy Bebop thrown in.

That wasn’t too bad. It was nothing but pastiche and not all that original, but it was competently directed and plotted.

This only proves that anime’ stopped being cool 20 years ago. Once it has been co-opted by Brit it has already jumped the shark.

I’m in agreement with 3, 9, and 12. I was starkly reminded of Ghost in the Shell. I was actually pretty happy with the idea to make it a cartoon. It removes a lot of her influence (it can anyway). But for all the creative effort that went into it, they may as well have just used footage from say, “America’s Funniest Home Videos” for all the plot mattered.

Ummm… it’s Ghost in the Shell intro scene (Almost IDENTICAL), then it’s Kill Bill’s animé scenes, then it rips off the Matrix animes, this is the least original animated (non-parody) animé I’ve ever seen.

Thats right GHOST IN THE SHELL!

    WHAT THE FSCK???

This is some bullshiat right here!!

There were even similarities in the scene with the blond in that tube.

It was like Ghost in the Shell meets the worhtless skank Aeon Flux!!

    What a piece of crap.

I loved the actual video (although it made no sense) and I love anime. However, the song is real shit (it’s Brtiney so that’s no surprise) and so the video, therefore, sucks big ass. Too bad, if somebody else used it, it would have been better.

The new cd isn’t bad, actually. Many reviewers are saying just that.

I have to admit, if this were a show, I’d watch it. I thought it was kick ass.

It did make me miss the old Britney though. I hope she gets back on track and makes a good comeback.

Hey, if anyone told me Christina Aguilera was going to stop being a skank and turn her image around, I’d have laughed at you. But she did it.

That, sir, was embarrassing shite. A tepid rip-off of Ghost in the Shell featuring a grinning mannequin with horse lips and hot pants. Clunky action, ridiculous plot, and oh, an unlistenable song.

As an anime fan, i call shenanigans.

Look I’m a girl and not a geek so I don’t get this shit. The last cartoon I watched was beauty and the beast and belle was hotter than this cartoon and the beast is hotter than present day batshit crazy Britney.

The lady (who looks nothing like Brit ,she wishes she was that tall and lean) has weird thin lips and the video is messy and all over the place it has no real point, no real story, it could have been really well done but, it’s not.

P.S. Superfish revealed WAY too much of himself by complementing this
and Randal that better be a joke, the last thing we need is our own literary Chris Crocker because here at the Superficial we will NEVER leave Britney alone.

I respect Britney for venturing out & trying something new…
    but she blatently ripped the late A A L I Y A H off.
Aaliyah said herself that she doesn’t fancy copy-cats.

I watched all of Britney’s passed videos the other night
& her DVD for “In the Zone”…
It’s becomes very clear that this is a girl who was used by her label.
They fed her every word, every breath, she did not have a mind of her own.

They made her what she is today…

Nope, I don’t like it at all. It’s just another lame slack-as5 attempt at putting out a video that is a half-assed [attempted] cover-up of the state of Ms Spears.

To me, it just looks like this is a project someone was already working on — for starters the chick in the video doesn’t even look like Britney at all, for the most part — that some producer or whoever thought may be ripe for hi-jacking and passing off as a music video.

Secondly, where is the lip-synch? Had this character sung along in the video to the lyrics then I might have thought this collection of anime images was actually MEANT to be a Britney Spears video.

Overall, another cop-out (in my opinion!)

**Oh, I just had a thought.

This video looks like nothing more than a fan video on YouTube, with a song set to images from a completely irrelevant anime cartoon (that isn’t even very good).
