Anton Yelchin Dead At 27 In Freak Car Accident
As we reported, Yelchin’s driveway is on a steep incline from the house to the street. It appears the “Star Trek” star had just left his home and cleared the security gate … but for some reason it appears he got out and left the vehicle in neutral.
Yelchin’s 5,000 pound Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled backwards and pinned him against the gate with such force, it bent the metal.
Jesus Christ. As for how the hell something like this even happens, Gizmodo has a theory, and it involves a recent recall on Jeep Grand Cherokees after drivers were injured because their cars lied to them about being in park then tried to kill them. It’s probably just a coincidence.
According to a summary of the NHTSA report on the “defect” (PDF):
The affected vehicles, equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a monostable gear selector, may not adequately warn the driver when driver’s door is opened and the vehicle is not in PARK, allowing them to exit the vehicle while the vehicle is still in gear.
Drivers thinking that their vehicle’s transmission is in the PARK position may be struck by the vehicle and injured if they attempt to get out of the vehicle while the engine is running and the parking brake is not engaged.
By April 12, 2016, Fiat Chrysler had identified 212 crashes, 308 claims of property damage, and 41 injuries related to the issue, according to a submission [PDF] to the NHTSA.
Yup, that’ll do it. Which is a goddamn shame because from almost all accounts, Anton Yelchin was one of the few non-douchebag actors in Hollywood who genuinely loved the work and had just started to hit his stride in Green Room, according to people who are way better at critiquing films than I am. In the meantime, are you famous and alive in the year 2016? You won’t be.
Rest In Peace, Anton.
