Bill Hicks Died 20 Years Ago Today

Bill Hicks

In 2009, I picked up a copy of Love All The People: The Essential Bill Hicks which had a profound effect on how I approached comedy, politics, and humanity in general. Although, apparently not profound enough because five years later I’m still writing this above a gallery of celebrity tits. Anyway, my point is Bill Hicks was a goddamn prophet, and to commemorate the 20th anniversary of his death (Which has literally left me in such an anxious, panicked frenzy for years that I would die of cancer in my early 30s that I subjected myself to a colonoscopy just last week.) Patton Oswalt published a forward he’d written last year to appear in a new edition of Cynthia True’s American Scream which never materialized. So here that is so hopefully some of you will be exposed to one of the greatest voices in stand-up comedy before we return to celebrities making wacky, wild faces! *sprays you with seltzer water* Bring the kids.

Thank you for commemorating Bill Hicks. He is my moral compass. He understood the tits game, so you are all good on that front, Fish.

“Let me assure you right now, there are d%#k jokes on the way.” Bill Hicks

  3. Denis Leary

    He sucked. Total plagiarist.

  4. alex

So um, is that Bill Hicks or George Zimmerman?

  5. malaka

i like kinison and hedberg too.

    • the great ones die too soon. the great ones who live just live too long and we stop thinking of them as great…but that doesn’t change the fact.

      • Johnny Barbells

…bill actually credited sam with heavily influencing his comedy (which is why i always thought it was silly when i used to hear those “kinison is just doing hicks” accusations) …a lot of sam’s stuff is dated now, but at the time, what a freakin’ comedy genius, i listened to his cassettes over & over …hedberg was our generation’s steven wright, which is a huge compliment.

  6. So where’s the photos from this colonoscopy? Every day we get photos taken with cameras shoved up celebrity asses…it’s time to give back.

  7. dirk diggler

    RIP Dennis Leary Mk 1.0

  8. Love Hicks. Though Goat Boy always brings out my inner librarian.

Hate how when I share pages from the Sup they turn into links with no fucking thumbnail that gives people no fucking clue what it is unless they click the link, though. Fix that, damn it.

  9. Nobody told me this was the anniversary of his death. Now I suppose you’ll say that I missed the parade too…???

  10. Johnny Barbells

…all that stuff patton wrote in the beginning about lenny bruce? that is exactly how i have always felt about hicks… i get why people dig him, i understand his influence & why he’s important, but he never made me laugh …and i tried …so many of my friends (civilians and comedians) love hicks, and have pushed him on me, but he just never did it for me.

…all that stuff patton wrote at the end about comedians gloming-on to him after his death, i saw that exact same thing happen after patrice o’neal died (another comedian who was HUGELY influential & respected by other comedians) …i was good friends with patrice, and i saw a few comedians on facebook crying virtual tears over their “brother” or “best friend”…guys who i knew for a fact had’nt spoken to patrice in a while, or whom he did’nt really care for all that much.

…once again, patton proves what a razor sharp mind he possesses …one of the most cerebral comedians working today.

  11. Mike Walker

    >I subjected myself to a colonoscopy just last week

Administered by Dr. Ribecca, no doubt.

  12. “…and other people have remembered, they come back to us and they say, ‘hey, don’t worry, don’t be afraid, ever..because, it’s just a ride,’ and we…

    kill those people…(laughter)…”

    RIP Hicks.

  13. Aren’t humanity neat? Bullshit. We’re a virus with shoes, okay? That’s all we are.

  14. Sizzle

  15. Rob Ford

    Hicks was the man.

And not…Hicks was the man because he’s respected.

He was the man because his bits were really funny. I first started laughing at Bill Hicks material when I was 16 in 1999, eventually discovered various clips Kevin Booth posted to the Sacred Cow site long long before Youtube existed. His stuff is just timeless and so so fucking smart. Still love the old Hicks albums, and movies, especially Sane Man.

    Long live Bill.
