Bernie Mac dies of pneumonia (1957 – 2008)

August 10th, 2008 // 104 Comments

Comedian Bernie Mac passed away Saturday morning from pneumonia. Earlier last week, it was reported he would make a full recovery despite have been previously diagnosed with sarcoidosis a disease that affects the immune system. Sadly, Bernie didn’t pull through. People reports:

“[He] passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital,” his rep, Danica Smith, told PEOPLE. “No other details are available at this time. We ask that his family’s privacy continues to be respected.”

It was later revealed Bernie’s hospitalization was more serious than it was reported. He was put into intensive care a full week before the media was aware of his health problems which were played down to protect his family’s privacy, according to People:

The sister-in-law says Mac’s inflammatory lung disease contributed to his death. “He had sarcoidosis, but it was in remission,” she says. “But because he had it, his immune system was compromised. He had an infection … He was on a new medication that suppresses the immune system, and that’s where the pneumonia came from.”
She reveals that Mac – having trouble breathing and running a fever – was actually hospitalized on July 24, eight days before the date given for his admittance. The actor was diagnosed with pneumonia and immediately placed on a ventilator.

Bernie Mac is survived by his wife Rhonda of 30 years and their daughter Je’Niece who were at his bedside when he passed. ‘Merica, we lost a good one. Rest in Peace, Bernie.

Sure, he was “funny” when you put a crowd of laughing like hyenas, falling all over themselves like children, shouting-back black fools out in the audience. There are a variety of knock-knock jokes that will having kindergarteners cracking up, and you can always save “Interrupting Cow” for the encore. Bernie Mac had his audience, which is fine, and he made them almost as happy as the day they accidentally got their neighbor’s welfare check as well as their own. But let’s not confuse any of that with actual talent. When he died, there was no real loss.

    To comment no. 43:

you dumb FUCK, no one cares about your unsubtle and shitty attempts at racism.

We go 42 comments without any real talk about his blackness, and you just have to pop up.

Well why don’t you go find Bernie and crack that joke to him in person, and see how he takes it? I think Mr Mac knew a few things about jokes, maybe he could be a good judge of your humor if you don’t trust my judgement.

In doing so, you’d be ridding us of a parasite like you. Fool, have some respect for the dead.

I find this weird. Bernie Mac was exactly 8 days older than my mama, who passed away at 50 in March. My prayers are with his family. No matter what status anyone has, death hits hard on any family.

    RIP Bernie Mac

It doesn’t mean other people dying isn’t -we just don’t know about them personally so you can’t feel for it on a personal level.

I’ve rarely posted anything serious on this site,
    but
some of you are real assholes. This man was funny…but more than that, he was a devoted father and husband (something really nice to see after all the Edwards’ crap over the weekend), and he seems like he was a genuinely nice guy.

Many of you get on these boards to spout loads of shit that you’d never have the courage to say to someone’s face. So just remember, when you’re posting your nonsense, that you aren’t edgy, or racist, or shocking…you’re just a coward hiding behind a computer screen.

yeeeeah, sure. Howsabout this – clean up your own shit first (the epidemic of black kids being raised by moms and grandmothers after “dad” skips out), and then go after white men for having affairs while providing for their families. I won’t hold my breath while I wait.

Malcolm…I’m not sure what his has to do with anything. Bernie Mac was a devoted husband. Period. It’s refreshing to see someone in the public eye who is faithful to their spouse. What does race have to do with being a good family man? Unfortunately, you are clearly one of those people who want to divide everything into black and white: the black’s should clean up their problems first and then we can deal with the white assholes.

And who cares if Edwards was providing financially for his family? I’d rather have a husband who was unemployed and faithful then someone who could buy me anything I wanted but was cheating. Please. What a load of crap.

Oh, and Malcolm (73)…what about cleaning up my own shit? How quick you were, when I said Mac was a nice guy, to assume that I was black. I’m not…I’m a white woman who happens to NOT decide everyone’s worth based on the colour of their skin (as you do).

I hate to be an asshole, because I love Bernie Mac, but doesn’t anyone have a clue? Nobody under the age of like 75 has died from JUST pneumonia since Hoover was president. Think, people…what disease would one need to have that would cause pneumonia and then death? Think immune deficiency.

@79 yes Bernie Mac had gone into remission for sarcoidosis in which he had lumps of cells that form in his body’s organs. His immune system was indeed weak.

Why, yes, #79, you are an asshole. Mac had sarcoidosis, which is an autoimmune disease; but it is NOT AIDS (nor does it have anything to do with being transmitted by any kind of sexuality).

You are perhaps living under a rock.

@86 I’ll admit that Im not the best speller in the world by any means, but this isn’t about spelling and grammer. It’s about giving recognition to our deceased. When people realize that having one of the highest IQs, or being rich isn’t what life is really about the epiphany will hit them like a ton of bricks. Since Im not all that great at spelling and grammer Im not taking up education as my major. Im really good at helping to take care of people, and so my major is nursing. I know enough to be able to do my job in that field. I bet there isn’t a person out there in the world who doesn’t have flaws in their spelling and grammer skills. Anyhow I was just trying to make a point of celebrating the lives of our deceased. You don’t seem to care too much about our deceased soilders or any of our deceased if your major concern is my spelling/grammatical errors.

Bernie Mac was a great comedian – actor, but most of all he was a husband of thirty years to one woman give the man some credit he deserve it. I hope he lived a righteous life before the LORD, if not I sincerely hope he repented and asked for forgiveness for any wrong he may have ever done. Really he will be missed, but the only thing that matters now is If the Lord is pleased with his life. My prayers do go out to his family and any other families who have lost a love one.

I am just now getting to this site. From reading some of the things, I’m glad I waited!

I was diagnosed with pulmonary and spinal sarcoidosis a little over a year and a half ago. It is not aids…get real and get informed before start acting/saying stuff you know NOTHING about!

The first round of chemo didn’t do anything good for me. It is an awful illness that many know little about. Which could explain the assinine things that were written.

Quit being a stupid *#&* and google it before you open your pie hole about it. Sarcoidosis=aids? Give me a break!

What is wrong with some of you people. It is no mystery our society needs to focus more on education. I was cruising around looking at sites and came across this because I am watching Ocean’s 11. First of all – Bernie Mac rocks and will be missed dearly by his family. You idiots making racial slurs and jokes need to grow up. A man died and this is how you show your maturity, or lack thereof. I am in full support of our troops, and thank them every chance I get. To mock someone’s suicide and call them weak is one of the most pathetic things I have EVER witnessed. Do the world a favor – don’t ever think or speak again – honestly I would kick the sh*t out of you if I knew you. I was so sickened by the lack of class some of you showed on this site, I had to say something. I don’t normally write on these things, and frankly I don’t care about celebrities either – something had to be said about the pure lack of tact some of you children displayed here. If that is how you act – don’t be surprised when no one shows up or even cries at your funeral – you don’t deserve the attention – this is all you will ever get. So hide behind your computers attempting to be funny when all you are is a scared loser with no social skills or self-confidence.

Thanks for making us laugh Bernie!!
